The mission of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is to promote and strengthen the sport of wrestling in Massachusetts. We do this by preserving the history of Massachu-setts wrestling, recognizing our excellence, and inspiring future generations to learn from our great sport.

As a state chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Massachusetts Chapter carries forth the goals of our national organization by celebrating the excellence of wrestlers, coaches, officials, and other contributors to Massachusetts wrestling.

LIFETIME SERVICE TO WRESTLING: an individual who has dedicated at least twenty years of meaning-ful service to the sport of wrestling.

MEDAL OF COURAGE: a wrestler or former wres-tler who has overcome insurmountable challenges or made heroic sacrifices.

OUTSTANDING AMERICAN: a former wrestler who has applied lessons learned from wrestling to achieve notable success in another area of life.

Our inductees are enshrined in the State Chapter Gallery of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Museum in Stillwater, OK. In the museum, our inductees take their rightful place alongside other wrestling greats from across the country who have contributed to the sport of wrestling.

The DAVE SCHULTZ AWARD is presented by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame to the top wrestler from each state who displays outstanding character and academic performance.

In addition, the Massachusetts Chapter selects ex-ceptional student-athletes who aspire to wrestle in college for JAMES PECKHAM SCHOLARSHIPS.

The MASSACHUSETTS WRESTLING ROOTS and the BAY STATE PRIDE awards are presented to individuals who have made other contribu-tions to the Massachusetts wrestling community. Coach-of-the-year, outstanding wrestler, and various honors are presented to recognize stellar performances by athletes, officials, and coaches.

We take great pride in the Massachusetts State Chapter programs, including our website (http://nwhof.org/massachusetts/), our spring awards ceremony, and our induction banquet. All of these things preserve our wrestling heritage and celebrate the individuals who have made notable contributions to Massachusetts wrestling.

Dr. John Passarini

It takes special qualities to be a teacher and a coach. In John Passarini’s case, his extraordinary career has been marked by two outstanding qualities – passion and compassion.

The Newton native established the Waltham wrestling program in 1970 and compiled a 145-57-2 record in 12 varsity seasons. Passarini was twice named Co-Coach of the Year along with the “Legend” Larry Tremblay. His teams won two Suburban League Championships and three Central Mass. Sectional Championships. Passarini is the proud member of the Massachusetts Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame (1986) and the Waltham HS Athletic Hall of Fame (2007).

After 18 years in the Waltham system, Passarini joined the Wayland faculty and served there from 1988-2004 as the System Wide Adapted Physical Education Specialist. In 2000 Passarini was named the AAHPERD National Adapted PE Teacher of the year. In 2001 he won the Council for Exceptional Children’s “Going the Extra Mile” Award.

What separates Passarini from everyone else is the time he spends with each individual athlete and student. Passarini develops deep connections with his students and athletes by not only being a coach and teacher, but by deeply caring about them. Teaching and coaching was not an hourly responsibility for Passarini, but a 24-7 devotion

Passarini, a Lexington resident, believes that “nobody is disabled; we are all differently abled.” His program is based on a fundamental respect for the dignity and value of each child.

The pinnacle of his success was his selection as the 2003 Disney National Teacher of the Year, chosen the top educator from a pool of 185,000 nominees.

Passarini had been nominated for the Disney award in 2002 by one of his adapted physical education students, Katie Lynch, whom he had met when she was a seventh grade student in Wayland in 1988. Passarini and Lynch developed a special bond from the moment they met until Lynch’s death in 2003.

Lynch was born with a connective tissue disorder and was only 28 inches tall. Yet she had a magnetic personality and despite severe physical challenges and more than a dozen life threatening surgeries, she had a brilliant mind and a “never give up” attitude.

When Passarini received his Doctorate in Education at Boston University in 2001, he received a graduation card from Lynch that read, “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles by it.” Passarini’s career as a teacher and coach has been marked by lighting others’ candles.

