T hese traveling educational trunks help make natural history come alive for your classroom. Each trunk is filled with interdisciplinary

and scientifically-accurate educational materials such as grizzly hides, wolf skulls, age-appropriate lesson plans, posters, videos, curriculum guide, games and puppets.

Trunks are sent statewide to Montana teachers, reaching over 4,000 students annually.

To reserve a trunk, please call 406.327.0405 during our business hours: Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm. (Please do not email your request–call us directly!)

Renting a Trunk

Trunks can be rented for 2 weeks for $35 or 3 weeks for $45. Contact us to discuss longer rentals. Payment must be made in full to confirm reservation. Users are responsible for contents of the trunk and shipping charges. Trunks cannot be shipped out of state. For in-state shipping, a $150 damage deposit is required to confirm your reservation. After the trunk is returned, we will refund the balance minus rental & shipping costs. One way shipping in state may cost up to $100 depending on size of trunk. Trunks are subject to a $35 late fee if not returned on time.

These trunks can also be picked up at the Montana Natural History Center at 120 Hickory Street, Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Saturday 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. A limited number of scholarships are available if you cannot find funding to cover rental and/or shipping costs.

Funding

The Nature Discovery Traveling Trunk program is funded by program fees and supplemented by grants and donations to keep costs low for participating schools. Scholarships may be available for rural schools to offset shipping costs.

We are delighted that Missoula’s Southgate Mall has generously underwritten our traveling trunk program so that we may keep our rental rates low and still offer a quality program for teachers, students, and local youth groups who enjoy the trunks.

With this resource and curriculum, students become wildlife biologists, completing a creative research project about the mammals of Western Montana. They will link directly with Condon Wildlife Cams to learn about and see real wildlife being monitored in the mountains of Montana. Along the way, teachers lead students in learning about animal habitat, body structure, food, range, distinguishing characteristics, and tracks, as well as the skills of a field biologist and phenology as it relates to Montana wildlife. Projects from the trunk can be used long after the trunk is returned through access to the Montana wildlife monitoring website.

Scholarships provided by Blackfoot Communications for schools in the following areas: Alberton, Avon, Arlee, Charlo, Clinton, Condon, Dixon, Drummond, Noxon, Ovando, Philipsburg, Plains, Potomac, St. Ignatius, St. Regis, Seeley Lake, Superior, and Thompson Falls.

The Raptors of the Rockies Traveling Trunk is an excellent resource for teaching students about Montana’s birds of prey. The trunk contains 10 raptor mounts encased in Plexiglass, plus bird parts such as feathers, wings, feet and an owl skull. Also included is a box of laminated Species Accounts and Range Maps of the 31 raptors of Montana, plus a glossary and sheets on silhouettes, taxonomy and topography. Copies of the book Raptors of the Rockies plus 5 other selected books on the topic serve as references. Because they contain protected birds, they must remain within the state of Montana. The basic outline of 15 activities for classes using the trunks has been written by Kate Davis and Leslie Nyce. Although it is not the same as a live bird show, it should be equally informative and interesting for your students!

Our mission is to promote and cultivate the appreciation, understanding and stewardship of nature through education. To this end, we offer more than 25 different programs and resources, provide direct experiences in nature for more than 3000 children and adults annually, and reach out to more than 10,000 additional people in the region through our Montana Naturalist magazine and Field Notes radio program on Montana Public Radio.
