This issue of Street Gasser is a bit likea Geography lesson as we drop intoAustralia, California, Stratford Upon

Avon and even manage to visit Lands End.So settle down now, put your books away, sit up straight as we begin with a quick bitof Social Science or for the highlyeducated amongst you Psychology.

There are quite a few activities that weall do automatically, everyday, withouteven realizing it. Breathing and blinkingbeing just two of them, however, oneactivity that influences not only ourworking but also our personal lives is bodylanguage. The subconscious reading ofhow others react with us as we interactwith them. This skill has been aroundsince life began, and like me, you can letpeople around you know exactly how youfeel without uttering a single word. Youwill know if I am joking, threatening, angry, happy and a whole myriad of otheremotions, with not one word passing mylips.

Even the experts agree how vital bodylanguage is as they have concluded thatcommunication between humans consistsof 93% body language and just 7% verbal. Imagine if you take away the bodylanguage element from ourcommunication, it doesn’t leave verymuch for us as humans to work with. Aperson who is sight impaired is thereforeat a great disadvantage when compared toa person with normal vision; however theirsenses make adjustments to assist incontrolling this void. So I wonder why it isthat the rest of us fail to make any suchadjustments when we work without 93%of our communication skills, when we text, use Facebook or more importantly for thiseditorial, post on Forums!

Experts have also concluded that the7% left over for verbal communication isfurther reduced to just 2% when thewritten word is used! No wonder so manyproblems seem to arise on forums, andjust how quickly these can involve morethan one person. With sides being taken, the situation rapidly escalates, with theoutcome leaving those directly involvedand even those just reading the thread

mentally battered and bruised with evenLOL failing to save the day.

I’m all for technology, but perhaps wecan all learn a lesson from this particularsituation and that is you still cannotreplace good manners, common sense &decency. I am a very open andopinionated person, but I wouldn’t postsomething on a forum that I knew wouldcause, or was likely to cause offence. Asmy Grandfather used to tell me ‘Goodmanners costs you nothing’. So in thewords of Hill Street Blues, ‘be careful outthere’.

Now for something completelydifferent, It’s ‘hallo’ from him andgoodbye from ‘her’ as there has been aslight shuffle on the Committee withNatalie Laugher stepping down from theMerchandise role and Danny Slatterreplacing her. So thank you to both ofthem for what they have already done andwhat they will do for the club in thefuture. Danny has some great ideas sowatch this space over the coming months.

Another slight change is that GrahamRennie of American Auto Mags (01606888324) has generously donated avoucher worth £25 which can beredeemed at his fine establishment. Thiswill be awarded in each issue so if youknow of any good deeds or worthyrecipients please let me know. To get theball rolling the voucher this issue goes toAndy Cripps, perhaps a few books willhelp him along the path to recovery andhelp pass the hours of treatment.

I hope you all enjoy this issue and abig thank you to all of you who have sentin articles & Dom of Modernpics.co.uk forhis excellent photography.

Until the next time, Nervous Nick

Having returned to the hotel afterhaving a few drinks, Merv wantedto head off out into the night to the

Hot Rod party we had all been invited to.Many of the weary souls did not want

to come out to play, so just 6 of us headedout into the night to locate the host venue,Squeaks. This turned out to be across theroad from Kiwi Konnection and in themiddle of a residential area!

This was a thriving Hot Rod business, which was having an open house event. Aswe pulled up we knew we were in the rightplace as 3 all steel Rods were lined upoutside, and the glow from within theworkshop illuminated not only thesurrounding area but fell upon severalother party goer's rides.

We were soon all clambering out of the‘battle cruiser’ and like moths to a flamelured towards the light.

Peering into the workshop we weregreeted by a 40’s Ford which was part waythrough a rebuild. Sat on top a four postlift was a Caddy and up in the rafters oureyes were soon drawn to various bodiesand panels.

It was quite a sight, the sort ofworkshop most of us would aspire to own.Around the outside of the workshop wasall manner of speed equipment and what

appeared to be tons of memorabilia. Thissoon had me wondering just how muchspace I had in my suitcase!

Not that much as it turns out as mycollection of T- shirts was once againgrowing, much like my admiration for howthe Americans throw a party; with an opendoor policy and the only stipulation beingyou bring along your own booze! Not keenon sharing then?

Further inside the workshop wasanother surprise in the shape of a clubhouse, complete with walls covered in allmanner of memorabilia and images from atime gone by. This is where I unfortunatelydid little to foster East-West relations as Isought to engage a Rodder in conversationonly to discover he didn’t speak Englishand very quickly found myself regrettablytaking on that ludicrous mantle of; if theydon’t understand what you are saying, then shouting it will certainly help, Not!Hand gestures soon replaced my voice andI finally understood that he had ridden apushbike to America from Botswana!

