National Portfolio D
ays are educational events for young artists. The events are held at host colleges throughout the U
nited States and C
anada. Portfolio Days bring together students and experienced college representatives w
ho review
artwork, offer critique, discuss college plans, and share inform
ation about their schools. These events are not an exam
ination or a competition. The art college representatives are interested in your developm
ent, look forward to
reviewing your w
ork, and will provide you w
ith helpful information for this next im
portant step in your development as
an artist. We suggest that you w
ork with as m
any representatives as possible.
At Portfolio D
ay, you’ll get a small taste of w
hat it could be like to attend a professional art program. You’ll see a
variety of artworks created at different levels by young artists w
ith varying skills and experiences. You may hear m
any different opinions about your w
ork. Do not hesitate to explain to the college representatives how
you develop your ideas and w
here you want to go w
ith them.
No adm
issions decisions or scholarship awards w
ill be offered to you at a National Portfolio D
ay. Some of the colleges
represented may accept the portfolio you present as the visual portion of your application, w
hile others have policies that prohibit m
aking a definitive admission decision at the tim
e of your review. A
ll will expect that your artw
ork will
progress in the coming m
onths.
If you are interested in graduate programs, w
e encourage you to contact individual institutions, as all colleges may not
be prepared to review graduate portfolios at N
ational Portfolio Days. A
Graduate N
PD
schedule is available online at w

What are National
Portfolio Days?
Your portfolio can include finished pieces, work in progress, and sketchbooks. W
e ask you to bring your original artw
ork whenever possible. W
e suggest that you do not spend time and m
oney matting or fram
ing your work. K
eep your presentation sim
ple; the work itself is w
hat is of interest to us.
What should I
bring to a National
Portfolio Day?
Artm
aking is a special kind of learning experience. Of particular concern to art students should be a college’s faculty,
facilities, and equipment. C
onsider the school’s proximity to m
useums, galleries, and other cultural resources as w
ell as its academ
ic standards, extracurricular activities, housing, costs, and financial aid offerings.
We urge you to gather enough inform
ation so that you may choose a supportive and stim
ulating art college environm
ent that meets your individual needs. Try your best to visit the colleges that interest you to get a feel for
each institution before you make your final decision. Investigate each school’s accreditations and the transferability
of credits completed to other colleges and degree program
s. Be sure you understand each school’s degree
offerings and majors.