OUTSTANDING AMERICANTHE MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OFTHE NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

Part of the motivation for Passarini’s career was the education he received in the Newton public schools. Born into an Italian immigrant family, Passarini struggled academically, repeating second grade.

His turning point came when he was a seventh grade student at Meadowbrook Junior High, where he learned to understand and compensate for his learning challenges and become a dedicated and confident scholar.

At Newton South High, he captained three sports — football, wrestling and baseball — and was elected to the National Honor Society. Passarini was a first team Boston Globe All Scholastic Football selection, a New England Wrestling Champion, and the All Suburban League Baseball Catcher. He also won the Boys Senior Cup, which went to the top male graduate. In 2009 Passarini was inducted into the first class of the Newton South HS Athletic Hall of Fame.

At the University of Connecticut, Passarini played football and wrestled for 4 years and began his interest in adapted physical education after meeting Dr. Hollis F. Fait. “He was a beautiful blend of academics and compassion,” said Passarini. I remember thinking, “What a wonderful man, I want to be just like him.”

As he heads to his 70th birthday and 48th year of teaching, Passarini remains active. As an adjunct professor at Salem State University, he teaches both undergraduate and graduate Adapted P.E. , Perceptual-Motor Development, Methods and Principles of Coaching, and Health and Wellness. In addition, he teaches three classes of Adapted PE for the Swampscott Public Schools. Passarini is currently training for his 17th Annual Best Buddies Hyannis Port Challenge Bike ride and has raised over $48,000.00 for this wonderful organization.

Passarini has been married to his wife, Gloria, for 43 years. They have three sons — John, Tom and Michael — and their beautiful daughter-in-law, Jennifer. The Passarinis have one grandson, Jacoby.

Robert Anniballi

To say Bob Anniballi has been immersed in wrestling for the last 35 years would be a gross understatement. Whether it was wrestling in high school, his coaching high school teams to unprecedented titles, or coaching MA select teams to regional and national tournaments, Bob has done so much in the sport of wrestling.

A 1985 graduate of Natick High School, Bob captained the wrestling team both his junior and senior year. Anniballi went on to Framingham State University and during his freshmen year a visit to his former mentor, John Carroll, put Bob on this terrific journey. While a student at NHS, Bob developed a close relationship with legendary NHS Athletic Director, John Carroll. Carroll was looking for an assistant wrestling coach for the season and asked Bob if he could take the junior varsity position for “one season;” Bob has not stopped coaching since!

Bob’s career dual meet record currently stands at 483-53-3 in his 27 seasons as head coach at Natick High and including time at Keefe Technical High. He has coached over 125 State Place winners and 53 All-State Place Winners (Est. 1994). Bob credits his mother Ann for his career in education. During a time when Bob was immersed in coaching and MA USA wrestling, he was also taking classes, working various jobs, and feeling uncertain about what path to take. Ann said, “you obviously have a passion for working with kids, go back to school and get your teaching degree.” Bob was a special education teacher and coach at Keefe Tech before returning to Natick. Bob is currently the Director of Wellness for the Natick Public Schools. The Physical Education program in Natick has been nationally recognized under Bob’s leadership. He has been married to Kori, whom he met at Keefe Tech, for the last 14 years and they have two sons, Michael 12 in June, and Eddie 10 in May.

In the spring of 1987, Anniballi was approached by then Framingham South wrestling coach, Gordy Wrin. Along with Framingham North coach, Dan Balboni, the three “Italian Hot Heads” founded the MetroWest Wrestling Club. Their mission was simple; provide a no-cost opportunity for in the MetroWest area wrestlers to learn Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. The club practiced two nights a week and traveled to local, regional, and national level tournaments. It was during this time that Wrin encouraged Bob to get into officiating. As a referee for the MA USA Wrestling, Anniballi grew as a coach and mentor. Anniballi was invited to join the MA coaching state staff and eventually became the head Freestyle coach as well as an executive board member. An all-volunteer organization, MA USAW ran over 20 tournaments each spring and took MA All-Star teams to regional and national events. Anniballi credits much of his success in coaching to his experience with USA wrestling at the local and national level.

