2018 Farm Bill Signed into Law The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 was signed into law today by President Trump at aceremony in Washington DC National Sorghum Producers Chairman Dan Atkisson a sorghumfarmer from Stockton Kansas attended the event and released the following statement Todays signing is a culmination of hard work commitment and intelligent planning by Congressto get the bill across the finish line before the end of the year We know this bill invests in thefuture of agriculture and NSP would like to thank the Administration as well as the leaders ofthe House and Senate Agriculture Committees and their staffs for their leadership NSP has been engaged in the farm bill process since hearings began in 2017 We have witnessedboth chambers make focused efforts to meet the needs of rural America and applaud theresulting legislation The 2018 Farm Bill contains policy that will maintain and enhanceopportunities for sorghum producers and all of US agriculture and we look forward to workingwith the Administration through its implementation A full analysis of the farm bills impacts on sorghum will be in the winter issue of SorghumGrower magazine released in January and online at sorghumgrowerscom USDA Approves Final Installment of Market Facilitation Program Payments US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced on Monday the second and final round oftrade aid payments for US farmers hurt by the retaliatory actions of US trade partnersProducers of certain crops will now be eligible to receive payments under the MarketFacilitation Program (MFP) for the second half of their 2018 production NSP Board of DirectorsChairman Dan Atkisson made the following statement in response to USDArsquos announcement ldquoNational Sorghum Producers would like the thank President Trump USDA Secretary SonnyPerdue and all other involved US officials for following through a second time on theircommitment to provide farmers needed relief from trade retaliations Sorghum producers areat the end of a difficult harvest season in many regions of the Sorghum Belt and thesepayments will help mitigate the drop in prices sorghum farmers have faced since China stoppedimporting US sorghum earlier this spring ldquoWe are also encouraged by the recent soybean purchases made by China and we remainhopeful these sales are a sign negotiations between the US and China will soon lead to apositive resolve US sorghum farmers look forward to working with our Chinese customersagain in the near future and NSP will continue to work on behalf of our members to achievelong-term markets solutions that benefit sorghum farmersrdquo The Market Facilitation Program was announced in July to help mitigate short-term tradedamages from trade retaliations on US agriculture exports Sorghum producers are eligible toreceive $086 per bushel on 2018 production Eligible producers need to complete theapplication by Jan 15 2019 Producers who have already applied will receive a secondpayment for the remaining 50 percent of total production 2018 NSP Yield Contest Winners Announced The 2018 NSP Yield Contest winners have been announced Farmers from 24 states entered towin this yearrsquos contest Producer yields are highlighted in five different categories This yearrsquos
