Orphaned at fourteen,Rexroth moved to live with his aunt inChicago, where he was expelled fromhigh school. He began publishing inmagazines at the age of fifteen. As ayouth, he supported himself with oddjobs- as a soda jerk, clerk, wrestler, andreporter. He hitchhiked around thecountry, visited Europe, and backpackedin the wilderness, reading andfrequenting literary salons and lecturehalls, and teaching himself severallanguages. 4.