LIFETIME SERVICE TO WRESTLINGTHE MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OFTHE NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

It is Bob’s role as the NHS wrestling coach that has solidified his legacy in the wrestling community. First, as assistant coach from 1986-1989, Anniballi took over as head coach for one year in 1990. After a brief stint at Keefe Tech where he coached both soccer and wrestling, Bob was lured back to Natick in 1992. Having persuaded former Boston Latin coach Ed Smith to join him in Natick, Anniballi and Smith’s first season began 0-5. The Redmen went on a 14-0 run and placed 2nd at the Division I Central sectionals, well ahead of several teams that had handed them early season losses. The following season Natick won sectionals and placed 2nd at the Division II state tournament and have never looked back.

Natick continues to be a state powerhouse today, winning the Bay State Conference 23 out of the last 24 seasons. From 2003-2009, Natick had an unprecedented 68 match win streak, the longest in the history of the conference. Coach Anniballi has also led Natick to 13 sectional titles and two state titles in 2010 and 2017. During his 25 year run as head coach, Natick has placed in the top five at the state tournament a remarkable 21 times. This current season saw the Redhawks go 11-0 in conference matches and 26-2 overall.

The Redhawks are D2M Sectional Champions and captured their first D2 Dual Meet State Championship title. Anniballi has been named the Boston Globe coach of the year 3x’s, 2000, 2010, and this past season, 2017. In 2010 he was inducted into the MIWCA Hall of Fame.

Coach Anniballi is thankful for all of his assistant coaches over the past 30 seasons: Mike Kane, Garth Yohn, John Adams, Greg Sinclair, Marty Geoghegan, Phil Brown, Brian Linton, Rob Dombroskas, Mike Buono, Nick DiAntonio, Joe Giudice, Mike Breau, Dave Nelson and a very special thanks to longtime assistants, Ed Smith, Kevin “Tuna” Thomas and Chad Sinclair. Bob values the many lasting friendships wrestling has given him. From his fellow high school tri-captains Bob Kelly and Eric Ramstrom, who have remained very close friends today, to rival coaches and especially the student-athletes from Natick and his experiences with the state teams, he considers it a privilege to have had the opportunity to shape legions of young wrestlers into successful individuals both on and off the mat. Bob treasures his memories and experiences with all of his current and former wrestlers and is pleased to share his hall of fame recognition with them.

Thomas Bartosek

Occasionally, a coach will create an opportunity to advance our sport in creative ways. Due to the effort and perseverance of men like Tom Bartosek, Massachusetts wrestling has grown and prospered.

Growing up on a small farm near Toledo, Ohio left a lasting impression on Tom. Farming taught him that preparation, patience, and hard work were vital to the success of the harvest. Tom will readily admit that he was unathletic, but he enjoyed being a member of the outstanding Northwood, Ohio HS wrestling team under legendary Coach Jim Derr.

Tom left Ohio to study at Boston College in 1968. After graduating from BC, Tom worked for a number of years in the Department of Biochemistry at Boston City Hospital and at the Sidney Farber Cancer Research Center. Tom left research to teach biology and chemistry for 32 years in Weymouth, Silver Lake, and Canton.

When Weymouth South HS could not find a coach, Tom took over a struggling program and successfully turned it around. He eventually left to teach and start wrestling programs at Silver Lake and Canton High School.

It’s in Canton that Tom achieved his greatest success. Tournament championships were prominent benchmarks in the success of the Canton wrestling program. The pride derived in producing four state champions and numerous placewinners were meaningful achievements for the entire team. In addition, on four occasions, the Massachusetts Wrestling Officials Association honored the Canton High School team with the MIAA Sportsmanship Award. While some teams found it hard to fill their lineup, Canton consistently produced large and talented squads. To cap it off, Tom was selected as the Boston Globe “Coach-of-the-Year” in 2002 and inducted in the Coaches Association “Hall of Fame.”

