K nown as China’s f irst airpor t project to use LED l ights for the
entire i l lumination, the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airpor t began its expansion project for Terminal T2 in 2009. The expansion was completed in Apri l 2012, and the Terminal commenced operations on July 28th of the same year.
Appointed as the l ighting solutions provider, J iuzhou Greeble ful ly par ticipated in the l ighting design procedures, offer ing its LED luminaires, as well as R&D, manufacturing, instal lation and debugging ser vices.
At the beginning of the expansion project, it was made clear that the Terminal ’s inter ior l ighting design would incorporate the use of LED l ighting to reduce electr icity usage and costs.
The l ighting design aimed to improve the l ighting per formance. Ult imately, the eff iciency of one down l ight reached 85.26lm/W - according to a third-par ty test report - exceeding the requirement of the airpor t management (which was 65lm/W ) by more than 30 percent.

Designed as a stand-alone hotel, with its own entrance, reception and aesthetic, The Darl ing Hotel brings the total rooms and suites
at The Star to over 650 across three towers, and is home to Sokyo, the contemporary Japanese restaurant and bar.
Fol lowing the Austral ian tradit ion of ‘Design and Construct’ Cox Richardson Architects were commissioned to design the hotel, and the designs were then interpreted and built by Brookfield Mult iplex Building Co. with interiors by DBI Interiors and Laurence Lee. PointOfView was selected to design the l ighting for the prestigious hotel.
The role of the l ighting design is to interpret the interior design and enhance the aesthetics using l ight. “In a casino hotel, you can often go further with l ighting elements than with a city hotel,” said Mark El l iott, Design Director of POV, of his dramatic l ighting scheme. “The biggest chal lenge was the double height atr ium that occupies half of the lobby space.”
In such a high space, creating intimacy is hard, but POV used l ight sources at low levels: Floor lamps, integrated joinery l ighting and in-ground luminaires. The feature wall behind the reception desk shows a red tone, drawing the eye through to the low cei l ing zone.
Chandeliers were hung to add luxe to the space and help to f i l l the tr iple height void, without competing with the architecture of the atr ium roof. “We up-l it the f lanking sandstone walls, bringing the l ighting to a human level, and drawing the eye down from the sky beyond,” said El l iot.

Ell iott l i t the Spa space for comfort rather than function. Spas are a lucrative addit ion to hotels, and l ighting is crit ical in making cl ients comfortable in a space where they might otherwise feel vulnerable or exposed.

“I love l ighting spas,” said El l iott, “You can push darkness to its l imits, and ful ly explore the drama of shadows.” Integrated l ight plays a huge role, for instance where l ight spi l ls from the slots in joinery and provides an indirect i l lumination that promotes relaxation.
POV worked closely with interior designers, DBI. “We have a close working relationship with DBI and have del ivered f ive-star hospital ity projects together in Abu Dhabi too,” said El l iott. POV also worked with Cox Richardson Architects on The Sydney Convention Centre.
The cl ient, Echo Entertainment, wanted to create a destination hotel to compliment the new casino development, with a space so beautiful ly designed that it draws cl ientele across the harbour to the complex.

Since opening in late 2011, The Darl ing Hotel has been hugely successful in attracting Asian tourists to the Star Casino complex. Expectations of accommodation, service and a largely tradit ional view of luxury have been amply rewarded. In Apri l 2012, the Darl ing Hotel won the ‘Best New Hotel Construction and Design 2012’ award at the Asia-Pacif ic International Hotel Awards in Kuala Lumpur, where 18 countries took part.

I nternationally renowned large format projection and video ar tist Ross Ashton returned to Gateshead’s Saltwell Park for the Enchanted Parks
2012 event, which was organised by the Newcastle & Gateshead Init iative (NGI) and Magnetic Events.
The beautiful ly imaginative large format show, “Glass House” celebrated the work of Victor ian stained glass ar t ist , Wil l iam Wailes. The six-and-a-half-minute piece was projected onto the front face of Saltwell Towers, Wailes’ magnif icent former home in the grounds of the Park , and ran ever y evening for the duration of the after-dark experience. I t was accompanied by a soundscape created by Karen Monid, and the whole work was designed from the star t as an integral visual and audio narrative.
A single PIGI 6Kw projector with a double rotating scroller was used to project the images, which were f itted with a 25cm lens and located 35 metres away producing a 20-metre wide picture.
Challenging environmental conditions included temperatures down to -5ºC and 15cm of snow on the ground, mak ing it a tough work ing environment, but also added to the magic and ephemeral nature of the instal lation once up and running – which looked stunning.
“Glass House” juxtaposed the chemical reactions involved in the process of mak ing stained glass against those of the Great Fire of Gateshead, which r ipped through the hear t of the city in 1854. The f ire, though destructive, was fol lowed by the rebuilding and regeneration of the city.

