The air conditioning and heat-ing (HVAC) system in residen-tial A/C units consumes about

45% of all electrical uses within our homes. So, in general, if your power bill is $300 per month in the sum-mer, you’re A/C is responsible for about $135 of the bill. Not only is the HVAC system the largest consumer of energy in the home, but it wastes more than any other device – includ-ing lights and all other appliances. In 2007, over 113 million homes con-sumed nearly 1.4 trillion kWh of elec-trical energy and due to ineffi cien-cies , the total waste equaled about 212-billion kWh -- or enough energy to power 17-million new homes. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that the problem is unseen. In other words, we are simply unaware of the waste within our HVAC systems. We continue to pour millions of dollars out an open window needlessly. Tech-nology has now provided an answer.

SAVE UP TO 35% ON A/C BILLS EACH MONTH...OH, AND YOUR HEALTH TOO!

This problem can be greatly mitigated by having a clean A/C coil (the part of the system where heat is removed from the air). The conventional method of coil cleaning is to have the coil removed and acid washed periodically. This is a colossal waste of time and money. With the use of Everclean Green’s Force Field system, the HVAC is Self-Cleaning. The performance of a HVAC system can improve by as much as 35%, saving up to 2000 kWh per year per system by installing Everclean Green. With this system you

can throw away those restrictive, costly and annoying fi lters. These fi lters are unnecessary and the need to clean the coil is eliminated, the HVAC system can now operate at peak performance all year, translating into cooler air for less money$$. A clean system is an effi cient system. Oh, and not only do you save money but the Everclean Green system also effectively eliminates airborne particles, toxins, dust, mold, viruses, and bacteria growing and circulating through the system for heather indoor air. This system is now available for existing and new HVAC units in the Panhandle. Stop paying huge electric bills and sweating today. Ask your local A/C contractor about this innovative product today or go to www.evercleangreen.com to fi nd a local authorized contractor for an Everclean Green system.

How appropriate it is that we should be publishing our 2015 Annual Directory the same month we celebrate our four-year anniversary as publisher

of Natural Awakenings magazine. This annual enhance-ment to our monthly issue brings together the hundreds of practitioners and businesses we have had the honor of working with in Northwest Florida. They are focused on your journey to live a healthy lifestyle and care for your surrounding area and resources. Natural Awakenings has always been the area’s go-to-guide for discovering and learning valuable tips and ideas for your lifestyle. We understand that as busy, active people, you need a resource at your fingertips to keep you and your family on track all year. In addition to the Annual Directory, this special edition is sprinkled with profiles and spotlights offering a closer look at and important information about practitioners in our local area. Each year, we are amazed to uncover the cutting-edge developments in our industry and unveil the talented and caring practitioners in our healthy living, healthy planet community. Out of 100 Natural Awakenings publications nationwide, we are proud to say we lead the way in the number and variety of credible natural living resources. This year, in an effort to shine a light our amazing community, we are thrilled to announce our inaugural official natural living event on the Emerald Coast. As we venture into the planning phase, we can share our vision of the event that will be held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on October 17, with expert presenters, headline music and entertainment and screening of several documentary films that reveal groundbreaking research by leading global figures. We anticipate a day filled with mindfulness, stress reduction, meditation and soothing arts, including qigong, tai chi, yoga, guided imagery, breath-work, hypnotherapy and more. Plus, there will be wellness-related experiences such as biofeedback, community acupuncture, oxygen therapy, bodywork and thermography. The weekend will be jammed pack with experiences in a variety of fit body classes, eat well and nutritional workshops, nature outings and outdoor activities. The afternoon and evening will include meandering the weekend fair trade and farmers’ market while enjoying music and art therapy opportunities. All are invited to explore, participate and support the most robust natural living event of the Emerald Coast, thanks to our readers, our advertiser and all those that have contributed to the success of “waking up” Northwest Florida…naturally. We invite you to keep our March issue around as a permanent reference in your life to embrace new concepts and surround yourselves with all the goodness that Natural Awakenings offers—for free.

Have a healthy March,

Scott & Daralyn

newsbriefsFree Seminar on Ideal Protein Weight Loss

Dr. Bawa & Associates will present a free seminar on the Ideal Protein

Weight Loss Protocol at 4:30 p.m., March 11, in the Destin office. Dr. Nitin Bawa explains, “We have helped many lose weight with bioi-dentical hor-mone balancing, thyroid therapy and nutritional guid-ance. This protocol includes health coaching, an addition many patients were needing.” Bawa says, “Ideal Protein is a medically derived weight-loss method with more than a decade of success.” He agrees that losing weight can be more enjoyable when the food sat-isfies our spicy, sweet and salty taste buds, and Ideal Protein offers a variety of instant, easy-to-prepare and ready-to-serve products skillfully developed by exacting French chefs for the best flavor and texture. Dr. Bawa and associates, which specialize in this protocol, will support attendees through detoxification, weight loss and health goals. Dieters receive one-on-one coaching to motivate and educate them, ensuring that they receive the knowledge to confidently make smarter lifestyle choices after dieting. Attendees qualify for a substantial saving on an initial con-sultation fee while getting started on weight-loss and health goals. Location: 1555 Crystal Beach Dr., Destin. For more information, call 850-424-7320 or visit IdealProtein.com.

Gregg Patterson Relates His Miraculous Journey at Unity

Gregg Patterson will speak at Unity of

Panama City at 11 a.m., March 1 about the spiri-tual revelations he and his wife, Megan, received as they walked 500 miles across Spain along the Camino de Santiago Trail. Patterson states, “I grew up attending mainstream church and all the people and les-sons were very positive. But there was one item I struggled with—this was not just this religion, but many others. How could some groups feel they are right and everyone who does not have the exact same beliefs are wrong? What about the people who lived before Christ or other great teachers? I just could not believe they were all going to be punished and go to Hell.” About 350 miles into the hike, Patterson started to come to some conclusions.

Location: 1764 Lisenby Ave., Panama City. For more informa-tion, call 828-719-5131 or visit UnityOfPanamaCity.org.

Cool the Panhandle Funky Bike Fest

The Cool the Panhandle Funky

Bike Fest will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., March 28, this year in Pensacola’s historic Belmont Devilliers neighbor-hood. Bicyclists will gather at Devilliers Square, at Belmont and Devilliers streets, to show off their bicycles to the community and a panel of judges that will select the best and funkiest bikes in town. The Funky Bike contest categories include best antique bicycle, most decora-tive, best children’s bike and best in show. There will be live music, educational information and presentations about safe bicycling, bicycle commuting and creating a more bike-friendly city. Organizer Christian Wagley states, “This year, we’re also holding a session to educate people about how to outfit their bicycle into a truly functional one for commuting, so that they can ride to work or to the store and leave the car be-hind. This is a growing trend all across the country and here in Northwest Florida, too. I’ve been getting around mostly by bicycle for nearly 20 years, and I’m never going back. The world is such a richer place from a bicycle! I can smell the flowers in bloom, tell which way the wind is blowing and what weather is coming, and easily stop for conversations with neighbors and others I meet along the way. I get great exercise along the way while leaving my car behind. I love it!” The event is hosted by 350 Pensacola, which working to empower individuals to take responsibility and to pursue solutions to global warming through local and global action. The local group works with global 350.org along the Gulf Coast to bring people together in a united, concerted and long-term effort to make 350 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere, the safe upper limit, a reality. 350 Pensacola partners with Sustainable Gulf Coast to offer discussion courses and other activities to encourage people to examine their personal values and habits and de-velop strategies for acting on their commitment to a healthy Earth and sustainable future.