With only about 30 people tops at theparty, the UK visitors were soon all outsideexploring the various outbuildings; here wecame across several other vehicles, themost fascinating of which appeared to bea Model A with a wind cheating chop andon closer inspection revealed a salt flatracing heritage. The old Ford lookedwicked, secreted away as it was in agloomy garage. The old racer had as youwould expect a period perfect interior. The seat appeared to testify that any driverwho got this baby upto speed on the saltdefinitely had big cahooners, becausesafety devices were minimal on thisparticular ride, with a hoop and harness t

both appearing modern additions to theSpartan surroundings! One could onlyimagine what the cacophony of noise waslike inside this particular salt racer as itsurged across the white stuff, awesome, truly awesome!

Sat alongside the old racer wasanother wind cheater but this time straightfrom the factory, the Studebaker Factory. This car covered in a deep layer of dust, orwas it salt? Either way it looked atreasured car, possibly waiting it's turn on

the four post lift? The music was still going but we were

all feeling the effects of a long day, sosoon trudged over to the battle Bus andheaded off to the Hotel, some for a nightcap but all for a good night’s sleep.

With a certain amount of sadness thefinal day at the Hot Rod Reunion hadarrived. We were all determined to makethe most of it and as I had spent so muchtime in the stands, I decided I would touras much of the pits as I could.

It is common knowledge that I have aparticular weakness and love of Gassers. So it should be no surprise that I set outto hunt down as many of this fine form ofdrag machinery as I could. However alongthe way I came across some equallyabsorbing dragsters, in the form of frontengine rails.

The exotica amongst the various rigswas quite outstanding and to try and

convey on these pages just howoverwhelming the sights and sounds wereis frankly difficult, but I hope the imagesof my voyage of discovery at least give youall a glimpse into that world.

A recent addition to the track is theGarages that house several Gassers, and inthat early morning sunshine that onlyCalifornia can conjure up, several of thegassers sat out front. They almost

appeared to be like cold blooded reptilesthat needed to sun themselves in order towarm the blood before they could get onwith the day. Or in this case before theyfired into action ready for another assaulton the quarter mile!

Sweeping across from the garages wasthe start of the pits, and sat just outsidewas the 32 Ford utilised as the promovehicle for Dynamat: the ‘Dynaliner’. Thishas a fine patina, creating the look of anold time rod when in fact it is no morethan a few years old. A job well executedin my opinion.

Also running under the DynamatBanner was a selection of front enginedragsters that possibly look better nowthan when they ran in the 70’s and 80’s.

I wandered lonely as a cloud and cameacross all manner of heavenly treats, butthe ones to get my pulse racing were aspreviously mentioned the Gassers, nonemore so than the immaculately restoredTexeria Willys and the contrast in looks, but not in the amount of effort, that hadgone into the Barn Find Willys of BillFowler. Different strokes for different folksbut equally on my Lottery list!

As the trailers started to appear andthe awnings came down, so did thecurtain on another fine trip to the orangegroves just outside Bakersfield, so I willalso make my exit and leave you with afew more images from the Hot RodReunion. ■

Things have progressed albeit a slowly(life and work get in the way), thechassis strengthening is finished

with just the servo mount to weld in and afew minor brackets to sort out. It wasgiven a few coats of red oxide to protect ituntil it is ready for primer and topcoat.

The new chassis members were cutfrom 50mm X 50mm box section steeland small cross members cut from 50 X30 mm box section steel. Stewart Revillcame over for the weekend, now althoughI can competently weld bodywork, brackets etc, when it comes to chassiswelding then I want the job doing rightafter all safety is a major considerationwith any project.

Stewart came up with the idea ofteaching Lisa to weld so after a quick ten-minute lesson she proceeded to finish thetop side of the welds. Considering the factthat she had never used a mig before theresults were amazing, and after her thirdattempt she was laying down some perfectwelds.

There are still a few jobs remaining onthe chassis, getting the fuel tank madeand mounted, exhaust mounts, handbrakecable brackets, but these will be done asand when the parts are acquired.

Over the Christmas holidays I had beenin touch with Andy Whithorn who agreedto change the stud pattern on the fronthubs and the back axle, this was to beproving a challenge for him and myself asthe flanges on the rear half shafts justweren’t big enough to take the new studpattern. I eventually found just the thingvia the internet, an adapter that changesfour stud to five stud for Audi and BMW’sSo the idea was put forward to Andy andbetween us we came up with the requireddesign.

