Transcript of our President Mr.J. Prithiviraj welcome speech at the Annual Awards.

Good afternoon everybody.

I am sure all of us here have warmed up nicely for the exciting afternoon ahead.

May I first thank each of you for taking the time out to be present here for the FMSCI Annual Awards, to celebrate our heroes and stars in the year gone by.

I would also like to take this opportunity, on behalf of everybody, to extend a warm welcome to our very special guest, Mr Jean Todt, the President of the FIA and UN special envoy for Road Safety. Welcome you Sir.

This is Mr Todt’s second visit to our Prize Distribution and I am sure he will be delighted to hear about the progress that we have made.

I am happy to see that literally the who’s who of Indian motorsports is here, starting from our National Champions, various promoters, organisers, officials sponsors and manufacturers.

I would, however, like to take the liberty of personally thanking Mr Gautam Singhania, our delegate to the FIA World Motor Sports Council , for being with us.

I am delighted to share with you, Mr Todt, that we have had one of the smoothest elections for the various FMSCI honorary posts a few months ago.

For the first time in recent history, the president and the vice-president were elected unanimously, signalling the start of a new era for Indian motorsports.

It not only underlines that we are a unified force now but also gives us the unique opportunity to take giant steps to make our sport bigger and more beautiful.

I am happy to report that 2018 has been a landmark year for the FMSCI.

We had issued a total of 439 permits in 2018 that’s 1.2 events a day or around 8 events every weekend!

We have had almost all types of motorsporting events like 2w / 4w Race, Rally, sprint, dirt track, supercross, autocross, Cross Country, Drag, karting, endurance and off road.

In 2019 we have added the new disciplines for Rallycross, cross cars and gymkhana. We are ready with the X1 Racing League, the first of its kind league in the Country, perhaps in the World. Like in other Leagues, we will have franchisees owning the teams and top drivers competing for them in what promises to be the biggest innovation in motorsports.

I am proud to say that we have 10 National Championships and many more all-India events in different disciplines, making us the most active national sports body in the country.

We have had 6 international events in India in 2018.

I am also proud to say that 18 of us are in the various FIA Commissions and 6 in FIM. Our B.S. Sujith Kumar is the FIM Asia Vice President and Mr.Anand Sashidharan is the Judicial Director of the FIM.

The good news is that more and more youngsters and kids are taking up the sport, promising a bright future for India as a motorsporting nation.

There is one more thing that we are particularly proud of.

Women in Motorsports.

Yes, our concerted efforts to bring ladies into our fold, make them get involved with motorsports are yielding results.

We not only have many women competing along with the men in some of the events, we also have a number of women-only competitions across the country.

Starting from the Rally to the Valley in Mumbai, the Divas on Wheels in Bengaluru, to the FICCI Power Drive in Delhi, we have seen a massive spurt in their participation.

Last year, in fact, we had the unique Times Women’s Drive too. Ladies from four different cities started at the same time in their own sedans and SUVs and arrived together in Goa for one of the biggest congregations of racing ladies.

We, of course, have an all-women’s team in the LGB Formula 4 national championship, and a handful of exclusive women’s only bike races too. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I would also like to share with you that we are hosting and organising events in not just a few pockets but literally in every part of the country.

Right from the freezing cold of the Himalayas and the bristling heat of the Thar desert in the North, to the glorious hills of Kerala and the coffee gardens of Chikmagalur in the South, to the difficult terrains in Arunachal and Nagaland in the East to the picturesque landscapes of Maharashtra and Goa in the West, we haven’t left any territory unexplored.

Like always, we are thankful to each of the participants who work so hard to shine in their chosen disciplines; we would like to congratulate each of the winners who will step up to take their trophies in just a little while too.

I would also like to congratulate the stars who go on to compete at the international level, bringing glory to our country and our sport.

We hope to continue taking giant strides and become a major motorsporting force soon.

With this goal in mind, we always try to encourage promoters and organisers to adopt interesting projects or conceive new ones.

I will be failing in my duty if I don’t thank everybody involved in FMSCI, right from the frontline marshalls to officials to doctors who make each of our event magnificent. The Government of India and the Sports Ministry in particular, keep supporting us in a big way and we are thankful to them. A big thank you of course to all our promoters and sponsors who make all this possible. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Secretariat, Rajan Syal, V S Shriakant, Naren, John and Sivaguru who work for us.

Once again, I thank each of you for being here, for your support and your love for the sport. Thank you.