Admission is free. For more information, call 850-687-9968 or visit Facebook.com/350pensacola and 350.org.

BUGS LINKED TO FACTORY FARM ANTIBIOTICSThe bacteria E. coli now causes 75 to 95 percent

of all urinary tract infections, and research from Iowa State University has confirmed that such occur-rences are linked to factory farms that use antibiotics. The findings support a study previously completed by scientists from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and George Washington University that shows a strain of antibiotic-resistant E. coli called ExPEC, an extra-intestinal pathogen, was genetically traceable to factory-farmed animals receiving certain antibiotics. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System reports that 75 percent of chicken and turkey, 59 percent of ground beef and 40 percent of pork meats tested were contaminated with E. coli, and that the strains were predomi-nantly multi-drug resistant.

Ginkgo Biloba Calms ADHD, Boosts Memory

Researchers from Germany’s University of Tübin-gen’s Center for Medicine tested the Ginkgo

biloba extract EGb761 on 20 children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a clinical trial. The children were given up to 240 milligrams (mg) of the extract for between three and five weeks. Before, during and after the treatment, the scientists evaluated the children by testing the brain’s

electrical activity, along with other ADHD-related tests. Those that had received the extract exhibited significant improvement in ADHD symptoms. A study from Liberty University, in Virginia, previously examined 262 adults ages 60 and over with normal memory and mental performance and found that the same Ginkgo biloba extract improved their cognitive scores. Half of the study participants were given 180 mg of the extract daily and half were given a placebo. Standardized tests and a subjective, self-reporting questionnaire found the Ginkgo resulted in significant cognitive improvements among the older adults.

Meditation Minimizes Migraines Researchers from the Wake Forest School of Medi-

cine found that mindfulness meditation signifi-cantly reduced the number and duration of migraines among 19 episodic migraine patients. Ten were given eight weeks of mindfulness classes with instructions for adding personal meditation in-between sessions. The other nine received typical migraine care. Those in the meditation group experienced an average of 1.4 fewer migraines per month, which averaged nearly three hours less than the ones experi-enced by those in the control group. Pain levels of the

headaches reported by those in the meditation group averaged 1.3 points lower on a scale of one to 10.

Register Receipts Low Risk for BPAResearch from the Finnish Institute of Occupa-

tional Health has determined that handling cash register receipts, common in credit card transac-tions, can increase exposure of the hormone disrup-tor Bisphenol A (BPA), but that exposure is well within limits considered safe when the receipts are handled under normal conditions. The researchers tested 121 people exposed to the synthetic chemical through their skin and found their average BPA urinary excretion levels averaged 2.6 mi-crograms (mcg) per liter. The researchers then had test subjects handle thermal pa-per three times every five minutes, simulating a store cashier’s handling of receipts. The researchers found those that handled the thermal paper during the simulation test had an average increase in their BPA urinary excretions of just under 0.2 mcg per liter per kilogram of body weight. The researchers noted that this was still 25 times lower than the European Food Safety Authority’s proposed temporary toler-able daily intake of 5 mcg per liter per kilogram of body weight per day. Primary sources of BPA exposure are plastics used in water bottles and many other consumer goods.

Even Modest Drinking Raises Risk of Heart Disease

Contrary to the hypothesis that moderate drinking can be heart-healthy, a new study published in the British Medical

Journal indicates that even light to moderate drinking increases the risk of heart disease. In a large, randomized meta-study, researchers examined patient data from 261,991 European adults derived from 56 studies. Participants were classified as non-drinkers, light drinkers, moderate drinkers or heavy drinkers. The researchers also used a gene variation to determine alcohol intake—a

genetic marker that indicates low alcohol consumption of less than 10 milliliters (about a third of an ounce) per week. They found that those with the gene variation—and thus are virtually non-drink-ers—had a significantly lower risk of heart disease, including stroke and hypertension, and that even light drinking significantly increased heart disease risk. The researchers concluded: “These findings suggest that reductions of alcohol consumption, even for light to moderate drinkers, may be beneficial for cardiovascular health.”

Salty HarvestSeaweed May Be the New LettuceFood items such as kelp, dulse, alaria and laver may be unfamiliar now, but likely not for long, as these and other varieties of edible seaweed and sea vegetables appear on more shopping lists and restaurant menus. These ingredients are already favored by cooks for the jolt of salty goodness they bring to soups and salads and by health food advocates that appreciate their high levels of essential minerals. Goodies in the pipeline include seaweed-filled bagels, ice cream and chips. The trend toward farming seaweed instead of harvesting in the wild is making news. Working waterfronts often go dormant in the winter as lobstermen that work during warmer months move inland out of season for part-time jobs. Seaweed is a winter crop that can keep boats out on the water, providing year-round aquaculture employment. Entrepreneur Matthew Moretti, who operates Bangs Island Mussels, a shellfish and kelp farm in Casco Bay, near Portland, Maine, explains, “Mussels are mono-culture,” so he has been growing sugar kelp between mussel rafts to create a more ecological model.

Holy Batastrophe!Wind Turbines a Kill Zone for European BatsBats are vital natural pest controllers, saving the use of millions of pounds of pesticides by eating insects, but many species are declining across Europe, despite being protected, because wind turbines are seriously harming their populations. “It’s most common in migratory species, with around 300,000 bats affected every year in Europe alone. Bats are found dead at the bottom of these turbines. One option is to reduce turbine activity during times of peak migration,” says Rich-ard Holland. Ph.D., of Queen’s University Belfast, co-author of a study published in Nature Communications that sheds light on the problem. Scientists have discovered the first known example of a mammal to use polarization patterns in the sky to navigate in the greater mouse-eared bat. The study demonstrates that the bats use the way sunlight is scattered in the atmo-sphere at sunset to calibrate the internal magnetic compass that helps them to fly in the right direction. Holland says, “Bees have specially adapted photoreceptors in their eyes, and birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles all have cone cell structures in their eyes which may help them to detect polarization, but we don’t know which structure these bats might be using. Anything we can do to understand how they get about, how they move and navigate will be a step forward in helping to protect them.”

Feeding the WorldUN Lauds Small-Scale, Sustainable Agriculture A recent publication from the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Trade and Environment Review 2013: Wake Up Before it is Too Late, includes contributions from more than 60 experts around the world. They are calling for trans-formative changes in food, agriculture and trade systems to increase diversity on farms, reduce use of fertilizer and other inputs, sup-port small-scale farmers and create strong local food systems. The report includes in-depth sections on the shift toward more sustainable, resilient agriculture; livestock production and climate change; the importance of research and extension; plus the roles of both land use and reform of global trade rules. The report’s findings contrast starkly to the accelerated push for new free trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the U.S./EU Transat-lantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which will strengthen the hold of multinational corporate and financial firms on the global economy. Neither global climate talks nor other global food security forums reflect the urgency expressed in the UNCTAD report to transform agriculture.

