Joppa Flats Summer Camp NATURE ADVENTURES FOR AGES 6-11

SUMMER 2018

One Plum Island Turnpike | Newburyport, MA

DISCOVER. EXPLORE. BE OUTSIDE!

Summer 2018 Announcements • July 4th week will feature two new mini-camps instead of a full-week

session.

• After-Camp programming has a new end time of 4:30 pm.

• We continue our commitment to offer financial aid to camp families by increasing our Summer Outdoors Fund. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for information; we never want cost to be a barrier to a child’s participation in camp.

About CampOur camp encourages children’s curiosity about nature through outdoor exploration, play, and hands-on science. Camp days are filled with insect catching, wildlife tracking, and experiments about everything from flight, to weather, to metamorphosis and snail slime!

Nature-based art projects, games, and cooperative challenges encourage imagination, self-expression, and campers’ connection to each other. Our campers go on multiple local field trips each week to explore amazing habitats first-hand. Small group sizes nurture friendships and ensure that campers stay safe and engaged.

From the Camp Director’s DeskSummer is always fun and full of nature discovery at Joppa Flats.

With the guidance of their counselors, our campers uncover the wildlife and beauty of local habitats, such as Maudslay State Park, the Ipswich River and Atlantic Ocean, and beyond. This summer we continue our tradition of nature connection through play and outdoor exploration, thanks to dedicated staff and creative, hands-on programming within our inclusive and caring camp community. We look forward to getting your kids outdoors and into nature this summer!

Warmest regards,

Kirsten "Autumn" Lindquist

Our Camp Staff Staff are carefully selected for their maturity, ability to work with children outdoors, passion for nature, and enthusiasm. All undergo background checks, are certified in CPR/First Aid/AED, and receive training in child development, risk management, and natural history prior to the start of camp. Many are pursuing careers in education, ecology and conservation, and are always eager to share their knowledge. For them, camp at Joppa Flats is far more than "just a summer job."

Camp counselors are at least 20 years of age, and After-Camp counselors are at least 16 years of age.

Our Camp DirectorKirsten Lindquist is Joppa Flats’ Camp Director and Youth Program Coordinator. This will be her fourth summer at camp, and she can’t wait to welcome campers for another season of fun and discovery!

Kirsten is certified in CPR/First Aid/AED, Wilderness First Aid, and Small Watercraft Safety. She has 10 years of environmental education experience from positions with Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, AmeriCorps, and Great Basin Outdoor School. "Autumn," her camp nickname, comes from her love for New England’s most colorful season.

SEASHORE SCIENTISTSJune 25–29$365 members; $440 nonmembersField Trips: Tide Pools, Salt Marsh, Half-Moon Beach, Maritime Gloucester

Explore the diverse and interconnected habitats of the seashore, from river and salt marsh to the ocean! Discover creatures big and small that make their home in the marsh, and get muddy digging for snails and clams. Uncover hidden hermit crabs in tidepools, and check out marine plankton up-close under a microscope.

We’ll round out the week’s adventures with a trip to Gloucester Maritime Museum, with its aquarium and marine lab, and nearby Half-Moon Beach!

EXPLORERS (ages 6–8) & TREKKERS (ages 9–11)Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–3:00 pmAfter Camp (optional): 3:00–4:30 pm

Trekkers and Explorers have fun with science experiments, nature inquiry, and multiple local field trips each session. Both groups gather together for free time, such as lunch and morning snack.

For most science and field trip activities, Trekkers and Explorers engage in separate projects and adventures suited to their strengths and developmental stage. For example, in the "Habitat Heroes" session, Explorers enjoy a live wildlife presentation while Trekkers go on more advanced trip (mountain hike) requiring stamina.

Our counselor-to-camper ratios are low—typically 1:6—and ensure that each child is heard and attended to. Most field trips take place within a half-hour drive of Joppa Flats, and transportation is provided via seven-passenger vans. All driving staff are at least 20 years of age and have completed a driver’s background check.

Summer 2018 Camp Sessions

MINI CAMP • AMPHIBIAN & REPTILE RUCKUS July 2–3 $145 members; $210 nonmembersField Trip: Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, plus a live wildlife presentation

Put your "herpetology hat" on—this session is all about reptiles, amphibians, and their amazing adaptations and habitats! We’ll learn about rare vernal pools that are home to many of our frogs and salamanders during a live-wildlife visit at Joppa Flats. On Tuesday, we’ll venture to Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield to explore ponds and pools in search of snakes, turtles, and frogs!

MINI CAMP • OCEAN DISCOVERY July 5-6$145 members; $210 nonmembersField Trip: Odiorne Point State Park

Meet sea stars, hermit crabs, and other creatures in Joppa Flats’ intertidal touch tank, learn about marine mammals that frequent the North Shore, and study the fish in our salt marsh. On Friday, we’ll visit Odiorne Point State Park in New Hampshire to investigate tide pools, search for seabirds, and walk the trails.