Yes I know I could have changed theaxle but it would mean a lot more workand expense. (Unless someone has acheap complete 8 inch Ford back axlegoing spare). The adapter is made up oftwo parts and bolts to the half shaft andadds an extra 4 inches to the overallwidth, which meant the rear arches willhave to be widened by ½ inch each side.

Andy still has the design if any body needssome and his workmanship is top class. So I have to say a very big “thanks” toAndy for persevering with them.

With the major chassis work completedand whilst waiting for parts to arrive, westarted to tackle the bodywork. Even ourdaughter Megan got involved (A truefamily project).

When the Fordson first arrived andLisa tried the driving position it becameclear that there would be problems withside vision through the doors especially atroad junctions.

It was decided to lengthen the doors,

this had been done before on a rathertasty Black Fordson built by Dave Haskill afew years ago and involved shortening asaloon door by four inches.

After a chat with Derek Gibson it wasdecided that it was a lot of work and theend result would not really be thatnoticeable, so a set of steel saloon doorswere purchased acquired at the 2008 HotRod Drags for the princely sum of £ 30 apair (a bargain) and although the requiredsome work to the bottoms they werecomplete with all the internal door fixings, glass, winder mechanism’s and locks.

Fixing the doors to the body showed upjust how much of a major task this wouldbe as the body is a completely differentshape to a saloon, with 9 inches having tobe removed out of the side panels and thedoor opening needing to be remade to fitthe door shape. The gutter, roof and doorsurround inner panels would also need tobe reworked to suit the door curvature. Soarmed with a grinder and hacksaw bladethe side panel was marked up and the “B”

post and 9 inches cut out. Once the dusthad settled and the door checked in thenew opening.

There followed a lot of adjusting andreworking to getting the door to sit right inthe opening but eventually it was achievedand the “B” post re-glassed in place and anew inner sill made where the openinghad been cut out. Once the doors wereadjusted and altered to fit the frontopening the top door jambs were made upusing heavy duty fibreglass matting andresin.

The door hinge mountings and strikerplates will be tied into the roll cage toensure rigidity and strength.

The roll cage will be mounted to thebrackets that have been welded onto thechassis and will run from the footwells upand over the door openings to the centreloop behind the seats with a cross piecesacross the front screen, the centre of theside panels giving it a six point fixing tothe chassis which should help with bodyrigidity.

The complete front panels (wings, inner wings were originally fibreglass) havebeen replaced with steel items andalthough they will require some work theywere very cost effective. (read cheap)

The main body is a Pro Laminates itemand the moulding is very good but doesrequire a lot of work to get it perfectlystraight. (Or am I being too picky)

The only major problem area has beenthe rear doors fitting and alignment. Theyjust would not sit level with the body work.

So they were split and the panel pulledout to try and get them to line up, but nomatter which way I pulled them they stillwouldn’t sit right. Three full weekendswere spent on each door, making newmouldings and louvres, but they now lineup and sit flush with the surroundingbodywork.

Although never seen the amount oftime and patience spent getting this stageright, will pay off when it comes time topaint the body.

New door bottoms from Pop Brownswill be welded to the originals to completethe repairs. Hopefully by the onset ofwinter the bodywork will be finished andready for primer. It might seem thatprogress is a bit haphazard and notfollowing a normal pattern, ie;chassis, engine, bodywork etc, but ratherthan wait for parts to arrive as funds allow,I would rather carry on with what I haveand hopefully get that out of the way fornow.

We will catch up with this familyproject in 2010. ■

With my Gasser still not fighting fit,the Hot Rod Drags at ShakespeareCounty Raceway became a day

trip for me. No sooner had I negotiated‘Pot Hole Alley’ than I spotted a fantasticsight. A steel 5 window coup of 1934

vintage, you want patina, we got patina, you want slicks, we got slicks, you wantoriginal Halibrands, we got originalHalibrands, you want a blown Hemi, wegot a blown Hemi, you want fenders, wellyou’re in the wrong place buddy!

I suddenly realised where I had seenthis wicked looking motor before, and itwas in the Bristol workshop of MervBarnett, so this had to be Carl Frith’slatest creation.

I quickly parked and had a good lookround the finished (?) Rod, the pictures

don’t do it justice, it oozes Nostalgia &Quality. With so much thought, money, time and skill invested in the 34, you maybe pleasantly surprised to know that inkeeping with the ethos of being a BristolStreet Rodder, Carl had not only driven itall the way from Bristol, but had alsohammered it up the track throughoutSaturday. The one thing the BristolRodders do is drive their Rods and drivethem hard! In fact he had put so manyquarter miles on it, that he now had amajor problem with the clutch, namely t

that it was virtually gone!It was also rumoured around the pits

that he had run his last quarter mile withthe line lock still engaged!