Cultivating YouthFarming Seeks to Recruit a New Generation

With an aging population of farmers, it’s clear that agriculture needs to attract more young people, because half the farmers in the U.S. are 55 or older. But for much of the world’s youth, agriculture isn’t seen as being cool or attractive—only as backbreaking labor without an economic payoff and with little room for career advancement. However, with some effort, young farmers can explore contemporary career options in permaculture design, biodynamic farming, communication technologies, forecasting, marketing,

logistics, quality assurance, urban agriculture projects, food preparation, environ-mental sciences and advanced technologies. “Increased access to education and new forms of agriculture-based enterprises means that young people can be a vital force for innovation in family farming, increasing incomes and well-being for both farmers and local communities,” says Mark Holderness, executive secretary of the Global Forum for Agricultural Research. The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project (nesfp.org), in Massachusetts, trains young farmers in how to run a small farm operation, from business planning to specialized advanced workshops in livestock and healthy food. Likewise, the Southeastern New England Young Farmer Network (YoungFarmerNetwork.org) hosts free social and educational events that bring together farmers of all ages and experience levels to network and collaborate.

Felicia McQuaid is the owner of THE Healing Clinic, in

downtown Fort Walton Beach. As an energy healer and holistic prac-titioner for more than a decade on the Emerald Coast, she has made a positive impact on our community. That reach is now expanding to a worldwide audience through her new book, Uncommon Faith – The Journey from Difficulty to Divine Purpose, along with an accompanying guided meditation CD.

What does uncommon faith mean to you?Uncommon faith is faith of action—it's a verb, and not just an idea. It's a place where you start doing some-thing about “it.” Everybody has this thing they are supposed to do. It is to step out into the unknown, risk open-ing up, and declaring with boldness, “I am worthy of living a life filled with peace, love and purpose.”

What brought you to this place of helping others and writing a book?In writing this book, I revealed stories to my husband and children that I've had tucked away. But in going through the memo-ries, I've been able to heal from my abusive past, and now I teach others to do the same by using each experi-ence in life to learn and grow.

What can a person gain from reading your book and listening to the CD?The main lesson is, “How do you live on purpose?” First, you examine who you are as a powerful spiritual being who chose this life and this journey as a means of growth and exploration. The book includes an applied lesson and meditation at the end of each chapter. On the CD there are more than two hours of meditations that I lead. There is a comfort when someone can drop in

and mediate with you.How can others with many roles learn to have the success you've had?Uncommon faith transforms how we see our ourselves. We are more than all of our various roles. We are, foremost, a divine being, connected to the whole of the universe. There is a reason why our paths are filled with difficulty, compas-sion, forgiveness, joy, sorrow, faith and fear. The greatest source of learning is self-investigation. What are others saying about your healing talents? One of my clients, country music star Joanna Cotten, who appeared at the Grammys in February, said, “I was choosing to live small instead of step-ping up to all God had for me. Felicia worked with me to build my faith and confidence back up, and by the time we got done, the symptoms of my au-toimmune disease were gone and I was off all my medication. Her gift is unique and amazing. This book will bless any-one who reads it!”

Understanding Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Physician Dr. April Lee’s Approach to Family Health Care

by Lauressa Nelson

healthykidsspotlight

“My primary goal is to offer a comprehensive approach to family healthcare,” states

Chiropractic Physician Dr. April Lee, the owner of Bluewater Chiropractic Well-ness Center. Because her practice attracts many families, she quickly recognized her special interest in studying chiro-practic for mothers before, during and after pregnancy, as well as children from infants to teens. Lee’s passion for family-based practice and pediatrics has driven her toward becoming a diplomate of the International Chiropractic Pediatric As-sociation (ICPA). Lee says, “Seeing a chiropractor soon after birth is crucial for baby and mother in order to check for sublux-ations,” which is the term chiropractors use to describe vertebrae that are either misaligned or not moving correctly, resulting in nervous system dysfunction. “No matter what type of delivery oc-curs, trauma can occur to the mother’s or baby’s spine and pelvis during the birth process. Typically, we see an issue within six to eight weeks after deliv-

ery, during which babies may develop colic, acid reflux, difficulty feeding or other symptoms,” explains Lee. “My goal is to prevent these issues from oc-curring, which is why getting a new-born into an ICPA chiropractor as soon as possible is absolutely crucial.” Because infants cannot describe how they feel and X-rays are not typically taken, pediatric chiropractors receive extensive training in diagnostic analysis during their diplomate training. The newborn treatment plan is made on a case-by-case basis. “If I find that all is well, then I simply recommend check-ups at the baby’s major milestones, such as crawling and walking. However, if I discover signs of a serious issue, then I recommend further treatment,” Lee explains. She adds that adjustments for infants usually involve the amount of pressure equivalent to pressing an index finger on a closed eyelid. As babies grow into toddlers, Lee advises regular spinal check-ups to evaluate for proper development of the head, neck and spine and to correct

any misalign-ments caused by the bumps and bruises of learning to crawl and walk. The chiroprac-tic approach holds that the effects of subluxations on the nervous system may be linked to a variety of concerns, such as a weakened immune system, chronic ear infections, digestive dysfunction or respiratory disorders. For school-aged children, receiv-ing regular quarterly checkups enables the chiropractor to notice issues like scoliosis and poor postural habits early and nip them in the bud, preventing future complications, illnesses and pain. “Because all nerves travel through the spine, scoliosis can affect the func-tion of our organs. Complications like asthma, abnormal menstrual cycles or digestive dysfunction may develop later in life,” says Lee. “Too much time spent in the sitting posture, working on computers and play-ing video games hinders a child’s ner-vous system, because we are created to move, not to be sedentary. The abnormal posture causes the tightening of certain muscles and the weakening of others,” Lee explains, adding that she advocates the use of a standing or adjustable work station and a gym ball or special cushion for sitting, which forces the engagement of the core muscles. “The more motion the spine has, the healthier the entire body will be,” she says. Bluewater Chiropractic offers

to check backpacks every fall to evaluate the proper weight and size for students and hopes to em-power parents to know what kinds of issues to watch for in children.

“Periodically check your child’s posture and do not wait for your child to develop symptoms, instructs Lee. “With the child standing, parents are able to determine if their child’s hips, shoulders, ears and head are level. If not, there may be problems that a chi-ropractor should examine. For student athletes, especially those in collision sports, we recommend checking them at least once per week during season to evaluate for changes to their spine or nervous system.” “It’s an absolute joy for me to watch children grow up with chiro-practic care in our office,” says Lee. “My staff and I feel like we are all a big family, and I know our patients feel the same. Knowing that I made one child’s life happier and healthier through the benefits of chiropractic is why I do what I do.”

Nitin Bawa, M.D., is a board-certified internal medicine physician, but he has a special inter-est in bioidentical hormones, esthetics and

complementary and holistic medicine. There are not many physicians that understand how to use bioidenti-cal hormones, and Bawa attends many conferences to learn more, including those of the American Associa-tion of Anti-aging Medicine (A4M). Bawa tries to use natural supplements whenev-er possible and is always trying to determine which supplements work. He uses new technologies such as Coolsculpting and has a lot of experience in using lasers to help people look younger. His Pearl laser can help people look 10 years younger and also

performs laser hair and vein removal. Another laser helps with toenail fungus without medication. Genetic testing is becoming more routine, and Bawa is among the first in the area to start using it as a routine part of a complete physical. Bawa graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical School in 2001 and did his residency in internal medicine at the hospital there. He has been in this area for 10 years and maintains three clinics located in Destin, Fort Walton Beach and Santa Rosa Beach. See ad, page 10.

