Natural Textile Fiber:-

Natural textile fibers include those

fibers produced by plants, animals, and geological processes.

Classification Of Natural Fiber:-

They can be classified according to their origin.

1. Vegetable origin …...(Cotton and Jute Fiber)

2. Animal origin …… (Silk and Wool Fiber)

3. Mineral origin……. (Asbestos Fiber) Md. Yousuf Hossain, Green University Of Bangladesh, [email protected]

Properties of Textile Fiber:- To be a textile fiber it should have some properties.

Normally properties of textile fiber are three types

A) Physical Properties.

B) Mechanical Properties.

C) Chemical Properties.

Cotton:-

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants of the genus Gossypium.

The fiber is almost pure cellulose. Under natural condition, the cotton balls will tend to increase the dispersion of the seeds.

Chemical Composition of Cotton Fiber:-

Cellulose…………………………………..... 91.00%

Water………………………………………... 7.85%

Protoplasm , Pectins………………………… 0.55%

Fat and Wax ………………………………… 0.40%

Mineral Salts………………………………... 0.20%

JuteFiber:- Jute fiber is a natural bast fiber. It

is one of the most affordable

natural fibers and is second only to

cotton in amount produced and

variety of uses of vegetable fibers.

It is harder than other textile fibers.

It is environment friendly.

Chemical Composition of Jute Fiber

Cellulose........................................ 65.2%

Hemi-celluloses ............................ 22.2%

Lignin ............................................ 10.8%

Water soluble matter....................... 1.5%

Fat and wax ................................... 0.3 - 1.0%

Silk:-

Silk is a natural protein fiber

which is obtained from the

cocoons of the silkworm. It

is a natural filament

produced by the salivary

glands of silkworms, which

are a type of moth that feeds

on the mulberry bush.

Fat & wax 1.5%

Mineral salt 0.5 %

Wool fiber:-

Wool fiber is the natural hair

grown on sheep and is

composed of protein

substance called as keratin.

Wool is composed of carbon,

hydrogen, nitrogen and this is

the only animal fiber, which

contains sulfur in addition.
