The State of the Industry Considering the rapid pace of growth in our industry in recent years there exists a wide consensus among training professionals that the future will comprise much of the same dramatic growth and technological innovation only multiplied. This uncertain environment presents challenges and amazing opportunities for training professional and educational institutions alike (D. West 2011) as we struggle to keep up and deliver timely and relevant solutions while meeting organizational objectives.

To add to this the tool set we have available is increasingly complex and highly technical requiring novel approaches and measured and thoughtful application to balance the demands of education and budgetary constraints. In addition our target audiences present unique challenges of their own and add to the complexity with generational and cultural learning styles and diverse abilities and expectations that will push to the limits available resources and test our creativity to supply appropriate and engaging solutions.

To respond to this demanding climate training organizations and learning professionals will need to adapt to the changing educational landscape by offering a variety of creative and innovative solutions and methodologies while preserving instructional integrity. This will required a delicate balance that continues to energize and drive the innovation in today’s classrooms, virtual, and self-paced solutions that are transforming the very way knowledge and needed skills are learned and acquired.

The implications are far reaching indeed and point to dramatic economic consequences and opportunities that have global reach. In the next section we shall review some of the most influential trends and advancements shaping the current educational landscape, examine potential challenges, and take a look at what the future may hold for our industry.

Trends and Challenges:

The quote above addresses by far the most significant challenge to education and training organizations of our times. With tuition costs sky rocketing a record 429% in the last two decades alone (Sheets 2012) and dismal graduation rates of 50% and 21% for Bachelor and Associates degrees respectively clearly there is urgent need to re-think our approach to education as we are seek affordable and scalable alternatives to the traditional classroom experience. These pressures apply to the greater Training and Development industry as well and many critical lessons can be learned by drawing from higher education.

“Clearly, the great challenge facing higher education today is to contain costs while at the same time improving outcomes—in short, to

increase productivity.”

Sheets, 2012

Trends and Challenges:

1. Increased adoption of Open Content and Resources 2. Explosion of Online programs, tools, and resources 3. Questioning of the traditional Degree path/ How we chose to learn 4. Opportunities of Big Data Analytics and standards adoption 5. Re-thinking Educational Business models 6. Partnerships of Education with Government and Industry

Open Content and Educational Resources have captured much attention of late as many prestigious universities and open content sources such as iTunes U, Openstax CNX, TED, YouTube, Khan Academy, and others have dominated headlines. Interest has been overwhelming; yet outcomes and formal evaluation of effectiveness let alone actual degrees remain elusive and many challenges for standardization remain. It is clear however that the medium of free high quality education will continue to grow and quite possibly benefit traditional education providers by expanding the reach of the brand while preserving unique experiences. The explosion of Online and distance educational offerings has added considerably to the choices available both in college settings and professional development. The need to expand the reach of high quality education and capture wider domestic and international markets is driving this unprecedented growth as providers maximize reach while containing costs. Add to this a plethora of tools and educational resources and opportunities arise for transformative change further testing our resources and imaginations. The challenges of innovative content development, delivery, and access will spurn new organizational models and solutions as providers respond to the demand for innovative and relevant solutions.

Traditional Degree Paths are already experiencing the growing pains of disruptive innovation. Non-linear paths are becoming much more common as students squeezed by increasing costs, competition, and the pressures work and home schedules. Note: that a growing number of students, nearly 1/3 of college students will attend multiple universities, often simultaneously, take time away (J. J. Selingo 2013), and often move from four year schools to two year colleges. This trend is likely to continue as more “Personalized,” “Open” schedule, and “On-Demand” learning solutions emerge. Training organizations will be tasked to provide innovative delivery models and maximize development activities and resources. Big Data Analytics and advances in IT offer answers to the questions raised by the influx of the emerging technologies and delivery options transforming education. It is now becoming increasingly possible to supply not only a national but global standards and conformity assessment systems (Sheets 2012) that if adopted will open the door by codifying the internationalization of education and training standards worldwide. The challenges of personal security, universal adoption, and ethical considerations will test our abilities as educators and training organizations to respond to the promise of IT. Tools for compliance and analysis of performance data and analytics will continue to evolve supporting business needs to increase productivity and efficiencies and align strategic objectives. Re-thinking and applying innovation in educational business models will become increasingly necessary to realize I.T.’s transformative potential for education and training (Sheets 2012). It is only when there is an alignment between industry business models, “value networks,” and regulatory bodies that the potential for dramatic advances in learning credentialing, R&D, and business management can be fully realized. Here technologies and advancements have far outpaced our ability to effectively integrate and incorporate value based solutions. Business strategies will need to be restructured to encourage innovation.

Developing and creating partnerships with government and industry will expand growth opportunities allowing education and training to remain vital and attractive to tomorrow’s student and workforce. With only 48% of employers expected to provide any On-the-job training (S. Walden 2014) tomorrow’s students will need degree programs that will provide the needed hands on experience employers expect. Additionally Performance Support driven solutions will continue to drive corporate and professional development offerings with increased flexibility in scheduling, personalization, and affordability that will continue to shape the educational landscape. Breaking down the barriers to wide acceptance and integration of these emerging technologies and new approaches will test our current ability to apply acceptable standards of assessment and accreditation worldwide. Partnering more closely with industry and policy makers will ensure that all the proper stakeholders will be included in the process and that the value of education remains high.

Conclusions:

Heralding this new day in education we have seen dramatic departures from the traditional learning models to more robust and flexible models incorporating an increased focus on distance and online education and the need to align our educational development strategies with current technologies, economic realities, and policy makers. The challenge to remain current and relevant will test our resources and require new training cultures of innovation, business models, and partnerships to ensure a responsive and versatile environment for generations to come.