Emerald Coast Functional Family Medicine offers food sensitivity testing, functional medicine and healthy aging consultations,

hormone replacement therapy, medical detoxifi-cation, nutrition, prenatal care, primary care, pe-diatrics, second opinions and specialized testing. Functional family medicine is for every-one, whether you have been battling a chronic disease, been passed from one specialist to the next or you are someone that considers them-self in good health and wants to optimize their well-being. Emerald Coast uses the latest medical research to develop personalized care for each patient based on his or her unique environment, lifestyle and genes. Using a thorough and indi-vidualized approach, we are able to unlock the

root cause of disease and regain health. “My goal in founding Emerald Coast Functional Family Medicine is to help my patients find whole, sustainable health,” says Dr. Kozlowsky. “I do not be-lieve the solution is always found in a prescription pad. While I strongly believe in using medications when necessary, I believe in a broader approach. Whole health includes the mind, the body and the spirit. The three are connected and must be balanced; if we are not well in one, it is impossible to be well in the others.” See ad, page 2.

Gulf Coast, including Pensacola, Perdido Key, Navarre and Destin. With patient-fo-cused pharmacy and dedicated customer service, Gulf Breeze Apothecary takes the time to listen to patients’ needs and provide the highest level of quality and

They specialize in women's and men's hormone replacement therapy pro-grams, but are also a full-service compounding pharmacy, offering all types of compounded medications, including pediatrics, pain management, dermatology, veterinary, sterile compounding, wound, scar and skin care. Compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. This allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the physician and the pa-tient to create a custom medication that fits the patient’s exact needs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated that compounded prescrip-tions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practi-tioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. In addition, compounding is regulated by state boards of pharmacy. Gulf Breeze Apothecary offers free consultations with patients and have saliva testing kits in the pharmacy. Most insurance is accepted and the pharmacy has a full line of premium over-the-counter supplements, as well.

GULF COAST HOLISTIC AND PRIMARY CARERaquel Skidmore, M.D.756 Harrison Blvd., Panama City850-640-1530

Gulf Coast Holistic and Primary Care services include general medicine, EKG, lab work, sports and school physicals, weight-loss

procedures, acupuncture, cupping, herbal alter-natives, nutrition, energy analysis and spiritual counseling. Skidmore says, “When I went to medical school, I noticed that much of the pathology was of “unknown” causes and often considered “in-curable”. Yet there are plenty of statistics about pharmacological drugs, their side effects and their

prognoses. Most of those pharmaceuticals treat only symptom, not causes, and actually create more problems by inhibiting the innate self-healing mechanism of the body.” At Gulf Coast Holistic and Primary Care, “We believe that family medicine should provide continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and fam-ily,” says Skidmore. “Our difference lies in our holistic vision, which in addition to biological, clinical and behavioral considerations, can view the patient’s underly-ing causes, for which we offer a more Eastern view of health and its restoration to overall wellness. It is my mission to provide holistic care and treat the disease, and not just the symptoms, to give the body a chance to heal on its own, which it is designed to do.” See ad, page 19.

Kovar Chiropractic and Natural Wellness Center of-fers chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional analysis, Standard Process whole food supplements, mas-

sage, and physical therapy modalities to assist patients in health and wellness, by using safe and natural methods. Standard Process is devoted to improving the quality of life by providing the safest, most effective, highest quality dietary supplements through health care professionals. His intent is always to educate health-minded people in maintaining their vibrant and active lifestyles, so they may now, and in the future, avoid unnecessary medicines and surgeries, and continue on their life’s journey with optimal wellness.

Over the years, Dr. Kovar has taken many post-graduate classes, and specialty classes in Activator Technique, Sacral Occipital Technique, Cox Traction, and Neuro-Emotional Technique around the country. He became certified in chiropractic rehabilitation after passing the National Board test in 1997 and obtained an acupuncture certification in 2006. He offers nutritional testing, which is done by performing a non-invasive muscle reflex test on the patient. The test will tell what nutritional supplements are needed for the body to function properly and the proper dosage required for that individual patient. This method allows the patient to individualize their nutritional supplementation in order to achieve optimum health and wellness.

Barre comprises a group of movements performed while

clasping a horizontal wooden bar fastened to the wall, turning clas-sical dance moves into modern exercises once reserved for the training of ballet dancers. Today, barre is being offered at Pure Pilates, in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, which have opened classes to those with the goal of the slim, strong, sculpted body of fa-mous dancers like Mikhail Baryshnikov. “Barre classes are in demand.,” says Susan Clark, owner of Pure Pilates. “People want a fun class that tones their hips and thighs and is safe for their joints. Fun, fast-paced music is played [during the session] to help keep the movements precise, and many different props, such as yoga straps, exercise balls and hand weights, are used in conjunction with the exercises to help target muscle groups for strengthening and flexibility. For rehabili-tation, barre is great for strengthening the back and the core in order to help relieve back pain. The standing work not only fo-cuses on the core, but also improves bal-ance.” In barre, there is an emphasis on form and alignment, as well as breathing and the mind-body connection. Christina Snuffin, a former dancer

and current barre instructor, says she uses it to broaden her fitness inter-ests. “Barre has been the perfect combination of strength building, movement and coordination. It

has allowed me as a student and an instructor to incorporate my passion for ballet while also implementing fun and effective sculpting moves to achieve a fantastic workout. I taught all through-out my recent pregnancy and have returned to teaching postpartum; it has been such an excellent method for stay-ing in shape, as well as getting back in shape." “By incorporating barre with the other modalities offered by Pure Pilates, such as Pilates, Kangoo Jumps, TRX, yoga and aerial yoga, people receive a full body workout with an overall focus on posture, strengthening, and control,” says Clark. “Our clients love barre. They leave knowing they had a good workout and always come back for more.”

PRO-ACTIVE CHIROPRACTICBrian L Schuessler, DC4591 Hwy. 20 E., Ste. 201, Niceville850-279-4913 • [email protected]

“We are a results-driven practice that offers

modalities and physical therapies ranging from chiropractic spinal and ex-tremity adjustments, electric stimulation, ultrasound, traction and massage therapy to the newest and most advanced therapeutic laser on the market, the M6 Robotic MLS Laser,” says Dr. Schuessler. The M6 therapy laser is a robotized multi-target device designed to treat patients suffering pathologies affecting a wide area and to perform automatic applications. Thanks to the features of the exclusive MLS multi-diodic optical group, a wide area is treated instantaneously, helping to produce an immediate response of the treated tissues. The results are better and faster than with the scanning modality of traditional laser therapy products. “We are seeing dramatic improvement with patients suffering from knee pain, back pain, hip pain, plantar fasciitis, disc herniation, shoulder pain, tendonitis, bursitis, TMJ disorder, muscle tears, sports injuries, diabetic neuropathy, arthritis, etc. Our MLS Laser is dramatically reducing inflammation, pain, and speeding up healing time for both acute and chronic ailments,” says Schuessler. “The laser is cutting post-operative recovery time by 30 to 40 percent, and it reduces the forma-tion of adhesions and scar tissue.” See ad, page 22.

REGISTER FAMILY FARMJoseph Register850-603-0215Info@RegisterFamilyFarm.comRegisterFamilyFarm.com

We believe in healthy bees and quality products. Register Family Farm is a

honeybee farm run by five members of the Register family in Freeport, Florida. All of our soaps, candles, and lip balms are hand crafted with bees-wax and/or raw honey and packaged by a member of our family. Product development and testing is a lengthy and thorough process for us, and we believe that our natural soaps and lip balms are the best in the business. We designate our honey as “premium” because we are very selective about the quality of the honey that goes into our bottles. We only bottle the very best of the honey that we produce, and we are confident that you will taste the difference.

