ApproachAs stated in The Need For Competence in Things Other than SRV in Order to Teach & Implement SRV, there are many ways to engage SRV theory.

I will conceptualize SRV in terms of image and competency.

The Need for Competence in Things Other than SRV in Order to Teach & Implement SRVSusan Thomas with the southern Ontario SRV study group. SRV Journal Volume 8 Number 2.

Enhancement of Imagery of an Entire ClassWeb Sphere: a website that serves as a gateway to other websites of a central themeproduct of the notion that websites should self-organize, rather than be assembled by disinterested actors (google, etc)Examples: Caribbean Amerindian Centrelink (now the Indigenous Caribbean Network)

Web Sphere Analysis: A new methodology in sociology.can track structural, content and visitor changes in websites over timeusing manually and automatically generated data

A short video on how google works:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNHR6IQJGZs

For more on the Caribbean Amerindian Centrelink see Forte, Maximilian C. "Centring the links: Understanding cybernetic patterns of co-production, circulation and consumption." Virtual methods. Oxford: Berg (2005).

You can find the Indigenous Caribbean Network at: http://indigenouscaribbean.ning.com/

For more on Web Sphere Analysis as a methodology see Schneider, Steven M, and Kirsten A Foot. "Web sphere analysis: An approach to studying online action." Virtual methods: Issues in social research on the Internet (2005): 157-170.

Note that the Web Sphere of Forte and the Web Sphere of Schneider and Foot are not exactly the same type of Web Sphere in that one is presented to the public online and the other is gathered only for the purpose of analysis. However both are a collection of sites devoted to a central theme.

Enhancement of Imagery of an Entire Class (cont.)Can control the imagery surrounding devalued groups that is consumed by those closest (most relevant) to them (family, support workers, caregivers etc)

Can better track trends and prominence of particular deviancy roles or images

Enhancement of Imagery of an IndividualEmbodiment: How one constructs their body onlineAll major media through which values, images, roles and expectancies are communicated are available online

physical settings and environments personal presentationsocial contextslanguage, idiom and symbolsactivities and uses of timemiscellaneous

Online spaces where some or all of the major media is communicated:FacebookTwitterMySpaceEmailInstagramYoutubePlenty of Fish

The major media comes from material from a recent 4-day SRV training at York University in Ontario.

Embodiment:For a more detailed (and highly psychological) discussion seeYoung, Garry, and Monica T Whitty. Transcending taboos: A moral and psychological examination of cyberspace. Routledge, 2012.

To give a quick quote from this book:“subjects typically enquired about age, sex and location (‘asl’); each of these ‘markers’ standing in defiance of the disembodiement promised. It seems that, in cyberspace, the physical body and its social meaning has not been transcended, or ‘technologically neutralized’ (Balsamo, 1993, p. 128). On the contrary, evidence appears to support the view expressed by O’Brien (1999, p. 85) (and endorsed by Boler in her paper) that ‘reference to the body as connected to self will still be evoked as the basis of meaningful communication.” (p. 117)

Enhancement of Imagery of an Individual (cont.)Facebook: Images can be shared throughout the network with or without the knowledge or consent of the tagged user

Concealment, compensation and enhancement still apply and can be controlled, however may be difficult to implement if other Facebook users become involved

factors that magnify the effectiveness of image messages:1) enlarges or reinforces a pre-existing

mind-set, stereotype expectancy2) it is conveyed by multiple

communication channels3) it impacts the unconscious4) it is sent out relentlessly

The factors that magnify the effectiveness of image messages comes from material presented at a recent 4-day SRV training at York University in Ontario.

Concealment, compensation and enhancement come from Wolfensberger’s The APPEAR Tool:Wolfensberger, W. (2009). Observing, recording and addressing personal physical appearance by means of the APPEAR tool. Syracuse, NY, USA: Syracuse University Training Institute for Human Service Planning, Leadership & Change Agentry; & Plantagenet, ON, Canada: L’Institut Valor Institute.

For a study of how people normally manage their undesirable Facebook photos see:Lang, Caroline, and Hannah Barton. "Just untag it: Exploring the management of undesirable Facebook photos." Computers in Human Behavior 43 (2015): 147-155.

Some Facts About Relationships That Partially or Fully Occur Online

● Can range from positive, emotionally engaged relationships to superficial and even harmful

● This depends on the intent of the user● Many relationships develop into face to face encounters,

sometimes even making the Internet obsolete in the relationship

● Ideals in traditional relationships are present also in online relationships, but manifest themselves with different social cues

See:Whitty, Monica, and Jeff Gavin. "Age/sex/location: Uncovering the social cues in the development of online relationships." CyberPsychology & Behavior 4.5 (2001): 623-630.

Implementation Proposal#Engage: A group of Brockville youth with disabled loved ones

Have already met once for a retreat that exposed the group to certain SRV topics

Are working on a separate but connected project Re:ActionForInclusion

them present better online imaging for their loved ones.2) Help them to implement this knowledge3) Develop skills that will lead to further implementation

beyond the individual level