In addition to his work on the mat, Tom discovered other avenues to help the wrestling community.

Tom Darrin, Past President of the MIWCA explained that “for twenty years Tom worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to get stories and recognition for wrestling in newspapers and magazines.”

Because of Tom’s attentiveness, numerous wrestlers were selected for All-American honors in Wrestling USA Magazine. Worthy candidates were chosen for Wrestling USA Magazine’s “Massachusetts Man-of-the-Year” award, “National Writer-of-the-Year” award and the Dave Schultz Excellence in Wrestling Award.

LIFETIME SERVICE TO WRESTLINGTHE MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OFTHE NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

Dan Ventura, the Scholastic Sports Editor for the Boston Herald reflected on Tom’s work when he said that Tom “was a tireless supporter of the sport and we have all benefited from his knowledge and dedication to wrestling.” Ventura went on to say, “I consider myself blessed to know Tom – a class act in every sense of the word.”

In other ventures, Tom worked with coaches to lobby the NCAA to bring the Division-I Wrestling Tournament to Boston and to start wrestling programs at universities in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. The only televised MIAA wrestling event was broadcast on Comcast Sports in 2007, as a direct result of Tom’s effort. A longtime proponent of girl’s wrestling, Tom led a campaign to establish an MIAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament.

In a capstone of his creativity, Tom is writing a history of Massachusetts wrestling including Olympic competitors, AAU placewinners, college All-Americans, high school team champions and biographies of luminaries such as Jim Peckham, John Lee, Doug Parker, Homer Barr, Rodney Smith and many others.

When Jim Peckham spearheaded the formation of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Hall of Fame in 1998, he gathered together a trusted group of friends to help him establish the chapter. To underscore the significance of this evening, Jim personally asked for Tom’s help in this endeavor.

Another original member of the Chapter, Steven Biondolillo explained that ”Tom has been the primary force in making sure that the National Wrestling Hall of Fame – Massachusetts Chapter survives, flourishes and stands out in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Chapter program.”

Tom credits his Mother Ann, Father Emil and Sister Patty for their love and encouragement. Carolyn, Tom’s wife for 42 years, is the foundation of his family. His daughter Emily and son Brian bring him happiness and fulfillment.

Without the help of his assistant coaches, Tom could never have accomplished his goals. He is forever grateful to the support and encouragement of his fellow coaches, teachers, staff, administrators, parents and wrestlers over the years.

In recognition of his accomplishments, the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is proud to honor Tom Bartosek with the “Lifetime Service” award.

Patrick Coleman

Pat Coleman began wrestling as a 7th grader in Westbury, N.Y. and went on to be the top high school wrestler for the Dragons. He recorded two undefeated dual meet seasons before becoming a North Shore (Long Island) champion and “Outstanding Wrestler” at the tournament in 1967. He enjoyed an excellent college career at Harvard where he was voted captain of the Crimson’s most successful team to date (15-4 in 1971). A 3-year varsity starter, Coleman was 2-time All-Ivy, 2-time Easterns place-winner, New England NCAA regional champion and 2-time D-1 NCAA qualifier. He was honored as the recipient of two Harvard wrestling awards.

Pat began his coaching career at Brookline H.S. in 1971 and went on to coach at Newton North H.S. from 1972 to 1983 where his Tigers won 125 meets and were 2-time Suburban League champions and 3-time D-1 Central Sectional champs. In 1986 he was voted into the Massachusetts Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame at the age of 37. He changed jobs and didn’t return to coaching until 2002 when he started up a very successful Norton Youth Wrestling team at the Norton Program Center of the Attleboro YMCA.