We pursue excellence in everything we do, and it all begins with grafting and mating our own queen bees to shape the traits of the honeybees in our apiary. Running a honeybee farm is hard work, but we consider ourselves fortu-nate to be able to work together as a family in an endeavor that inspires mutual passion. We love honeybees and we believe in the wonderful benefits of the products we create with the raw materials that their incredible efforts yield.

Pearl Fractional Laser Aims for Deeper Benefits

Excessive exposure to the sun early in life makes us more

susceptible to skin cancer down the road, and pre-mature damage to our skin may well make us look older than we are. Unlike natural aging, this photo-aging results in coarse, dry and leathery skin; freckling and other skin discoloration; and deep wrinkles. New advances in laser technologies include Cutera’s Pearl Fractional Laser, which reaches the uppermost layer of the dermis so that creation of new colla-gen can occur. Used by Dr. Nitin Bawa, a physician and the medical director of Dr. Bawa & Associates, Pearl Fractional Laser treatment and the body’s natural processes comprise a non-invasive, effective treatment that utilizes light energy for advanced healing. Many anti-aging treatments utilize harsh chemicals as an irritant to the skin. Chemical peels can also pro-duce fumes that are inhaled during the process and can often lead to allergic reactions. By utilizing pure light based energy, such as Cutera’s Pearl Fractional treatments, such side effects can be avoided. Pearl Fractional treatments can lead to long-term structural chang-es of the skin, including increased

volume and firmness. The objective of Pearl Fractional Technology is to provide an effective treatment to address lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, discoloration and acne scarring with a shorter recovery period, which is a significant im-

provement over earlier carbon dioxide laser resurfacing. “These new fractional resurfacing techniques, although relatively aggres-sive, may be safely performed on the face, neck, chest and even the hands, and are uniquely effective in treating the delicate tissue around the eyes and mouth,” comments Bawa. “These areas often show the first signs of aging and can be the most challenging to treat.” Bawa describes that the Pearl Fractional Laser works selectively and in conjunction with the body’s own natural processes. “Fractional therapy exposes only a fraction of the skin to the laser beam, in a pattern of tiny dots. Columns of damaged tissue are selectively re-moved, leaving surrounding skin intact. The treatment shortens healing time and stimulates the body’s own natural pro-cess for creating new collagen, plump-ing the skin from below and reversing photoaging and other imperfections.”

The Pearl Fractional Laser can be integrated into a holistic approach, especially when coloration and texture issues resist other treatments that holis-tic dermatologists use for sun-damaged skin, acne scars and age spots. These may include topical creams hosting botanical-based catalysts such as kojic acid, a natural skin lightener derived from mushroom extract; arbutin, also called bearberry extract, for skin whit-ening and anti-aging; and vitamin C; as well as non-ablative dermatological procedures that include chemical peels and dermabrasion.

Dr. Bawa & Associates has three loca-tions: 45 Sugar Sand Ln., Ste. A, Santa Rosa Beach (850-543-4170); 155 Crystal Beach Dr., Ste. 121, Destin (850-424-7320); and 907 Mar Walt Dr., Ste. 2011, Fort Walton Beach (850-586-7890). For more information, visit DrBawa.com.

uses gentle, not forceful, sustained pressure into fascial restrictions. Initially, an elastic part of the fascia will stretch and sometimes be felt by the recipient, the therapist or both. For a real release to transpire, the sustained pressure must be held for three to five minutes or longer. The tight fascia not only stretches, but goes through a transitional phase where it liquefies like melting ice. The result is a release of the straightjacket hold around nerves and sensitive tissues. In addition, during this stage, the body produces certain inter-leukins which are anti-inflammatory. A Barnes MFR therapist often begins a session by looking at the pa-tient’s posture. Deviations observed are used as a guide for how to treat each individual. The goal is working toward a balanced stance. The origin of pain can lie in areas other than where it is felt. Lining up the structure of the body can at times ease pain without even working on the painful area, because softening a restriction can reduce or eliminate its clenching grip. A JFB MFR therapist will most likely give the patient suggestions for self-treatment, because there are a lot of simple, but effective home therapies to release our own myofascial restrictions. Being aware of the major influence connective tissue has on our health can be key to choosing a lifestyle of wellness. Myofascial release can make a difference in the way we feel and move, as well as serve as an adjunct to prevention and treatment of disease. MFR can relieve tightness and pain and even help achieve optimal health by releasing restrictions around organs, lymphatic and blood vessels.

Janet Hardy, LMT, BCTMB, is a board-certified massage therapist and a JF Barnes expert level myofascial release therapist. Contact her at 850-231-9131, CaringTouchTherapy.net or Myofascial Release.com (search find a therapist).

Unexplainable tightness or pain could be caused by restrictions in our fascial tissue. Wrapping

every cell, our fascia, or connective tissue, forms one continuous web from head to toe throughout the entire body, surrounding all structures, not just the muscles. Ideally, the fascia has a fluidity to it, but injuries, surgeries, inflammation and/or poor posture can cause it to become dehydrated and shortened, or “restricted”. Restrictions can pull, twist and squeeze muscles, nerves, blood vessels, organs and lymphatic vessels with an enormous amount of tensile strength. Undiagnosed fascial restrictions do not show up on many standard diagnostic tests such as X-rays and CAT scans, so it’s possible that people experiencing pain or limited mobility could often be dealing with undiagnosed restric-tion. Although fascia, now considered to be part of an organ system, has been known to scientists, it was greatly

overlooked and neglected as an area of study. In most anatomical drawings, fascia is usually removed so the student can more easily see other structures. As a result, curricula in health care fields didn’t pay much attention to how this miraculous tissue influences so many areas of health and disease. With the formation of the Fascia Research Congress in 2007, a new light is shining on fascia. Scientists and researchers worldwide meet biennially to share their latest discoveries with health care professionals and clinicians. All myofascial release (MFR) therapy treatment methods are not the same. John F. Barnes, PT, has been working in the field of MFR for more than 40 years and is considered by many therapists to be the guru of this therapy. He has to date trained more 100,000 therapists, and much recent scientific research is now backing up what he has been teaching for all of those years. Barnes’ method of therapy

We all need air to survive, but pure oxygen delivered at an increased pressure can sig-

nificantly restore lost cellular function and aid in the improvement of chronic illnesses, ailments and wounds. Hyper-baric (high pressure) oxygen therapy (HBOT) delivers 100 percent oxygen at three times higher than normal atmospheric pressure inside a specially designed chamber. Hospitals across the country have been opening HBOT facilities to deal with non-healing injuries, particularly di-abetic wounds. They also treat a number of other conditions that include carbon monoxide inhalation, crush trauma, de-compression illness and radiation tissue damage. One area in particular that has shown great promise is in the treatment of neurological conditions that have failed to respond to or have been mini-mally helped by traditional therapies. HBOT is used hand-in-hand with con-ventional care as a complementary and alternative method to alleviate ailments such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism, ADHD, strokes and cerebral palsy. The U.S. Centers for Disease Con-trol reports that 1.7 million Americans suffer a brain injury each year, with those numbers increasing dramatically dur-ing wartime. Brain injury has been the

most highly reported ailment among all military servicemen and women fighting the conflicts in the Middle East during the past 13 years, and the figures suggest a correlation between TBI and PTSD. In brain injuries, there is usually an initial stage of significant swell-ing of the affected area which HBOT can greatly reduce and resolve. While some nerve cells in the affected area may be dead, others may be in a state of limbo, because blood flow has been diminished. Because oxygen-rich blood is no longer feeding these neu-rons, the cells also have low pressures of oxygen. It is these reduced levels of oxygen in the brain and other injured areas that account for patients’ symp-toms and difficulties in functioning. The way to address these deficiencies is to provide HBOT, which dissolves into the fluids of the body to a much greater extent than is possible under normal atmospheric conditions. Also, Dr. Harch, author of The Oxygen Revolution, states that research has identified 8,101 genes that are impacted by exposure to hyperbaric oxygen. Some genes that are turned on or off involve tissue growth, inflamma-tion and cell death.