The 34 was certainly grabbing a lot ofattention, but sat just behind it was anequally impressive ride, still from the Fordproduction line with only a mere 7 yearsbetween the two Rods was Bartley Wren’s41 pick up. Looking like it had sunk inthe grass, meant that this 41 was riding,or more likely, sitting on air.

Sat just in front of both of these waspossibly the future of Rodding in thiscountry, with Preston and his Bugattiinfluenced Tot Rod. Man I wish I was thatcool at that age, in fact I wish I was thatcool at any age!

It took me and my daughter Patsy overan hour to reach the track,(no not becauseof my lack of direction) but there was somuch to see and so many people to talk toalong the way, including a neat "created inthe 70’s, reborn in the new millennium"pop.

Once in the stands we were treated tosome good racing, oil downs, andunfortunately at times a barren fire uplane. I am never quite sure what causesthis phenomenon at the Nostalgia Drags, but at times it appears no one wants torun their car. Unlike the Hot Rod Dragswhich is always rammed with cars waitingto trip the timing beams. In fact so manywant to run at that event, the fire up roadqueue stretches back up to and throughthe pits. Some seem to think this isbecause it's mid season and no one wantsto break their motor, I’m not convinced Bartley & Carl that well known double act

but whatever it is, perhaps this is worthbearing in mind for next year's NostalgiaDrags, because some of the club membersattending got in 10 – 15 runs on each day. That number of runs at the NostalgiaNationals would be very unlikely.

The gaps in the fire up road were oftenfilled with the a fine supporting cast, withgreat entertainment being provided by theWild Bunch, Outlaw Flat Fours and theever popular Outlaw Anglias. I got reallyexcited part way through the day when I

spotted the Nostalgia Funny Car of WendyBaker preparing to run, but unfortunatelythe flopper appeared to lose fire after itsburnout. Despite this it looked wicked anda credit to all the team that work so hardon it. t

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING22nd NOVEMBER 2009

This year the AGM is being held on22nd November 2009 at the HolidayInn Northampton West, starting at

11.00am. The hotel is close to the M1,so should be easily accessible for mostmembers.

We have two important subjects wewould like you to consider prior to themeeting. Firstly, we have amended theConstitution and you will find enclosedwith this edition, a copy of theConstitution with the changes/additionsmarked in red. As you will see, the mainareas of change relate to ‘rolling

membership’. We have also madechanges to include the website/forum, toupdate the monetary values, Committeenominations to be made in writing and toinclude the number of cheque signatories’required for the Association’s bankaccounts. At the AGM we will be askingyou to vote on accepting this revisedConstitution.

The second important issue we wouldlike you to consider is changing theAssociation to a ‘Limited by Guarantee’Company. This would make theAssociation a Company limited to the

value for its assets only. There are noshares and no distribution of profit. Themain reason for this is that at presentshould the Association become insolvent;the officers (your committee) couldbecome financially liable. Should bothproposals be accepted by the membershipat the AGM, by accepting the ‘limited byassets’ option, you would also beaccepting a further amendment to theConstitution to incorporate this significantchange.

Please note that due to the copy date forthe Street Gasser being brought forward bytwo weeks, not all current committeenominations have been received due toholidays and other commitments.

Members wishing to stand for anycommittee position should forward theirnomination, with the names andmembership numbers of the members whoare Proposing and Seconding theirnomination, to the Secretary before Friday23rd October 2009.

After taking my rod to Cornwall a fewyears ago for the pre 49 weekendand knowing what a good time was

had, the Surf Coast Cruisers St Ivesweekender seemed too good to miss. Weknew we would be staying in a pre bookedchalet so no camping gear was neededwith the site backing straight onto thebeach and with two pubs and an indoorswimming pool, what more could anyonewant? The Friday trip down from Bristolwas pleasant with a dinner break taken atLanhydrock house a National trustproperty well worth a visit, and just off ofthe A30 at Bodmin.

The site at St Ives is huge withChalets, Caravans, Wood Lodges and vastcamping areas covering the land for as faras you could see .The beach must rate as

one of the best in Cornwall as it stretchesfor miles and miles with unblemishedsand and a sea to die for !

Once settled into our chalet a lookaround the cars was undertaken, talking tonew and old friends and even partakinginto a little light refreshment now andagain! The night was taken up drinking inone of the sites pubs and enjoying the endof England hospitality.

Saturday saw a cruise to Lands endtaking in St Ives main street ( A sight forsore eyes on a holiday weekend) and astop at a tin mine for a breather. It didrain for a short while but whenever I dothis northern route it always rains. At‘Lands End’ we had dinner, then after thiswe made our way through

Penzance onto Marazion and parkingup with a splendid view of Saint MichaelsMount .