Next, Coleman proposed starting a team at Norton H.S. and the school committee approved. In 2006, the Lancers competed as a JV team and moved up to varsity competition in 2007. During 11 years of Norton varsity wrestling, Coleman’s teams earned an outstanding record of 256-64. The Lancers won D-3 state wrestling championships in 2012 and 2014 and were runners-up in 2013 and 2016. In addition, the Lancers won 4 sectional titles and 8 league championships. Coleman is equally proud of the state sportsmanship award won by his team in 2014 (voted by the Massachusetts Wrestling Officials Association) as well as the two MIAA Gold Level Academic Excellence Awards that his Lancers achieved in 2016 (team GPA 3.21) and 2017 (team GPA 3.14)

Pat has been voted “Coach of the Year” for the Tri-Valley League (2x), D-3 South & Central Sectionals (5x), local newspapers (5x) and D-3 States (2x). His wrestlers have won 5 individual state titles and 21 individual sectional titles. 11 of his wrestlers have won over 100 matches in their careers, a milestone achievement. In 2012, Coleman was honored as the “Massachusetts D-3 Coach of the Year” by the Boston Globe.

Coleman is married and the proud father of four terrific children (James, Daniel, Julia & Scott) and three wonderful grandchildren (Nora, Laurel & Sam). His youngest son, Scott, won a state title at 145 lbs. for the Lancers in 2012 and holds the team record for most career wins (148). Pat’s wife, Dinny, is affectionately called “Mrs. Coach” by the wrestlers and their parents for her dedication to the team. Pat says that he couldn’t have accomplished what he did without her help and support.

Coleman gives much credit to his dedicated and talented assistant coaches over the years, especially Jim Cain (Brookline), Norm Walker, Peter Capodilupo, and Richie Starr (Newton North), Peter Holmes, Brian Gallagher and Jeff Francis (Norton) and to the outstanding young athletes and their parents with whom he has had the pleasure of working over the years.

Craig Stone

Craig Stone was born and raised in Warwick, Rhode Island along with his two siblings, his twin sister Sharlene and his younger sister Karen. The son of a plumber and a housewife/secretary (neither who attended college), Craig was raised with a value system that emphasized a strong work ethic, doing what was right, and a strong commitment to family.

Growing up, Craig attended the YMCA and joined the Boy Scouts, both of which were tremendous influences in his life. He was the traditional three-season athlete playing football, basketball, and tennis. Friends encouraged him to try wrestling, and even though he was always intrigued by the sport and attended several matches, he couldn’t get himself to step on the mat.

That changed in the fall of 1967 when Craig enrolled at Springfield College. He took wrestling as a sport skill class during his freshman year, and then decided to take the leap in representing his class in an intramural tournament. After experiencing some success, the freshman coach encouraged Craig to try out for the team, and before he knew it, he was hooked and remained on the team through his college years.

After graduating from Springfield College, Craig received his Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Oregon. He took his first job in education for Lynnfield Public Schools in Massachusetts in 1972. Three years later, 20 high school students signed a petition to start a wrestling team. Stone applied for the coaching position, and in 1975 Lynnfield High School had a club team, elevating to varsity status the following year.

As his career progressed, Craig took note of declining enrollment numbers and decided to act. In 2005, he formed a co-op with North Reading who had previously dropped their program. The merging of two teams has been an invaluable experience for Craig, his wrestlers, and the communities, while it allows everyone involved to continue to reap the benefits that wrestling provides.

Stone’s impressive coaching record and list of honors is representative of his dedication and commitment to the sport and his athletes. His current career coaching record stands at 531-313-7. His teams have won 5 league championships, 3 sectional championships, and finished as state finalists in 2014. Craig has coached 84 state place finishers and 8 state champions. He has been named Cape Ann League Coach of the Year 8 times and The Boston Globe Coach of the Year twice. Craig was inducted in the Massachusetts Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998, and received the National Wrestling Coaches Association Massachusetts Coach of the Year Award in 2013. He also received the North Shore Student Athlete Lifetime Commitment Award in 2013, the Honorary Lynnfield Rotarian Award in 2015, and served as Sectional Chairman of the MWCA Executive Board for over 30 years.