Well-known health advisor Dr. Joseph Mercola states, “It’s estimated that globally,

one out of every 10 people suffer from lower back pain. The problem appears to be particularly prevalent in the U.S. According to earlier estimates, as many as eight out of 10 Americans struggle with back pain. Lower back pain causes more global disability than any other condition. With the aging popula-tion, there is an urgent need for further research to better understand lower back pain across different settings. It accounts for 10 percent of all primary care doctors visits each year, costing Americans as much as $86 billion an-nually. According to recent findings, back pain is also the number one cause of job disability worldwide.” Recently orthopedists, neurologists

and chiropractors have been apply-ing laser therapy for pain management instead of pain pills or surgery. Laser therapy has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and proven successful as evidenced by extensive and credible studies conduct-ed at Harvard University and others. Pro-Active Chiropractic, in Nicev-ille, is now offering state-of-the-art MLS laser therapy. Brian L. Schuessler, DC, states, “We have invested in the very best technology as a key component of our continuing quest to offer you the finest in health care.” MLS (multi-wave lock system) laser therapy uses two specific wavelengths (808nm and 905nm) of light that have a strong anti-inflammatory, anti-edema effect on tissues that are exposed to the laser. Painful conditions accompanied

paintherapyspotlight

by swelling or inflammation benefit from this technology. The benefits of MLS laser therapy include: no known side effects; painless and non-invasive; drug-free; rapid relief of pain; strong anti-inflammatory effect; timely healing of sprains and strains; rapid recovery of the structural integrity of injured regions; rapid resolution of swollen areas; immediate improvement of local blood circulation; and rapid repair of superficial injuries such as wounds, burns, and ulcers. MLS technology utilizes a patented combination of two wavelengths that are synchronized to work together like a symphony to deliver superior results. The MLS emission system organizes continuous and pulsed emissions, pro-viding simultaneous anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in considerably reduced times. In addition, this unique patented synchronization of multiple wavelengths creates less “scatter” and allows for safe deep tissue treatment. Scatter can produce heat in the tis-sues and is the reason why with other Class IV therapeutic laser devices; the therapist must keep the laser beam in motion. Treatments take just a few minutes and are painless; however, the therapeutic effects continue to soothe and heal long after the treatment ends. Photons of laser energy penetrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cel-lular reproduction and growth. As a result of exposure to the MLS laser, the cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster. As inflammation is reduced, pain sub-sides very quickly. In simple terms, MLS laser energy not only kick-starts but supercharges the healing process, thereby speeding recovery.Schuessler, says, “When a physical condition or injury affects mobility or quality of life, there is one goal: A rapid return to everyday activities.”

Pro-Active Chiropractic is located at 4591 Hwy. 20, in Niceville. For ap-pointments, call 850-279-4913. For more information about the MLS Thera-py Laser, visit Pro-ActiveChiro.com.

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form diag-nosed in women in the U.S.

Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but is far more common for women. Substantial support for breast cancer awareness and research funding has helped improve screening, diagnosis and treatment, and the num-ber of deaths has been steadily declin-ing. Earlier detection, a new, personal-ized approach to treatment and a better understanding of the disease in general are all signs of progress. In 1982, thermography, also known as digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), was approved as an adjunct to mammograms for early detection. DITI is a noninvasive, painless and safe diagnostic procedure in which an infrared camera is used to record thermal patterns and temperature variations on the surface of the body. These thermal patterns produce digital images (ther-mograms) that reveal sites of physiologic dysfunction and/or abnormal tissue growth, as well as nerve and vascular changes that are invisible to X-ray and MRI. DITI provides several special benefits that missing in a mammogram, such as a radiation-free diagnosis. During a mammogram, breasts are clamped between two plates and radia-

procedure that alerts patients and their doctor to early signs of breast disease. “It is especially appropriate for younger women 30 to 50 years old, whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammography to be effective,” states owner Garry Hendricks, a naturopathic doctor. “Infrared mammography is ideal for woman with dense, fibrocys-tic breast, small or large breast, breast reductions or implants, woman that are lactating and woman that have under-gone lumpectomies or mastectomies.” The first DITI test can provide a clinical marker to the doctor that a specific area of the breast needs particularly close examination. “This first session provides the baseline of your 'thermal signature' and subsequent session assures that the pattern remains unchanged,” explains Hendricks. Medical thermography has been used extensively in Europe, Asia and the U.S. for more than 20 years. Whether as a preventative measure in an annual check-up or as part of taking the next step in addressing a diagnosis, DITI can help make informed decisions that are years ahead of the status quo.

Deborah Sim-kin, M.D., is one of the

few psychiatrists in the Panhandle that practices a comple-mentary and inte-grative approach. In addition to her board certification in child, adolescent and adult psychia-try and her interest in sports psychiatry, Simkin is a dip-lomate with the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. Her practice incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, nutritional and herbal supplements, meditation, medical intervention as needed and neurofeedback (NF).

How Neurofeedback WorksBrainwaves are categorized according to their frequencies, or bands, which are measured in hertz (Hz), or cycles per second. Overall brain activity is a mix of all types of brainwaves at the same time, some in greater quantities and strength than others. In people dealing with challenges related to the central nervous system—such as anxiety, atten-tion deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, depression, post-trau-matic stress disorder (PTSD), seizures, sleep problems, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and others—patterns of brainwaves differ from those of normal brains. There are many types of NF. Simkin specializes in a type that uses low-reso-

lution electromag-netic tomography (LORETA) to map the brainwaves in deep within specific areas of the brain rather than in neurons only on the surface of the brain (as with other forms of NF). A quantita-tive electroenceph-alogram, or qEEG, is used to record a patient’s brainwaves

and compare them against a database of an age-matched sample population of people. A statistical measure called a Z-score provides a range of data that is considered normal. The comparison allows Simkin to identify outliers, or abnormal patterns of brainwaves, that are precisely linked to symptoms of the particular brain dysregulation the pa-tient is experiencing. These brainwaves that appear to be outliers, or abnormal, can be targeted and normalized. In attempting to resolve a particu-lar issue, NF trains the brain to regulate itself and achieve a balance of brain-waves that are within the normal range, because they are stable and efficient in processing information in brain net-works related to the patient’s symptoms. NF relies on the process of operant conditioning, which means that when a specific, desired brainwave frequency occurs, a reward is provided. “The elec-trical pattern soon begins to appear in anticipation of the reward, which leads to it appearing more often,” explains