Sunday saw us doing another cruiseaided by a route pointing out views andgiving us a history as we drove .Our

objective was Truro where our hosts hadarranged with the local council to park upon the main Piazza where we could hold asmall show.

The organizers had thought out the

whole weekend well, with free pastySaturday night, free entrance into LandsEnd, and cheap camping fees. I thinkmore people should attend theseweekenders’s and see for themselves how

hard individuals work to promote ourhobby.

By Neil Brown

Iguess this all started fifteen years agowhen my sister moved to Adelaide,Australia, and married an Ozzie. (no my

sister isn’t called Sharon) My wife and Iwent out for the wedding, (no not Muriel’s)but before we went, I read a letter in‘Street Rodder’ magazine from a guy inAdelaide asking for info, and his addresswas printed in the mag. So, not wanting tomiss out on some possible car action, Iwrote (no email back then) to GrahamBilsborow, asking about the car scene inAdelaide.

Well, he did us proud, and we endedup spending a day with him, his wifeLinda and then only son Tom. Runningaround in Grahams 38 Ford Coupe up inthe Adelaide hills on a Road Knights Clubpoker run, which ended in a Barbie in theGerman town of Hahndorf. It was a greatday, and the memories last to this day.Unfortunately over the years I lost contactwith Graham.

Fifteen years on and at the very lastminute I decided to visit my sister again.I browsed the net, found the AustralianStreet Rod Federation and a list of clubswhich contained details for Robert Riggs. This time there was an email address, so Ipressed the send button, and Robert gotback to me.

He said that as I was going out lateMay, early June, and it would be theirwinter, I would be missing their last bigcruise of the year. However, he would tryand sort something out for me, and tophone him when I got to Adelaide. I alsomentioned in an email that I met Grahamon my last trip, and it turned out that he isa very good friend of Roberts. Smallworld!.

Well, it was a long flight, did I mentionit was a long flight, but it was great to seemy sister, her partner and two kids. After abit of ‘settling in’ I phoned Robert, and hewas great. He arranged for me to go roundto Len Vodic, a local Rodder the nextevening, and check the Stude powered ACoupe that he was building as well as hiscustom Chevy that was a fordor, then aconvertible and now it is a custom Tudor.

Len added a roof from a later car, while chopping it of course, nosed anddecked and slammed it and added custom

tail lights. He is also a great artist, havingdone artwork for the Road Knights club,Street Rod event promotions artwork, andmade his own outdoor projector and glassslides to project on buildings aroundAdelaide. A clever and very friendly guy.Unfortunately, my camera battery was flat,so I borrowed my sisters camera, whichafter 2 photos, gave up on me! I would

have loved to have taken some pics of hisoils on canvas in his lounge, or his sled, but them’s the breaks!

On the way home Robert said he wastrying to arrange something for theweekend, maybe take in the car toy fair inAdelaide on the Sunday, and then visit acouple of local Rodders.

Later that week, details were finalised, and Graham was going to pick me upSunday morning in his 61 BubbletopBelair with his youngest son, Michael, head back to his place for coffee and acatch up, then we would go to the toy fair, where Robert would meet me, and takeme to meet a couple of rodders. Soundedgreat!.

Sunday morning came, and Grahamknocked at my Sisters door nice and early. It was good to see him again and I’dforgotten what a nice guy he is. We alljumped into his Belair, and headed backto his place for coffee and a ‘shed’moment.

Now, at this point I should explain. Ashed in Australia isn’t a 6x4 wooden boxin the corner of the garden with thelawnmower and garden tools throwninside, no, it’s a huge building where menbuild cars. In Graham’s case, a four cargarage with a post lift in one bay, and anoffice/model shop in the end bay. His carcollection had grown somewhat since Ilast saw him. There, on the ramp was the38 coupe, on the tailside of a rebuild.Under the ramp was a big block powered32 Roadster that Graham had knocked upfor some fun, and next to the model shopwas a 34 5 window coupe awaitingattention to become a traditional rod. t

It’s worth mentioning here thatAustralia has some very strict restrictionson cars, especially home builds, but theseguys still build great cars. Worthremembering for the future in the U.K

After a coffee and a chat with themisses (thanks Linda) and seeing Grahamsoldest son Tom, who is now taller than me(he was a little grommet when I was lasthim, that’s what fifteen years of sunshinedoes.) it was off to the Toy Fair. Cruisingalong the streets in Grahams Belair, windows down with some rock n rollplaying on the stereo was pretty cool.