LIFETIME SERVICE TO WRESTLINGTHE MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OFTHE NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

Craig attributes his success to a coaching style that emphasizes clear and effective communication between athletes, parents, teachers, and administrators. Letting all parties understand their roles in supporting each other and recognizing their required individual contribution is key, while being open to everybody’s input is equally as important. The cornerstone of his coaching philosophy is TEAM which stands for “Together Each Achieves More” a mantra that Stone has used throughout his career. Stone’s objective perspective helps balance the highs and lows of the sport, and his genuine concern for his wrestlers as both athletes and young adults helps drive their success. Stone’s hope is that he has instilled the values of hard work and perseverance in his wrestlers, and that they take the invaluable life lessons wrestling teaches with them on their journeys.

Craig retired as an elementary physical educator in June of 2016 after 44 years in the same teaching position, and has now completed his 42nd year of coaching wrestling. For the past 36 years, he has also coached the girl’s tennis team at Lynnfield High School during the spring season, accumulating another highly-esteemed record of 563-84.

Teaching and coaching in Lynnfield, and later in North Reading where he currently resides and where his children went to school has been a dream come true. Stone is grateful to the talented student-athletes, caring parents, supportive communities, and professional networks that have shaped his career. He extends his gratitude to his wife Patty of 39 years, his two children, Michael and Jenna, his daughter-in-law Liz, and his prized grandchildren, Jillian and Samantha.

Through their actions and their character, these young men are perpetuating the legacy of James Peckham, the founder of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Coach Peckham believed in the power of education and understood the value of wrestling as a foundation upon which to build one’s life.

The Peckham Family would like to recognize the past recipients of the James C. Peckham Scholarship Award:

MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

JAMES PECKHAM – OUR FOUNDER AND FRIEND

PRESERVING OUR WRESTLING HISTORY ~ RECOGNIZING OUR EXCELLENCE ~ INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS

James Peckham is a legend in Massachusetts wrestling circles whose contributions to the sport spanned more than a half-century. Peckham’s impact was immense; he was a role model and mentor to countless athletes and coaches across the region.

As a wrestler, Peckham competed in the freestyle and Greco-Roman styles, training with coaches at MIT and Milton Academy. In 1954, after winning an AAU championship, Peckham was selected to represent the United States as a member of the Greco-Roman Olympic wrestling team. During the 1956 Olympics, Jim lost a controversial decision that cost him an opportunity to wrestle for a gold medal.

In 1962, Peckham started a collegiate coaching career that would last for thirty years, coaching first at Emerson College (while also serving as athletic director) and then at Harvard University. During that time, “Coach” ran a popular wrestling program at the old Boston YMCU (the “Boston Union”), where he trained scores of elite wrestlers. Jim also ran a wrestling camp for many years, where selected wrestlers were given the opportunity to “earn the right to win” by learning technique and toughness from the legend.

On the international level, Peckham was one of the pioneers who built the United States into a world power in international wrestling. Jim was a USA wrestling coach for 38 major international competitions, serving as head coach for the 1976 Olympic team and assistant coach for the 1972 Olympic team.

There was nobody quite like Jim Peckham! He was one of those old-school guys in the sport of wrestling who seemed to be around since wrestling began in the ancient Olympics. Underneath his genteel exterior, Jim was tough – really tough – not just physically, but also mentally. He was decades ahead of his time with training techniques, embracing cross-training in the 1950s. Peckham was always running, biking, swimming, lifting, rope climbing, and wrestling. He was a devoted vegetarian who abstained from alcohol.

Although he did not attend college, Coach Peckham was a lifelong learner. His knowledge of ancient Greek and Roman history was magnificent. Jim’s expertise in agriculture was impressive; he was especially proud of his extensive gardens and orchards. During his lifetime, Coach stayed abreast of developments in kinesiology, biochemistry, and nutrition. Jim had a wealth of knowledge in many subjects, and he was a renowned story-teller, lighting up a room with conversation, and always making you think.