Simkin, "In this way; the brainwave ac-tivity is shaped toward more desirable and regulated performance. This self-regulation training allows the interven-tion to occur from the inside out, rather than from the outside in, as is the case with medication. Therefore, side effects are minimal. In addition, research has shown, although the studies are small, that even after neurofeedback has been completed, its effects are lasting and even continue to improve.” What to Expect as a Neurofeedback ClientBefore NF is done, Simkin conducts a thorough bio-psycho-social evaluation to rule out any other processes or con-ditions that may mimic the issue being treated. This evaluation may involve testing for genetic markers, nutritional deficiencies, learning disorders, inflam-matory processes (allergies) and other co-morbid conditions such as endo-crine disorders. The results may indicate that other interventions, such as family therapy or substance abuse treatment, need to be addressed before proceed-ing with NF. The LORETA Z Score NF (LZNF) process requires patients to first un-dergo an EEG with eyes opened and also closed. The qEEG is established by comparing the brainwaves of the pa-tient to a normal database. Any patterns of brain waves that differ significantly from the mean average are identified. If the abnormal patterns of brainwaves occur in the area of the brain where the symptoms are known to occur, they are targeted during LZNF. During the NF session, the client is viewing a screen and when the correct brainwave patterns occur, the brain is rewarded with a reinforcement (like a dot appearing or a race car mov-ing on a track). Eventually, the patient will subtly learn how to produce the brainwave pattern and whenever this happens, the reward appears. The length of time the patient must hold the correct brainwave before receiving the reward is lengthened until the brain-wave moves more towards normal.

The Effectiveness of LORETA Z-Score NeurofeedbackSimkin adds that LZNF is superior to many other forms of NF. “LZNF al-lows me to more accurately locate the abnormal patterns using three-dimensional source localization, where the mixture of frequencies under each scalp electrode is accurately unscram-bled and linked to three-dimensional sources deep within the interior of the brain, much like what is seen on an MRI,” she explains. “Hence, LZNF can reach deeper structures in the brain so that the treatment to normalize them can be more precise and completed in an average of 10 to 20 sessions, as compared to the other types of NF, which may require as many as 80 or more sessions. LZNF also allows me to train region-specific brain activity or entire brain networks (for instance, entire brain circuits involved in ADHD). The technique also addresses, if there is too little or too much electrical activity between two areas deep in the brain (often found with learning disorders, autism, PTSD and TBI), which clinicians call ‘coherence’, and if electrical activ-ity is moving too fast or too slow within two areas deep in the brain, which we call ‘phase’. All of these are crucial fac-tors in optimum brain functioning.” Few clinicians are trained in the new techniques used for LZNF. They must be trained in LZNF neurofeedback or supervised by a certified clinician trained in those techniques (with ap-propriate neurobiological background) in order to ensure that proper NF protocols are developed. This ensures that for instance, abnormal pathological brainwaves (and not abnormal brain-waves that actually may be an asset to a patient) are targeted. As spring takes hold in the Panhandle, mil-

lions of monarch butterflies will begin their annual migration from overwinter-ing grounds in Mexico to spring and summer breed-ing territory in the U.S. and

Canada. Students from the Montessori School of Pensacola, have made it their mission to provide critical habitat for the threatened insects, and they’re learning a lot in the process. The insects’ 2,500-mile odyssey has long been recognized as one of the most arduous in the animal kingdom. In recent years, the journey has been made even more difficult by habi-tat degradation and depletion of the butterflies’ food sources. The Jardin de Mariposas, Spanish for “garden of butter-flies,” was the brainchild of Montessori parent and biologist Patty Valentine-Darby. "We really wanted to plant a garden that would attract and provide habitat for a variety of butter-flies and other insects and provide learning opportunities for the students," she said. The garden, planted in the fall of 2013, allows visiting butterflies to rest, refuel on wildflower nectar and lay eggs before continuing north. The school’s efforts were recently recognized by the nonprofit Monarch Watch, which designat-ed the garden an official way station for migrating monarchs. For the voyage to be successful, access to milkweed is critical. Monarch larvae feed exclusively on this inconspicuous plant, meaning the fates of the two species are tied together. But milkweed habitat is rapidly being destroyed by development and the spread of herbicide-resistant food crops. The Monarch Watch way station program is intended to address this threat. In the future, the school plans to integrate the garden even more deeply into their curriculum. Plans include coor-dinating a butterfly release with local specialists during the school’s back-to-school family night in the fall, adding bird-watching stations and other natural elements, and creating ad-ditional butterfly gardens on their lower elementary and early childhood campuses. “We feel this certification is significant for our children because it shows them they can have a direct impact on helping the environment we all live in,” says Kruse. Montessori School of Pensacola (MSP) has been a benchmark for quality education in the greater Pensacola area since 1977, combining the highly respected Montes-sori teaching methods with proven educational practices to provide a unique learning experience for children 18 months old through eighth grade.

An unattended mind is like a neglected garden. Potting soil is incredibly receptive to any seeds introduced to it. It has absolutely no discretion when it comes to

playing host to seeds; it says, “Yes” to all of them. So it is with our mind, which is amazingly receptive to whatever suggestions are dropped into it. It has been said that the subconscious mind cannot take a joke. Whatever is intro-duced to it, it takes as serious instruction to grow that thought-seed into a full-blown plant, be it a flower or a weed. When we pause to consider how many thought-seeds are blown, dropped or purposely planted in our mind on a daily basis, it may prompt us to tend to our mental garden with more regularity. These may come from media, nega-tive conversation or overheard comments. The subconscious mind hears it all and takes it personally. The only way to avoid this type of mind pollution is to be consciously focused on what we want to have planted and growing in our flower box called life. It’s a 24/7 proposition to keep it weeded as thousands of mental seeds constantly pour in. A good full-time gardener plants thought-seeds about their self and others that are rooted in reverence and loving-kindness and skillfully nurtures them. Others will then receive nothing but benefit from the seeds we drop along the way.

Every creature in the animal king-dom has an essential purpose, yet through human interference,

animal life overall has become so imbalanced as to signal a tipping point for Earth. Extreme care for the rapidly growing population of a relative hand-ful of pet breeds stands in stark contrast to trending extinction of dozens of other species. Fortunately, in addition to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, conservationists and supportive law-makers, every one of us can make a real difference.

Home Pet RescuesZack Skow started by volunteering with a nearby dog rescue organization. He became director, and then in 2009 founded his own nonprofit, Marley’s Mutts (MarleysMutts.org), in Tehacha-pi, California, pulling many kinds of dogs out of Los Angeles shelters. “A lot of rescues are breed-specific; I think mutts deserve an equal chance,” says Skow, now the executive director. “Small dogs get adopted faster, so we

get the larger mixes, including pit bulls and Rottweilers.” Currently, the facility continues to expand its services, working with pet foster homes; providing medical care for severely abused animals in need of rehabilitation and socialization; and managing visits to prisons, men-tal health facilities and schools. “We take in who we can help. To see a dog triumph over tremendous odds gives people hope,” says Skow. Recently, volunteers pulled 70 dogs from Los Angeles shelters, fostered them for a month and then transported them east to adoption facilities where conditions were less crowded. Spay/neuter is the best solu-tion to pet overpopulation, says Ruth Steinberger, national founder of Spay First, headquartered in Oklahoma City (SpayFirst.org). From 20 years of experience, she explains that in loca-tions and situations in which surgery is impractical, “We’ve had great results using calcium chloride in ethyl alcohol, done under sedation. A slow

infusion into the pet’s testicles causes them to atrophy. It’s less invasive, with a lower chance of infection and less pain, and reduces testosterone. For feral cat populations where traps haven’t worked, megestrol acetate, derived from progesterone, added to food acts as birth control to slow or stop colony growth.” Treatment of laboratory animals has also improved. “There have been three significant changes since 1984,” says Cathy Liss, president of the nonprofit Animal Welfare Institute, in Washington, D.C., founded in 1951 (awionline.org). “General housing conditions are better, the number of government-owned chim-panzees has decreased and laboratories no longer obtain dogs and cats from random sources, so no stolen pets end up in labs.”

