Alert! The International Maritime Human Element BulletinThe first 12 issues of Alert! bulletin can now be purchased as a single bound edition and a second volume to Issue 21 will be available in October, 2009. The Alert! project – launchedin October 2003 – is a campaign to improve the awareness of the human element in the maritime industry. This is aNautical Institute project, sponsored by Lloyd's RegisterEducational Trust.

Alert! aims to improve the application of human elementprinciples in the design, construction and operation of ships.

The articles are written for maritime professionals by a cross-section from the maritime and other industries. They serve asa reminder that human element considerations do not start atthe design stage of a ship and finish at build, but that theymust be applied throughout its lifecycle, especially whenupdating its role, its manning philosophies or when retro-fittingnew systems or equipment.

Through Issues 1 to 12 of the Alert! bulletin we examine:

 Human factor and ergonomic issues that can influence the interaction between crews and any ship systems;

 Physiological and psychological factors that can affect the ability of the mariners to do their jobs; and regulatory,business and ethical influences on the human element in the shipping industry;

 The importance of education and training for seafarers and those involved in management and regulation;

 The importance of user input, human centred design and human factors in the design and build of a ship;

 Day-to-day problems, both ashore and afloat, that mightaffect the ability of the masters and crews to ensure the safe conduct of ships;

 The effects of regulation on modern day ship operations;

 Issues to be considered when integrating the humanelement on board ship.