Ashton and Monid’s collaborative works are renowned for fusing specif ic themes and local histor y relevant to individual buildings with fabulously accessible and enter taining results.
Ashton commissioned locally-based photographer Shaun Thubron to visit al l the churches in the area, which sti l l have intact Wailes stained glass windows, including St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle and others, which he used as or iginal mater ials for his PIGI ar twork .
The audio scr ipt was derived from a number of mid 19th Centur y resources, including accounts of the Great Fire and printed documents from the 1851 Great Exhibit ion at Cr ystal Palace, which enthusiastical ly embraced Wailes’ work .
Extracts were chosen by Monid and read by a local community group, the Fr iends of Saltwell Park . These were additionally composed as multi- layered sound textures. Karen also used multiple glass sounds and tones - both musical ly and as effects – including a rendition of local folk song, ‘ The Waters of Tyne’. The sound system comprised two KV2 EX12 speakers with playback via an Alesis HD24 hard dr ive, and al l the or iginal work was created and played back in stereo.
Ashton commented, “ I was ver y proud to be involved in Enchanted Parks again, and ver y pleased with the results. The idea of br inging local histor y al ive and reaching out to people in l ive instal lation l ike this is ver y excit ing and rewarding”.

Developed by LBS Bina Group Bhd (LBS), D’ Is land Residence is s ituated on an expansive 175-acre site and comprises 237 super-l ink houses, 298 semi-detached homes, 148 bungalows, 352 high-end condominium units and commercial hub. The development wil l also feature a clubhouse and environmentally-fr iendly components l ike energy-eff icient street l ights and a rainwater har vesting system.
High Quality Compound and Signage Illumination GE Lighting has instal led 140 units of LED R150 and 49 units of R250 for the compound l ighting at D’ Is land Residence. These two luminaires are ideal for street and compound i l lumination as they direct the l ight to where it is needed while reducing the glare from the f itt ing to less than f ive percent. There is no wasted upward l ight leakage. In addition, the white LED l ight makes for a more modern and vibrant atmosphere in the night space.
Instal led at the entrance, the Tetra miniMAX signage system is a popular choice as it provides for miniature channel letter l ighting for logo letters. I t is also ideal for cove l ighting, accent or border l ighting. The OptiLens maximises the area of l ight coverage to produce outstanding uniformity. I t also comes with easy mounting and an over-moulded design, which

protects the components from moisture. Users have a choice of a ful l range of colours including white, warm white, red, blue and green.
Positive Environmental Impact and ReturnsOn an operating level, the estimated savings in terms of energy usage and maintenance costs amount to US$181,692 per annum. This translates to a payback period of about f ive years. From an environmental perspective, the energy savings is equivalent to el iminating approximately 507,000 lbs of carbon dioxide car emissions per year, or creating 62.8 acres of new trees.

T he global power systems company, Rolls-Royce, off icial ly opened its largest faci l ity in Asia at the Seletar Aerospace Park in Singapore
on 13 Februar y 2012. Constructed on a 154,000-square-metre site, the faci l ity is the f irst to br ing advanced, high-value aerospace manufacturing technology to Singapore. The Rolls-Royce Seletar Campus includes an Assembly and Test Unit , a Wide Chord Fan Blade manufacturing faci l ity, an Advanced Technology Centre and a Regional Training Centre.
As par t of this prestigious project, Vossloh-Schwabe and Eff ion Technologies par tnered to achieve dynamic l ighting solutions. Eff ion Technologies Pte Ltd is a leading supplier of l ighting products such as lamps, equipment, f itt ings, explosion-proof l ighting accessories, l ighting control gear such as ballasts and transformers, as well as equipment and f itt ings for offshore, marine, oi l and gas l ighting.
Since the project incorporated both a design and construction remit, Eff ion Technologies was responsible for ensuring the l ighting design met al l requirements with regard to functionality, the requisite “Greenmark ” accreditation and the al located budget.
The systems supplied for the Rolls-Royce project included l ighting for internal off ice areas, clean rooms, the assembly area and the Test Cell faci l ity, as well as l ighting for the external l ink to the car park . Two main contractors worked on a total of four buildings, al l of which were awarded a Platinum Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Greenmark accreditation.

Vossloh-Schwabe’s Electronic Ballasts Combined with Energy-Saving Lamps for Illuminating Office SpacesVossloh-Schwabe’s T5 electronic ballasts were teamed with GE T5 “ Watt Miser ” energy-saving lamps to achieve desirable off ice l ighting results. For parameter l ighting purposes, the selected GE HID lamps were combined with VS’ magnetic ballasts (NAHJ150) due to their abil ity to optimise l ight output, colour temperature and the ser vice l i fe of discharge lamps. Around two hundred and f i f ty pieces of high-eff iciency VS LED lamps (PAR30 LED with an E27 base) were used to improve the overal l eff iciency of the l ighting system throughout al l back off ice areas.
Over thousand pieces of Electronic ballasts for compact f luorescent lamps (warm star t ELXc & dimmable ELXd) were also used around off ice, lobby and corr idor areas.
As these ballasts enable br ightness and lamp-wattage control of f luorescent lamps, they make a fur ther contr ibution to saving energy. To provide constant and consistent l ight output, hundred pieces of VS/Universal constant wattage ballasts (type M1000) were used for al l high-bay f ixtures in the entire Rolls-Royce faci l ity.