MISSION: ANIMAL RESCUEBig and Small, They Need Our Helpby Sandra Murphy

She reports that animals now are subject to only one experiment, retired for adoption instead of being eutha-nized, and furnished with natural liv-ing conditions on-site—vertical space, an enriched environment with mental and physical stimulation, interaction with other animals and appropriate food and bedding. “Most lab animals are rats and mice,” says Liss. “Any ani-mal has the capacity to suffer. It’s up to us to treat them humanely.”

Farm Animal Stewardship“Animals become ambassadors,” says Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary’s three locations in New York’s Finger Lakes region, Los Angeles and northern California (FarmSanctuary.org) and author of Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food. “Peo-ple are distanced from food sources. Once you learn that sheep love to be petted and pigs like belly rubs, you know an animal as an individual. The best way to help is to share informa-tion, farm animal videos and plant-based recipes, so people can see that going meatless is about far more than just eating produce.”

Page 59: Natural Living Directory, Emerald Coast, March 2015

59natural awakenings 2015

Musician Sir Paul McCartney, author of The Meat Free Monday Cookbook, took the message to schools in 2012. Now students around the world participate in meat-free lunch programs. The adult initiative of going meatless for one or more days extends to 35 countries on six continents. Pigs, cows, horses, peacocks and an alpaca live in harmony at local non-profit Cracker Box Palace Farm Animal Haven, in Alton, New York (CrackerBox Palace.org), which spurs recovery from illness, neglect or abuse. “People get animals without doing research on their care or habits. That’s how we got the peacocks—they have a bloodcurdling scream,” says Farm Manager Cheri Roloson, who rents out their goats as nature’s landscapers to clear brush. Mistreated animals also provide therapy for returning military veterans and abused children at Ranch Hand Rescue, in Argyle, Texas (RanchHand Rescue.org). Kids find it easier to talk about their experiences with an ani-mal that has also endured cruel treat-ment, like Spirit, a horse that received precedent-setting surgery to repair a leg that had improperly healed after being broken by a baseball bat. Conscious chicken farms, too, are making an impact. “Chickens can be well-treated and have a healthy, decent life,” says Jason Urena, marketing manager with NestFresh, which oper-ates 20 small farms and five processing plants, concentrated in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Texas to reduce its carbon footprint (NestFresh.com). Starting with cage-free hens, the Denver company grew based on nationwide customer requests for certified cage-free, free-range, organic, pasture-raised and non-GMO (geneti-cally modified) eggs. “We’re the first in the country to offer certified non-GMO eggs,” attests Urena. He explains that in the process for certification, feed is inspected at every step, from planting seed (usually corn or soy) to storage in silos and mill grinding, to allow traceability for potential prob-lems and avoid cross-contamination.

Wildlife Habitat PreservationThere are few places on Earth that

humans haven’t impacted fragile ecosystems. Loss of habitat and lack of food sources are criti-cal issues. Bats are a bellwether for the impact on wildlife from human-induced

diseases. The

Wildlife Conservation Society studies the loons in New York’s Adirondack Mountains to monitor their exposure to disease and pollution. The mission of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is to use conservation and education to protect present and fu-ture wildlife. Of the 410-plus species of mammals in the United States, 80 are on the endangered species list, reminiscent of the bison that used to number in the millions, but now mostly exist in small bands on private and public lands. NWF aims to build on the bison restoration efforts achieved to date (now numbering tens of thousands) by reintroducing them onto more public

lands, reservations and pro-tected habitats, and like-

wise build up popula-tions of other wild

threatened and endangered

animals. Its programs feature green

corridors to give native species a home and migrating species a rest stop.

“The important message is not how many species have gone off the list, but how many didn’t go extinct,” says David Mizejewski, a celebrity naturalist for NWF. “It’s important to

understand species require different ecosystems. When we quit drain-ing swamps and rerouting rivers and leave them alone in a proper habitat, alligators will come back. Eagles have

fewer young, so it’s not easy for them to recover.” The success in restoring popula-tions of the bald eagle, our national symbol, during the second half of the

“Pets are considered property, and until that changes, it’s harder to

make a difference. Farm animals have no rights at all. Animals are sentient

beings with rights commensurate with the ability to feel pain and

even be valued members of the family. They deserve far more than a property

classification.”

last century was significant. Measures that included banning the poisonous DDT pesticide that contaminated their food and affected reproduction, im-proving native habitats and prohibiting hunting of the bird allowed its removal from the endangered list in 2007. They are still protected by the 1918 Migra-tory Bird Treaty Act. Another raptor, the peregrine falcon, has adapted to urban living in order to survive. Nests adorn tops of buildings and pigeons are a plentiful food supply. Bears, mountain lions and wolves have been dwindling, hunted as dan-gerous, a nuisance or for sport. With fewer of these natural predators, white-tailed deer can overpopulate their habi-tat and starve. Deer and other displaced animals may migrate into suburban areas in search of food, prompting hurtful human reactions to reduce their numbers. The American Bear Association provides safe, seasonal habitats for black bears (AmericanBear.org). Located near Orr, Minnesota, the 360-acre sanctuary also hosts white-tailed deer, bald eagles,

beavers, mink, pine martens, fishers, tim-ber wolves, red squirrels, bobcats, blue jays, owls, ducks, songbirds and ravens. Among movements to protect smaller endangered and threatened animals, the American Tortoise Rescue lobbies for legislation to ban the im-portation of non-native species (Tor-

toise.com). “Turtles and bullfrogs are imported as pets or as food, and many end up in streams

or lakes, where they kill

native

species,” says co-founder Susan M. Tel-lem, in Malibu, California. “They can carry salmo-nella, parasites and tuberculosis,” she explains. Unfortunately, a California law passed to limit importation was revoked within weeks due to claims of cultural bias by politicians lobbying for Asian food markets that sell live turtles and bullfrogs. As the only Association of Zoos and Aquariums-certified wolf facility in the world, The Endangered Wolf Center, in Eureka, Missouri, has been breeding and reintroducing wolves into the wild for 40 years (EndangeredWolfCenter.org). Founded by zoologist and televi-sion host Marlin Perkins and his wife, Carol, they helped increase both the Mexican gray wolf population from nine to 235 in managed care, plus at least 75 in the wild, and the red wolf population from 14 to 160 in managed care, with more than 100 in the wild. Every pack of Mexican gray wolves roaming the Southwest and 70 percent of North Carolina red wolves can be traced back to the center. Wildlife protection laws vary by state. Key conservation successes typically begin with local and regional initiatives promoted by farsighted individuals that care enough to get the ball rolling and back it up with sup-portive legislation. Christian Samper, Ph.D., CEO of the Wildlife Conservation Society, observes, “Zoos and aquariums help the public better understand the natural systems that make all life possible. The hope is that what people understand, they will appreciate and what they appreciate, they will work to protect.” One person’s care can make a difference. For an animal, it can mean life itself.

The 1966 Animal Welfare Act improved the lives of

many commercial animals, but more laws are needed.
