TicksareactivefromMarch to October.TheytransmitdangerousdiseasessuchasTBE,Lymediseaseandbabesiosis,alsocalleddog malaria. There are more than 850different species of ticks, the common

tick (Ixodes ricinus) beingthemostcommonofitsspeciesinEurope.When it gets warmer in spring,the ticks awake from their winterhibernation and become active.Theyprefer to live inhighgrass, in

woodland, along the wayside, in parks and even inyourowngarden.Theyclampontobladesofgrassorsimilarandthenthebloodsuckerswaitfortheirvictims,whotheynoticebytheirvi-brations,odoursorheat.Assoonastheyareattachedtotheanimaltheywalkaroundandlookforanapprop-riatespottobite.Withthebite,saliva

Mitesaretinyparasitesthatarebarelyvis-ible to the human eye. They are ayear-roundproblem,buttheyoccurmostfre-quently from spring to autumn. Theyliketonestintheskin,earsandcoatofdogsandcats.Mites liveeitheronthesurfaceoftheskinwheretheyeatflakesofskinortheyboredeepholesintheskinandsuck tissue fluid from there. They also lay their eggs intheseholes,whichcanleadtosevereskininflammation.Therearemanydifferentspeciesofmitesbutjustafewofthemareofsignificancetoourfour-leggedfriends.Certainspecieslivepermanentlyonouranimalsandonlyleadtoillness in immuno-compromised animals. The otherwiseharmlessmitesmultiplyexcessivelyhere,causingchangestoskinandcoats.Certain mites, such as ear mites, are transferred fromanimaltoanimalandotherscomefromthesurroundings.Harvestmites, forexample,attachontoourpetsonly toeat(suckingtissuefluid)andthenreturntothegrass.Thequalityof lifeofaffectedanimals isseverely impairedduetotheitchingandthepetsoftensufferskinandcoatchangesaswellasabnormalbehaviour.