In 1998, Coach Peckham founded the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Guided by his example, the Massachusetts Chapter continues to pursue its mission of preserving our wrestling history, recognizing our excellence, and inspiring future generations of wrestlers. In 2000, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Oklahoma recognized Jim Peckham’s many accomplishments as a competitor, coach, administrator, and official by inducting him as a Distinguished Member.

James Peckham truly made a difference to wrestling, his family, and his friends. Jim loved his wife Jean, his family, his garden, his many friends, and wrestling… and he lived his life with passion. In 2011, the James Peckham Earning the Right Scholarship Fund was established to perpetuate Coach Peckham’s legacy by supporting Massachusetts high school wrestlers with strong character who intend to wrestle in college.

Franklin Randolph1990, 91, 92, 94, 98, 99 & 2000 Division II State Champions 1991 Division I State Champions

The 1991 State Championship team from Randolph High was an awesome JV team. The majority of them were back-ups for two years behind the great 1989-1990 teams, and now no longer had to wear the blue Grover uniforms. With only 4 seniors in the starting lineup, they were a young, inexperienced team with a lot of heart and fight.

Our seniors were Matt Kagan, Dave Goldman, Eric Quashie, and Jim Cassidy. Our 8 juniors and 1 freshman were all new to the lineup and helped us wrestle to an 18-3 dual meet record during the season and upset powerhouse Weymouth at the Sectional tournament. Asst. Coaches Brian Mills and John Jenkins provided the on the mat technique to propel the team to next level. Coach Jenkins brought from NY an old move with a new name, “Bulldog,” that caught a lot of wrestlers and teams by surprise.

To The National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Massachusetts Chapter, Franklin High would like to thank you for inducting our program as the Team of The 90s. Being recognized is a great honor. We are proud of what we have accomplished throughout the years. I have been fortunate to be a part of this success, not only as a coach but as an alumni. I feel that this is a tribute for all of the Athletes who have strapped on a Franklin Singlet. Our program started in the Mid 70s. Since then, Franklin has won 10 State Titles and has been a runner up 5 times. Franklin has won titles in Division 2 and in Division 1. Not many Team have been able to win in multiple divisions. During the 90s, 1989-1990 through 1999-2000, Franklin won 7 State Titles and was a runner-up twice. Individually, here is a list of our accomplishments:

Coach Mills instilled the physical & mental toughness needed to be a champion.

At the State Championships in Springfield, 10 of our 12 wrestlers won their 1st round match, and the majority picked up 2-3 wins. Rob Dwyer gave us the leadership needed to win the title, as did Jim Cassidy, whose ear blew up at the State Tournament. Jim fought his way through it to the placement round for the team and forfeited down to 6th place. Coaches couldn’t believe we let him forfeit down with the State Title on the line. Jim was a big part of why we won that day. McArthur Daley, our heavyweight, placed 5th. Matt Kagan placed 2nd at 112 (and 2nd at New Englands). Dave Goldman placed 1st at 125. Eric Quashie placed 4th at 130. Before the finals round, Randolph and Agawam both had 2 wrestlers in the finals with Agawam holding a half-point lead. We won 1, they lost 2; we won by 3.5 points.

97 SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS 35 STATE CHAMPIONS 19 STATE RUNNER-UPS 31 NEW ENGLAND PLACE WINNERS 8 NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONS 19 ALL AMERICANS

We are hoping that all of our Alumni will be a part of this celebration. Sort of a reunion for all of Franklin Wrestling. We also would like to recognize and congratulate the other Inductees, Teams and Individuals. I have always said that there is nothing but good people in the sport of wrestling, so true.

Regards, Carmine Colace

Every member of this team will not only become a better “Wrestler,” but will become a better “Young Man.” They will have established a strong work ethic that will benefit them the rest of their lives.”

A GATHERING OF SCORES OF WRESTLERS, COACHES, OFFICIALS AND SUPPORTERS ORGANIZED BY JIM PECKHAM WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE MASSACHUSETTS CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME.

