WHY NATURAL HISTORY ILLUSTRATION?The Bachelor of Natural History Illustration at UON is the only degree of its kind in Australia, and one of only a few in the world. This degree brings together the subject areas of art, science, the environment and humanities.

Natural History Illustration is a flexible and diverse discipline that seeks to observe, record and visually interpret the world through creative practices. The degree focuses on developing observation and visual analytical skills, effective research techniques, concept development, communication skills and a technical skill-base.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY You will learn both traditional and digital illustration techniques and will apply these through a diverse range of projects. Through course work you will also learn to:

• identify flora and fauna

• illustrate using a range of painting and drawing media and materials

• work with specimens

• develop resources based on your illustrative work

• produce illustrative work for specific areas of science

• produce anatomically accurate sketches

• work on location in the field

• study habitats and cultures

• use laboratories and equipment to observe and research a variety of subjects

• use digital platforms to capture, produce, edit and contextualise your illustrations for publication and display

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCEYou will have access to facilities like the Specimen Collection and Wildlife Lab, the Cultural Collections and the Anatomy Labs. Through applied project courses you can connect with Industry organisations such as the Australian Museum, the Australian Reptile Park, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Department of Primary Industries, the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), Hunter History Initiative, HMRI and similar organisations. These projects will allow you to develop an industry network and a professional portfolio.

REAL-WORLD RECOGNITIONA wide range of awards and prizes are offered to outstanding students, including the Australian Geographic Natural History Illustration prize. Many of our students also have their own work featured in gallery exhibitions and media publications.