WILD SURVIVORS July 9–13 $350 members; $415 nonmembersField Trips: Moseley Woods, Mill Pond, plus a live wildlife presentation

Wild animals are masters of survival. Discover amazing adaptations that local wildlife use to stay alive, and learn some human survival skills of your own as you hike through habitats from forest to field. We’ll learn how to read a map and compass, and cook a tasty camp snack (without electricity!). Trekkers venture to Moseley Woods for an orienteering challenge, while Explorers go on a nature treasure hunt. We’ll all enjoy a special live-wildlife visit to get a closer look at some of nature’s ultimate survivors—turtles and snakes!

Unbelievable camp—great experiences! I love what you

do for the kids.

BUGS BONANZAJuly 16–20$360 members; $425 nonmembersField Trips: Amesbury Town Forest, Mill Pond, Franklin Park Zoo

Antennae, exoskeletons, and wings, oh my! Grab a net and a bug box—we’re headed to fields, forests, and ponds in search of insects and invertebrates of all kinds. Roll over logs at Amesbury Town Forest to find out what’s living under the leaf litter and uncover larvae living below the water’s surface in West Newbury’s Mill Pond. Investigate the gardens at Joppa Flats and nearby fields for moths, butterflies and beetles.

We’ll end the week with a trip to Franklin Park Zoo’s Butterfly Landing exhibit.

SPLASH! AQUATIC ADVENTURESJuly 23–27$365 members; $435 nonmembersField Trips: Mill Pond, Ipswich & Merrimack Rivers, Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary

What lives in the Merrimack River, and in vernal pools and ponds of the North Shore? How do beavers build habitats, and where are the best hiding places to find frogs and turtles?

We’ll get our feet wet exploring all kinds of local aquatic habitats at places like Mill Pond in West Newbury and Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in Topsfield. Trekkers will go for a canoe paddle on the Ipswich River, and Explorers will track down wildlife of the Merrimack River aboard an exciting Yankee Clipper eco-cruise.

communicating schedule; and

terrific local field trips!"

TAKE FLIGHT July 30–August 3$360 members; $425 nonmembersField Trips: Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, plus a live wildlife presentation

How do wings work? How do you tell a chickadee from a nuthatch? Are bats really blind? This week, we’ll be on the lookout for all things with wings.

We’ll grab our binoculars to seek out some local avian favorites and take nets out to the meadows for flying insects such as dragonflies! Special features include trips to Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary and a visit from a raptor rehabilitator with live birds of prey, as well as bats!

HABITAT HEROESAugust 6–10 $355 members; $415 nonmembersField Trips: Mill Pond and Mount Agamenticus (Trekkers), plus a live wildlife presentation (Explorers)

Visit the many habitats our local wildlife call home, and meet the people who protect them. Explore life under logs and in trees in local forests, and search for minnows and aquatic insects below the water at Mill Pond.

We’ll meet scientists who protect and study wildlife, including a marine rehabilitator who saves stranded seals at Plum Island and Salisbury Beach! Trekkers will end the week with a hike up Mount Agamenticus in Maine—a great beginner’s mountain—to discover alpine habitats, while Explorers enjoy a special live-wildlife visit with York Center for Wildlife’s animal caretakers.

Thank you!

Financial assistance is available based on demonstrated economic need and available funds. Applications are due by March 1 for priority consideration, though applications will continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis as long as funds remain. Please call the Camp Director to request an application or download one at massaudubon.org/campforms.

Important Deadlines All camp forms, waivers, and the balance of your camp tuition are due by May 15. If registering after May 15, payment in full is required and a specific camp form deadline will be set for you. A camper cannot attend camp and his/her spot is not guaranteed until all forms, waivers, and payments are completed (or a payment plan has been established).

Camper Requirements Due to the outdoor and exploratory nature of our camp program, campers must be able to move about on uneven terrain. Campers are expected to meaningfully participate in age-appropriate activities, including nature study. All campers must follow stated behavior expectations and safety rules. The camp director reserves the right to dismiss a camper when, in his/her judgement, the camper’s behavior interferes with the rights of others or the smooth functioning of the group or activity, or violates the camp’s behavior policy. In such cases no refunds will be provided. If you have any questions

Camp Registration Information

Mass Audubon protects 37,000 acres of land throughout Massachusetts, saving birds and other wildlife, and making nature accessible to all. As Massachusetts’ largest nature conservation nonprofit, we welcome more than a half million visitors a year to our wildlife sanctuaries and 20 nature centers. From inspiring hilltop views to breathtaking coastal landscapes, serene woods, and working farms, we believe in protecting our state’s natural treasures for wildlife and for all people–a vision shared in 1896 by our founders, two extraordinary Boston women. Today, Mass Audubon is a nationally recognized environmental education leader, offering thousands of camp, school, and adult programs that get over 225,000 kids and adults outdoors every year. With more than 125,000 members and supporters, we advocate on Beacon Hill and beyond, and conduct conservation research to preserve the natural heritage of our beautiful state for today’s and future generations. We welcome you to explore a nearby sanctuary, find inspiration, and get involved. Learn how at massaudubon.org.
