Stressisbelievedbysometocauseor contribute to60 to90percentof all visits to the doctor. We

know we are stressed when we havefeelingsoffrustration, anger, nervousness, fear, unease and worry. These feelingsalso directly affect our body—wemay experience abdominal pain andheadaches, aswellasmuscle tightnessorpain.

Tension andTrauma ReleasingExercises (TRE) is a technique thatuses six simple exercises to releasestress and tension from the bodythat accumulates from traumatic lifeexperiences, immediate or prolongedstressful situations or our everydaycircumstancesoflife.

These exercises help release deeptension from the body by evoking aself-controlledmuscularshakingcalledneurogenictremors.Thesegentletremorsoriginatedeep in thecoreof thebodyin the psoas muscles and reverberateoutward along the spine, releasingtensionfromthesacrumtothecranium.Theexercisesconsistofasimpleformofstretchingandareusedtogentlytriggerthesevoluntarymuscletremors.

TRE was developed to be a self-help technique that can be integratedwith and complement other healthmodalities, includingyoga, craniosacral

therapy, massage, meditation, exerciseandcounseling,amongothers.

The exercises developed from Dr.DavidBerceli’sworkwithcommunitieswhile living inAfrica and the MiddleEast, andarebasedonthefundamentalbelief, backedbyresearch, thattraumaisprimarilyanexperienceofthephysicalbody.Hebelievesthatjustasthehumanbodyhasanaturalphysicalreactiontotraumaticandstressfulsituations, italsohas natural physical mechanisms fordealing with and healing from traumaandchronicstress.Bertelliwrites,“Thehumananimalisdesignedtoexperience,endureandsurvivetraumaticepisodes.”

We know the body constantlyresponds toelevated levelsofstressbycontracting themuscles to get throughtoughsituations, butweseldomrecognizethese contractions until we experiencepain, discomfortorillness.Bypracticingthispreventivetechnique, wecanpreventstress and tension from elevating to apointofchronicillness, oruseittoassistin alleviating chronic, stress-inducedillness.
