A BIT OF HISTORYColonization: Until the Middle Ages the mountain range and its foothills were

an unpopulated place of deep, impenetrable forests. The first mention of colonization of foothills are known from the

mid-13th century, it was probably a Slavic settlement.Later came the second wave of colonization of the German population that settled in the second half of the 13th century, mainly near the rivers Labe and Upa. Thus began the foothills rise resort city type, for example Hostinné and Trutnov. In the 14th century there was a turning point, when Silesia became part of the Czech crown and border forests lost its strategic importance.

Another important element was during the 16th century the development of mining industry . The mining industry was related to logging, which later turned into an enormous devastation of forests. All the wood was utilized, and thus the natural rejuvenation of the forest was avoided. It got so bad that the production had to be stopped in 1609 and moved to the Eagle Mountains(Orlické Hory).

were in very bad state. Causing the destruction and conversion of alpine vegetation. All rare flora disappeared. That started afforestation, but because of to imported seed, there was a gradual displacement of original highly resistant ecotype of spruce. It was replaced by the less resistant type.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the Krknoše tourism started to develop, economic building changed into tourist accommodation facilities for visitors. The originally small settlements became a major tourism and sports centers.
