2012 Access to Learning Award: The Dominican Republic's Community Technology Centers (CTCs)
In the Dominican Republic, women are often denied access to the educational and employment opportunities available to men. For that reason, many resort to prostitution, while many more simply resign themselves to making due on the limited income brought in by their husbands or the small stipend provided by the government.
The goal (of the CTCs) is to ensure that all people—particularly those who are the poorest, most marginalized members of society—are able to benefit from the high-tech tools that are often only available to a privileged few.Records provided by a Kenyan cell phone
