Poultry Abattoir Wastewater Treatment

Where land is available wastewater treatment lagoons offer a very cost effective way to treat abattoir wastewater prior to effluent disposal by irrigation or to municipal sewer.

The efficiency of a conventional wastewater

treatment lagoon system treating high strength

wastewater is insufficient to achieve standards

for irrigation, or results in high charges from

municipalities if treated effluent is discharged to

sewer. Odour from the ponds is often highly offensive.

The use of Citadel BioCat+™ enables high COD

removal efficiencies and virtually eliminates odour

emissions. The graph below shows the performance

of a wastewater treatment lagoon system.

TREATING ABATTOIR EFFLUENT OVER A PERIOD OF SIX YEARS.

The effluent from the poultry abattoir was screened to

remove feathers and large solids and then pumped

to the treatment ponds system. Citadel BioCat and

later Citadel BioCat+™ was continuously added to

the effluent prior to pumping to the ponds. Treatment

efficiency took 6 months to attain steady state with

COD concentrations below 100 mg per liter. Over the

next four years effluent volumes and concentrations

increased as slaughter rates increased and additional

carcass processing was introduced.

Effluent concentrations were further increased when

blood was introduced into the waste stream after the

closure of a local rendering plant.

Benefits+ Capital expenditure saved on conventional treatment process

+ No discharge penaltiesfrom municipality

+ No skilled labour requirements.

+ No odour problems

+ Low running cost

Description of application - The wastewater lagoon system was designed for an effluent flow of 160 kl per day and consisted of two “anaerobic” ponds in series with a retention time of 4 days followed by three “facultative” ponds in series with a retention time of 25 days. After six years the effluent flow had doubled and wastewater concentration increased by over 50% tripling the load on the system.

CITADEL BIOCAT+

BioremediationCitadel Biocat+ brings simplicity to the bioremediation of complex hydrocarbons.

Whatever the bioremediation challenge, Citadel

BioCat+ has the natural solution for it. To date, in

situ solutions have been achieved for reduction

of PAH’s in coke oven effluent lagoons, and COD

compliance for waste water treatment and food

processing lagoons.

BiogasIncreased biogas production of 20 - 35% has been made in Anaerobic Digestion plants.

Other benefits to biogas generation have been

stability and reduced cycle time. Agricultural

applications also include feed water

augmentation for increased livestock health and

yields. Horticulture and fish farming can achieve

commercial benefits from the role of Citadel

Biocat+ in microbial bionutrition.

Other potential applications+ Mechanical soil washing techniques.

+ Treatment and restoration of lakes and waterways.

+ In situ treatment of ground water pollution.

+ Reduction of organic sludge in waste water treatment to cut operational costs and extend plant capacity.

+ Healthy, cost-effective emergency sanitation.

+ Biological treatment of contaminated lagoon sludge, bitumen, and acid tars.

+ De-contamination of soils and waste water.

NATURESORB

SpillsIdeal for hydrocarbons and chemical spills on land and water, NatureSorb is a 100% natural, heat-activated sphagnum moss harvested in Canada.

+ Absorbs oils, fuels, chemicals and solvents on contact.

+ Field tested and the preferred solution of industry professionals.

+ Absorbs 10 times its own weight.

+ Non-abrasive, non-toxic, non-leaching.

NatureSorb can also be used for soil remediation,

water filtration and ionisation of heavy metals.