The gathering at Jacob Wirth’s Restaurant on Stuart St. in Boston in January of 1998 provided the impetus needed for Jim Peckham to organize an association of devoted wrestling aficionados which would preserve history, recognize excellence and inspire generations. Jacob Wirth’s was a few steps from the iconic Young Men’s Christian Union where many of these men trained and competed.

Jim Peckham spearheaded the formation of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on May 20, 1998 at Ye Olde Union Oyster House in Boston. Jim gathered together the good men of wrestling in Massachusetts to recognize athletic dedication and achievement and to enjoy an evening of camaraderie and fellowship. An organization was soon put into place with a group of officers and a mission statement for the future of the association. The initial organizational meetings were all held at Jim Peckham’s home in Weymouth.

Jim found a receptive audience for his vision of a Massachusetts Chapter in Carl Adams, Rick Sullivan, Warren Farrell, Steve Biondolillo, Ted Neill and Mike Testa. George Bossi, Tom Bartosek, Bobby Morrison, Alex Steinbergh, Myron Allukian, Dave Breen and Phil Grebinar were also instrumental in forming the chapter.

The inaugural Massachusetts Chapter Banquet was held on April 10, 1999 at the Hilton Hotel in Dedham. That night over 230 wrestlers, coaches, family members and guests attended an elegant dinner and awards ceremony. Keynote speaker Bruce Baumgartner, the Olympic and World Champion said that “it was the best state chapter Hall of Fame awards ceremony that he had ever attended.”

Mike Testa organized the first five very successful banquets for the organization. Testa set the groundwork for the future of the chapter. The financial support for the Chapter was generously provided by Alex Steinbergh, Warren Farrell and Steve Biondolillo.

Beginning in 2007, Bob Rudolph and Tom Bartosek organized the first of three gala events at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. Patriots Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett, Olympian Bobby Douglas, National Wrestling Hall of Fame President Lee Roy Smith and Harvard National Champion JP O’Connor were guests at these highly successful induction ceremonies. The 2009 banquet, a huge financial success, brought in a record breaking crowd of 460 guests to the magnificent Fidelity

Massachusetts Chapter of theNATIONAL WRESTLING HALL OF FAME

Suites at Gillette Stadium. The Massachusetts Chapter was firmly established and recognized as one of the best chapters in the country.

In 2011, Mike Stuer and Stephen Henry skillfully took the reins of the vitally important Banquet Committee. The Framingham Sheraton Tara became the host of the annual banquet from 2012 until 2015. Over these years the Massachusetts Chapter instituted numerous innovative programs and brought financial stability to this growing concern by continuing to organize extremely successful banquets. A spring event was organized by Stephen Henry and Mike Stuer to honor the achievement at the youth, high school and the college wrestlers and coaches.

Over the past decade, the great work of the Massachusetts Chapter has been acknowledged by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for its dedication and innovation. In addition, many prominent wrestling dignitaries have recognized the professionally organized banquets, the exceptionally beautiful program booklets as well as the many new programs which the Chapter has instituted to promote wrestling in Massachusetts.

In 2016, Sean Harrington and Matt Quimby took over the leadership of the Massachusetts Chapter. A bright future is in store for this thriving organization as it continues to fulfill its stated mission.

The Massachusetts Chapter has celebrated the achievement of many outstanding individuals at its annual Banquet and Induction Ceremony. The Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Chapter takes great pride in promoting and strengthening wrestling in Massachusetts and inspiring future generations of young men and women to learn from our great sport of wrestling.

Jim Peckham’s idea of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame was transformed from a mere vision into a vibrant and impactful organization before he died. Jim was especially proud of the dedication and hard work of the Board of Directors and the exceptional work of the Massachusetts Chapter in promoting wrestling in our Commonwealth. More than anything else however, Jim was pleased that he was able to gather the good men of wrestling together in order to renew acquaintances and celebrate the friendships and competition brought about by the magnificent sport of wrestling.