The Toy Fair was great, we wanderedaround for a bit, I bought myself anothertoy for my cupboard, but Graham had totake Michael to Aussie rules Footballpractice, so we stopped by for a chat withJason at the Parts Box,(http://www.thepartsbox.com/) who is avery friendly guy. Jason prototypes, moulds

and supplies parts to build 1/25th scalemodels, say a Lincoln flathead V12 forinstance or complete kits, such as hisreally cool traditional T. I spent a goodhour talking to Jason, then realised Robertwas waiting for me in the car park! Ithanked Jason and went off to find Robert.

When I got outside, there was Robertand his wife Kerry in his 46 Chevy Coupe. In we jumped, and off we headed into the

Adelaide hills. The Scenery up there isbeautiful and it could have easily beenEngland apart from all the Eucalyptustrees, and signs warning of Koalas!! I wastold that it’s nothing like this in thesummer months as everything is dry andbrown. We stopped for lunch at theAldgate Hotel , and I had the bestsausages I think I’ve ever had, boy, was Ifull. Then we set off again, towards

The 38 coupe, going V6 powered cos Graham couldn’t get the old hi-po 351 to run right on pump gas!

Under the ramp, the 32 Roadster

Waiting in the corner, the 5 window 34, good patina, Mate!

Meadows, which is where Pete Laxtonlives. As we were driving through thecountry roads, it struck me how generousall these guys were. Based on a couple ofemails, these people had given up a goodportion of there day to run someone thatthey’d never met before all over Adelaideto do car stuff! After a slightly longerjourney than planned due to a closed road(they close public roads to do ‘timedsections’ in various rallies, apparentlyAdelaide is well known for it with its worldrenowned Classic Adelaide ) we arrived atPete’s place.

Yes, Pete’s place, there’s a lot of spacein the Adelaide hills, Pete has 20 Acres ofit.

We were greeted by his two Alsatians, his wife Robyn, and two other rodders,Graham Arthy and Ian Franklin. After acasual introduction, we walked towardsthe shed. This particular shed iscavernous. Well, Pete has the space, andhe thought ‘why not’! There has to beenough room for 20 cars, tho Petecurrently has three, a 39 coupe, 40Deluxe Delivery, and his wifes NotchbackMustang.

The Coupe and Delivery are old streetrods with a lot of history. The Coupe hasbeen in Australia since the 70’s, andalways as a rod. Pete had always liked it,but it was never for sale, until one day theowner decided to move it on and gavePete first refusal, and that was that.Powered by a 351, this car is gorgeous, stock ‘wood grain’ dash, maroon leather

interior, and I sits so right. The Delivery is also an old rod, having

done push car duty at Bonneville, it wasimported to Australia, and found its way toPete.

Outside was Ian’s 34 roadster, justfinished and built to Oz street rodconstruction regs, it’s a very nice car.Behind that was my taxi for the day,Roberts Chevy.

Pete offered a beer. Who am I to turndown such hospitality, so we went to his

‘office’. I need one of these. Against themain wall is a huge toy cabinet, full ofmodels Pete has made, and die castmodels. A lot of 40’s in there, but a lot ofother cool stuff as well.

We spent a couple of hours chatting, and Robert reminded me that we still hadone more stop, and if we were to make it,we best leave soon. So saying our goodbuys, we headed off, back towardsAdelaide and the street rod shop of KeithHunter. t

Keith knew we were coming, and hadstayed on late to see us. When we arrivedKeith was very welcoming and I felt like Iwas dropping in to an old buddies shop. Atthe front of the shop sat Keith’s personalride, a 34 Coupe. Running onindependent suspension all round, andloads of little one off doo-dads like milledrocker covers, and rad shroud, this car isgonna be really nice when it’s done (goingfor paint at the last report). Behind thiswas a 34 Sedan, a glass car, Keith had toreprofile the roof to make it look right. This car sits really nice, hard to capturewith my auto digi camera, but it’s gonnalook great. There was also a Steel A Sedanbeing worked on, tho judging buy the‘hood ornament, it may be waiting for‘customer input’.

It was really good to meet Keith, areally nice guy. We left Keiths and headedback to Roberts place, to drop off theChevy, and pickup his 65 Thunderbird forthe trip home.

In Australia, if you have a ‘classic’ car,you can run a special registration thatlimits you to the amount of times you usethe car a year, and before you take it out,you are supposed to enter the date andtime of your journey into a diary for thecar. That way, if you are stopped, youhave proof of registration for the day Big

fines for not filling in your book! RobertsT-bird is registered this way, and he filledout his diary before we left for the 30minute journey back to my sisters. I feltpretty honoured that he used one of histrips to run me home, but then he saidthat he has way more days than he canuse in a year anyway!

