GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a sys-tem which can be used to reliably determine your location anywhere in the world. A“gyroscope” and the electronic speedometer signal are also used to track the vehi-cle’s movements. The TravelPilot EX-V navigation system compares this data withthe data stored in digital form on the navigation DVD-ROM and uses it to calculate theroutes in route guidance. If the TravelPilot EX-V is connected to a TMC source (“TMC D-Namic tuner box” orappropriately equipped car radio), it will be able to take the current traffic situation intoaccount when calculating the route. For more information on TMC, please refer to thesection on “Dynamic Route Guidance with TMC”.

Switching the unit onIf the TravelPilot EX-V has been properly connected to the vehicle ignition and contin-uous plus, the TravelPilot EX-V will switch on automatically when you start your vehi-cle.

44Dynamic route guidance with TMC

The TMC function on the TravelPilot EX-V enables the system to use dynamic routeguidance to avoid traffic congestion. The TravelPilot EX-V analyses incoming TMCtraffic messages, adapts the planned route to the current traffic situation, and displaystraffic reports symbolically on the map display.

Plus Point: The TravelPilot EX-V always calculates the optimum route interms of travelling time; i.e. if a detour around traffic congestion increasestravelling time significantly, the TravelPilot EX-V would remain on the routepassing through the traffic congestion under certain conditions. This de-pends on what kind of traffic congestion has been reported and how long it isand on how long the possible detour is.

Dynamic route guidance is only possible when the TravelPilot EX-V is connected to aTMC receiver.

TMC receivers include the “TMC D-Namic tuner box”, which was specially developedfor the TravelPilot EX-V, and a number of Blaupunkt car radios.

Please contact your authorized Blaupunkt dealer or ring the Blaupunkt telephone hot-line (the hotline number is listed on the last page of this instruction manual) to find outwhich Blaupunkt car radios can be used in conjunction with the TravelPilot EX-V.

Plus Point: If you do not have a “TMC-Tunerbox D-Namic” or a suitable Blau-punkt car radio, you can enter a detour manually to avoid traffic congestion. For further details, read the “Using the traffic congestion function” section inthe “Route guidance” chapter.

Plus Point: The “TMC D-Namic tuner box” will automatically tune into theTMC station you have selected (preferred station). This means that after youleave the reception area served by your preferred station (the system willtune into a different TMC station) and return to this reception area again lat-er, this is the station that will be selected even if other TMC stations areavailable. This intelligent switching function means that the station indicationmay change frequently in the reception area as well. This ensures that youalways receive all of the traffic information which is transmitted by the TMCstations within reception range.

Calculating the route with TMC while route guidance is inprogressThe traffic messages are transmitted by TMC stations along with their regular pro-gramming. If a traffic message affects the route calculated, then a new route to theselected destination will be calculated automatically. You will hear the following voiceoutput: “The route is being calculated taking traffic reports into account”.

NoteThe TravelPilot EX-V always calculates a time-optimized route. This meansthat if the reported traffic problem were to involve too long a detour, theTravelPilot may decide not to calculate a diversion at all and instead leadyou through the traffic. This behaviour depends on the length and type oftraffic problem and the length of the possible detour.

Care tips for DVD-ROMs

If a DVD-ROM becomes dirty, never clean it using a circular motion but always fromits centre to its outer edge using a soft lint-free cloth. If the DVD is very dirty, werecommend you wash the DVD using standard washing-up liquid. Again, when wash-ing the DVD, never clean it using circular movements but always wipe it from its cen-tre to its outer edge and leave it to dry.

We also recommend that you handle both the under and upper sides of the DVD withcare, since the structure of the DVD is such that the information layer is located direct-ly beneath the printed layer (i.e. label side).

75

Some comments regarding questions on reading quality:

A dirty or damaged DVD can lead to difficulties when reading the DVD. The severity ofthe reading error depends on the amount of dirt present and the severity of the phys-ical damage. Severe scratches cause “read errors (data errors)”, which lead to theDVD jumping or getting stuck during playback. All DVDs must be handled with careand always placed in a protective case when stored.

80Glossary

Dynamic navigation

Dynamic navigation is possible if the navigation system is con-nected to a TMC source. The TMC data are sent to the naviga-tion system. The navigation system analyses the information it-self and takes the traffic flow, traffic congestion length and legalspeed limit into account when working out a new time-optimisedroute.

GALA

The automatic volume adjustment feature adjust the volume tosuit the speed at which you are travelling. As your speed in-creases, so too does the level of noise inside the vehicle. Thenavigation system therefore adjusts the volume of the voice out-put automatically. You can set sensitivity of this adjustment fea-ture.

GPS

The Global Positioning System is a system of satellites devel-oped by the United States ministry of defence for determiningyour position anywhere in the world. Under ideal circumstancesthe system’s precision is below 10 m.

Gyro

The gyro (gyroscope) is integrated in the navigation system. It isused for determining changes in direction when taking turningsor driving along bends.

Positioning

To ensure that the navigation system provides the driving rec-ommendations at the right time, the position of the vehicle onthe road network must be determined very precisely. Sensorsdetect the route being travelled along, the direction of travel andchanges in direction. The position of the vehicle is tracked byway of a GPS satellite receiver. The information from these sen-sors is constantly compared to the course that the road takesaccording to the digital map on the DVD-ROM.

TMC

The Traffic Message Channel is a digital traffic information datachannel that is used for broadcasting consistently up-to-date dataon the current traffic situation.

84Installation

Description

The TravelPilot EX-V navigation system is an independent sys-tem with an integrated gyroscope. After a destination has beenentered and activated, the system delivers visual driving recom-mendations as pictograms on a colour monitor and spoken driv-ing information via a separate speaker well in advance of anyturns or changes in driving direction required. In this way, thesystem guides the motorist from his/her starting point on the bestroute to the selected destination. All of the available functions are described in the specificationsof the DVD-ROM used.

Notes on how the system functions

The TravelPilot is equipped with an automatic calibrationfeature which is required to determine the current vehicleposition. Depending on the GPS reception available, thecalibration is completed after the vehicle has been drivenapprox. 15 km. Driving along a winding route (in the city),which is indicated on the monitor on a map, accelerates thecalibration.

The speedometer signal connection in the vehicle allows thesystem to determine the distance driven. If there is no speed-ometer signal, it will be necessary to have a route sensor in-stalled by an authorised customer service centre. In this case, you will have to order a sensor kit (route sen-sor, magnet strips, bracket, plug and installation instruc-tions) from your dealer.Order No.: 7 607 611 093
