National Sheep and Goat Census

December 2013

Council Regulation (EC) No. 21/2004 obliges all Member States to carry out

an annual census of sheep and goats. This national census is the ninth such

census since the first census was carried out in December 2005.

Sheep

Sheep census forms for 2013 were sent to 41,781 registered sheep flock-

keepers on this Department’s database and returns were received from

38,380 which represents a response rate of 92%. A total of 4,076

respondents had no sheep in December 2013 with 978 of this number

indicating that they do not intend to return to sheep farming in the near future.

The overall number of flock owners who declared that they had sheep in

December 2013 was 34,304 which is an increase of 256 (approx 1%) on the

December 2012 figure of 34,048.

Census returns indicate that at December 2013 Ireland had 3.53 million sheep

(3,530,802) in 34,304 flocks including 2.46 million breeding ewes over 12

months of age. There was an average of 103 sheep per flock compared to

105 sheep per flock in 2012. A total of 68% of flocks contain sheep numbers

below the average flock size which is same percentage as that in 2011 and

2012.

The total number of sheep declared in December 2013 represents a decrease

of approximately 50,000 (1%) on the numbers declared in December 2012.

Goats

Goat census returns were received from 945 keepers who had a total of

12,182 goats in December 2013 which represents an increase of

approximately 3,700 goats or 44% on the December 2012 figure of 8,480.

The increase in the number of goats and goat keepers recorded arises from

the introduction of a combined sheep & goat census return form in 2013. The

combined form identified many registered sheep keepers who were also

keeping small numbers of goats but they were not registered goat keepers.

These particular keepers would not have been issued with a goat census form

to complete in previous years and the overall number of goats recorded in

previous years is therefore likely to have been underestimated. The average

number of goats per herd was 13 compared to 19 in 2012.

Number of Goats and No. of Goat Herds by Size of Herd

A total of 74% of herds contained 5 goats or less compared to 65% in 2012

and 61% in 2011. The percentage of herds containing between 6 and 10 was

10% compared to 17% in 2012 and the percentage containing between 11

and 50 goats was 10% compared to 11% in 2012. 51 herds (6% of total

herds) had in excess of 50 goats and the total number on goats contained

within these herds accounted for 64% of the total number of goats declared.