The T Bird is a sweet car, having beencompletely gone through by the previousowner, I’d call it fully restored, Robert saidit is a nice car! A very different ride to hiscoupe, a real flash back to the 60’s withthe interior design. We cruised back thelong way, thru Glenelg, and along thecoast. We stopped at a gas station for…photo’s of course, Again, my great camerahasn’t done the car justice.

I can’t thank Robert enough formaking my trip so memorable (apart frommeeting my two nieces for the first time!!)From a couple of emails from someonehe’d never met before, he went out of hisway to organise a good car day for me, andall the guys were very welcoming. It’sweird how cars somehow bring peopletogether.

Here’s looking forward to 2024!!! ■

Nervous Nick

Well like most rodders as far backas I can remember I wasinterested in cars, I don’t know

where I got it from as no one in my familywas a gear head.

Although I was aware of “custom cars”at the time, I know more or less the exactdate I got hooked…

December 1978, a mate of mineJimmy had a paper round and used to“borrow” the occasional magazine fromthe paper shop. This particular day hebrought home January 1979 Custom Car,more than likely miss led by a certain ladyon the front cover.

After seeing this and being strangelydrawn in I went out and bought that copyalong with just about every otherpublication available. From that day on Icouldn’t wait for the next magazine andremember cycling for miles to get CC, Hotcar, Hot Rod & Custom UK and any of theAmerican mags.

At the age of 17 I got my first car MK2 Cortina I went through a whole string ofthese until I turned 18 and bought myfirst Morris Minor a ex Police 2 door for£50.00 the previous owner kept greyhounds in it and it stunk! First job ongetting it home was to take all thewindows out and let it vent for a week, with the windows out it seemed rude notto carry on and chop the roof this wasdone on my parents drive way by me andvarious different mates who came andwent through out the day. Chopping bycommittee was interesting but we gotthere in the end and this proved to be thefirst of many chops and complaints fromthe neighbours…

Fast forward to 1998 I had beenthrough lots of cars 5 Minors all choppedand one sectioned various Anglia’sConsuls a 27 on a A chassis that I shippedin from the states and a whole host of VWsagain some chopped some not. At thistime I had a MK1 consul and an inprogress chopped 57 Buick.

It was a week before the Supper Natsand I wanted something to take, Id beenoffered a 53 Chrysler a few weeks earlierby a friend who at the time was inAustralia.

A quick call to Aus and the deal wasdone so on the Friday night myself and my

mate Billy went around and collected thecar. Although it was already very nicelychopped it was a non runner with a lot todo and of course no MOT. A week offeverish work saw that by the Thursday itwas done painted and with a MOT but stillonly running on 5 Thursday night wepulled the head to find a stuck vale, aquick beat with a hammer back on with

the head using the same gasket and wewere all set for Friday. Straight after work Iset of and it ran like a clock, arriving atKnebworth Paul Burnham approached meand expressed an interest in purchasingthe car. I agreed a deal as at the time as Ithought punt this and get the money tofinish the Buick so I took a deposit.

Yep great plan…. until later that dayBilly came running up to me all excitedblabbing on about a 32 sedan that hadjust turned up on a transporter, it was forsale and he wanted the fenders but didn’thave the money to buy the whole car, he’dreckoned as Id sold the 53 I could buy thecar sell him the fenders and keep the rest.

We ran across the field to find severalpeople looking at it and dithering about, Iasked the seller how much? He replied£3000. I offered a lower amount he saidno £2900 bottom line… withouthesitation I just said OK.

RADICAL RIDESThe Bare Bones Beater!Before…

…and after!

Page 29: National Street Rod - Hot Rods, Street Rods and Customs · National Street Rod Association Committee 2009 The official journal of the ... to head off out into the night to the Hot

As soon as we had agreed all the otherpeople hanging around started saying “Iwas going to have that” “I was looking atit before you” and all the other normalcrap people come out with when its all tolate.

I put down a deposit exchanged detailsand agreed to go the following week tocollect it, the seller then drove of as he’donly come to the show to sell the car.We walked back over to John Reeds standand John asked about the sedan as he’dseen us looking at it. Now John being thetop bloke he is asked how much? £2900 Isaid... his reply was IV got the cash do youwant to borrow it so you can buy it now?Bugger too late he’s just gone...

The following Wednesday Paul turnedup and collected the 53 so I now had thecash. That Friday I borrowed a recoverytruck of a mate “Bamalamb” he kindlylent me the truck but said he needed it forwork so I could use it between the hoursof 6pm and 8am.

