News & Notes Welcome Father Andrew Muliika

The Mission of the Catholic Diocese of Butare in Rwanda

Rwanda is a small country situated in the middle of Africa that in 1994 experienced a horrific genocide that was politically motivated during which one million people were murdered in approximately 100 days. The genocide left behind many broken hearted like orphans, widows, traumatized..., and many destroyed infrastructures like schools, medical centers, even churches. The good news is that, now there is peace and security in the country. The challenge is to rebuild the nation and to help people in the process of healing. The mission of the Diocese of Butare is focused on

Catholic education, teaching the youth unconditional love,

peace and reconciliation so that the country may heal and

experience a brighter future. These efforts have made a

great difference in the hope of the Catholic Church and

have contributed tremendously to the building of a new

Rwanda we see today. The Catholic Faith in Rwanda is

strong and there are many holy vocations. Today, 60% of

the country’s population are Catholics. The financial

support from you our brothers and sisters in Christ will

help us to build more classrooms, to buy school supplies,

and it will enable us to carry on our mission of making the

love of Christ known and felt to the people of Rwanda.

Thank you for your generous support and may God bless

you abundantly.

Please welcome Dr. Kim Ehrhardt as the new principal for Nativity of Mary Parish School effective August 1, 2019. Dr. Ehrhardt has extensive experience as an educational leader in both private and public-school systems. His first principal assignment was at St. Patrick’s School in Janesville followed by assignments in the Albany School District and the School District of Janesville at Franklin Middle School. He concluded his career in the district as Director of Instruction and Student Services until his retirement from the district in 2017. Dr. Ehrhardt also serves as a private educational consultant for the schools in the Arch Diocese of Milwaukee and the International Center for Leadership in Education. Also, Dr. Ehrhardt has taught graduate courses in educational leadership for Cardinal Stritch University and education courses for the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Ehrhardt looks forward to the opportunity to return to his “roots” by again serving in a leadership position in Catholic Schools with the assignment at St. Mary School. Dr. Ehrhardt is married to his wife Lisa (an educator for 35 years) and they have two children, two grandchildren and a golden retriever named Molly. The Ehrhardt’s have resided in Janesville since 1979. Dr. Ehrhardt has appreciated the support and warm welcome from Pastor Father Rob and members of the school interview team. He also looks forward to serving the students and parents of St. Mary School by contributing to the school’s rich legacy and tradition of excellence as we move into the 2019-2020 school year.

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants." - Lk 12:37-38

************************************************************ Tickets booked, packing list double-checked, itinerary set - how do you know you're prepared for a trip? Being ready requires plenty of practical preparation. Do we give the same care to our spiritual preparedness? "Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom," Jesus tells us. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus reminds us to have the right attitude for the gifts and callings he wants to give us! Clear out your clutter! "Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." Jesus reminds the disciples that earthly standards of security and success will wear out in time. If our lives are structured around values that don't align with the kingdom of God, we'll miss opportunities to receive God. If we're so concerned with our child's success in sports that we miss Sunday Mass for their tournaments, we're missing out receiving the sacraments and building a consistent community of faith. If our quest for the promotion takes us away from family commitments, we won't be able to fully receive the love intended in our closest relationships. Set faith-based priorities. "Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival." Our conflicting commitments can cause any routine to slip from time to time. All the more reason to make sure faith is a priority. Pray as a family before meals. Bring your children regularly to the sacrament of confession. Make room in the schedule for faith enrichment activities offered by your parish. Volunteer once a month. "At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." When will the call come to care for an ailing parent? To take on a new leadership position? God speaks to us through the circumstances of our lives. He calls each of us to greater love, sometimes in very concrete ways. This week, take some time to consider: Will you be ready?

What’s Happening

Did you attend St. Mary School? We are updating our list of alumni from St. Mary School and we need your help. Please contact the school office by mail (313 E Wall St, Janesville 53545), telephone (608-754-5221) or email ([email protected]) with your name, former name (if applicable), current address, telephone number and email address.

Taize’ Prayer began in the little community of Taize’, France during the 1940s following the destruction of World War II. A group of religious men sought to create an ecumenical form of prayer that would foster reconciliation and peace among all people. Today, Taize’ Prayer is celebrated throughout the world, bringing Christians of all traditions together to sing, to hear God’s words in Scripture, and to listen in silence for God’s voice in their hearts. In that spirit, we gather at St. Mary’s as we have since February 1998, to offer this prayer. You are invited to experience Taize’ Prayer here on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM. You will find it an opportunity to take a few moments from the busyness of your life and simply be in God’s presence. Summer is passing quickly. Give yourself a midsummer gift of time—to step back, take a deep breath, savor the moment, and reflect. Taize’ Prayer is an invitation to do all of that—the second Monday of each month, year round. Our time together will offer a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds and simply be in God’s presence. Come and bask in the light of candles, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, and listen in silence for God to speak to your heart. Come to St. Mary’s on Monday, August 12 at 7:00PM for a peaceful and enriching prayer experience.

TRAVELING CHALICE SIGN UP

Our parish is in its 10th year of praying for vocations

through the Diocese’s Traveling Chalice program. We have

grown from parishioners hosting each week in 2010 to our

hosts including homebound parishioners, Religious

Education classes and every grade level at our parish school.

That’s a lot of prayers for vocations!! We also now include a

vocation lesson for each grade level in Religious Education

and our school. In short, thanks to our enthusiastic and

supportive parish, our program has grown to be prayer and

so much more!! And we are seeing the fruits of all that

prayer here and in many, many of our Diocesan parishes, as

not only are our children learning what a vocation is and

how to discern what their own vocation is, but the number

of seminarians for our diocese is holding steady at around

30. This is a huge jump from the 6 seminarians we had in

2006 when the Traveling Chalice program was begun by the

Serra Club. In short….prayer works!! God hears, and He

provides!! We are now at the end of our 2018-19 hosting

year and it’s time to fill hosting weeks for 2019-2020 so that

prayers can continue. So, we are looking for parishioners to

host the Traveling Chalice and pray for vocations. There will

be a sign opportunity after all the Masses on August 17-18.

Please consider hosting. It’s prayerful, it’s easy and it’s oh

so ever helpful to our faith!