Waiting for the M25 rush to clear myself and Billy set of in the borrowed truckheading for Norwich at about 7pm ofcourse back in the day no sat nav purestupidity and no map and just a set ofdirections taken over the phone scribbledon a old envelope we of course got lostfinally getting to our destination at about10 pm

The 32 belonged to Brian Bignal, nowI didn’t know when I met him the weekbefore but Brian had quite a collection ofmodel As along with at the time a flathead powered truck that was used in thefilm the English patient. When weeventually found his place it was likearriving at the proverbial treasure trove weloaded the 32 on to the truck then spentseveral hours looking around his collectionof cars and parts.

Now gone midnight we set of againheading back towards London... and yeswe got lost… eventually back home I had1 ½ hours sleep got up unloaded and gotthe truck back for 8am as promised. That Saturday I was shattered but sohappy I couldn’t believe that I owned areal steel 32

It’s a Dagenham built 2 door sedanthat was exported to France in 1932hence LHD and the cowl lights, Britishmodels had side lights on the wings. Itcame with the original French paper workshowing that it was a one owner car and

had been last used in 1953. The speedoshows 24000 miles so I do wander if it’s agenuine 1 owner low mileage.

The car had been found in a barn in theSouth of France so nice and warm and norust. I spoke to a couple of French roddersa few years ago that explained the writingon the cowl signified that it had been usedas a delivery vehicle during the war.

The sedan was pushed into the backgarden where it sat for a few monthsbefore being stripped, Billy had thefenders, the engine and box went via JohnReed to Archie Patterson, Jo Painter hadthe gas tank and some other bits a localrestorer bought the wheels and seats. This left me with the body, chassis, hood, pedals and a few other bits all for thegrand sum of £800. I was skint so thisworked well for me.

At the time I was also offered a goodprice on the still unfinished Buick Idecided although it was nearly done to letit go so I could concentrate on the sedan.

Next up I bought a Sierra for £20 this

gave me the engine and box a 8” rear fromClive for £50.00 and then a big chunk ofchange went to John Reed for a 4” dropbeam pearches and other bits along with aset of coil overs for the rear.

I removed the rear cross member andmade my own so the car would sit low andmounted the axle on a 4 bar using a set ofcut down rear wish bones for the lowerlinks so it looked right from the side, upfront I used the dropped axle mounted onthe leaf spring out of Tony Thackers oldorange roadster along with slightly longershackles to get it lower. The front brakesare model B with Mini wheel cylindersoperating on original but relined shoes.

As I sell VW parts for a living sothere’s a fair few used on the car, all thebrake flexis hand brake cables andmaster cylinder are from VW t2 s ofvarious years. The steering box andcolumn are original topped of with a 4spoke bell wheel that I believe is one ofPop Browns, I swapped it with PaulBarrows for a set of wheel flaps. t

Now you don’t come across these too often!

The tear down begins

Unmolested and definitely Unchopped original body

At the time I was very lucky and usedto spend a lot of time in and around LA forwork filling containers with VW parts toship home. My boss always said I couldput in the containers what I wanted solong as I didn’t take the piss. So the 35wires and the Moon tank were both boughtat Pomona long before I had the car, thesewere the good times when billet was kingold Ford and speed parts were consideredjunk $5. a piece for the wheels and $20for the Moon tank with spinner I just wishI had bought more stuff before it all wentstupid…IMAGE: Moon 1

I chucked a pair of Metro seats in witha genuine Mexican blanket over the top(my parents were going on holiday toMexico and made the mistake of asking ifI wanted anything) and trailer it unchopped and un finished to the Nats in99, just to drive it about this worked outwell as it proved the back was to low and Iwould have to raise it up.

Once back home I blew the wholething apart, blasted the chassis and partsthen painted and detailed all the runninggear. With the body of the chassis and noengine in place I contacted the local VROoffice to get it inspected.

The bloke was happy with what he sawhe made 2 comments while he looked at it“ I don’t know how you find the time toput all the effort into restoring a car sonicely” & “ it should really be MOTd if youget it all done in 6 months I wont need tocome back and inspect it again”

As soon as he left back in went thePinto and box back on went the body andout came the hack saw. I chopped the roof31/2” at the front and 3” at the rear.Sorted out wiring glass and probably 100other thing and 2 months later took it for aMOT. I had a problem with front brakebalance so got a fail, boy was I pissed. After a lot of head scratching it turned outto be one of the new Mini cylinderssticking. Quickly sorted and back for aTicket.

Once it was all done I called VRO totell the inspector it was done, he thoughtit was amazing that I had finished and, inhis mind painted and trimmed the car inthat short a time. True to his word heissued a 1932 log book. Thank God

Since then I’ve just driven it...everywhere to work the shops even just outbecause I love it.

I’ve no plans to get rid of it or changeit the Pinto will have to come out as itsmokes a bit and even though my matestake the piss I don’t want a V8 in it I haveto much fun thrashing the little 4 pot thatand of course good gas mileage… ■
