he moment I meet the gorgeous Jenny Murdock at her Fresnaye house, I have a panic attack. She must be a supermodel and shes going to give us a really hard time during our photo shoot, I think. We shake hands, I catch my breath and it turns out that I am wrong: she is a warm, down-to-earth South American girl who just happens to look like a supermodel. Jenny recently moved to Cape Town with her Miami-born husband Laurent Lamothe, owner of a telecommunications company, and their two young children a one-yearold daughter and eight-year-old son. Upon arrival in Cape Town, the couple initially rented an apartment in the V&A Waterfront. However, because Laurent and Jenny are business-orientated people, they soon realised that instead of renting, a property investment would afford them the opportunity to make a prot when they return to Miami one day. M Design, a company that specialises in sourcing run-down properties along the Atlantic Seaboard, helped the couple to nd a suitable home. Owned by Robert
Thomson, the company also offers architectural and interior design and supply services. An uncompleted renovation perched high against Signal Hill, overlooking Fresnaye, Sea Point and the Atlantic Ocean, appealed to the couple. Robert instantly knew there was just one way to go with the interior: slick, sexy and glamorous. He explains: This couple is so glamorous that I decided to bring in lots of shine. I wanted ultimate sophistication. The couple agreed to Robert and his colleague Lucy Stephensons design concept, and they went all out with reective surfaces combining glass chandeliers, aluminium, mirrors and Perspex to stylish effect. The indulgent theme starts right at the front door, where aluminium strips transformed the existing door into a designer piece. An eye-catching curved chandelier lights up the all-white lounge area and a mirror-clad n divider catches and reects the afternoon light, while separating the dining area from the TV room. These reective elements continue at the outdoor pool area, where a thin strip of mirror runs along the perimeter wall,
creating an eye-catching focal point. Robert and Lucy achieved the perfect balance between the two extremes of pareddown and decorative. Despite the many reective surfaces and designer furniture, the space remains uncluttered yet retains a sophisticated feel. The real show-stopper the main bedroom is separated from the open-plan bathroom by a dry wall. Clad in gold mosaic on both sides, this wall forms the backdrop to a bronze mirror-clad bed. Notwithstanding the indulgent, luxurious elements throughout, Robert was adamant that he wanted a harmonious feel to spread through their home. He achieved this by using white porcelain oor tiles throughout the house. This principle was applied to the window treatments as well: the same sheer white curtains were tted consistently through the interior of the house. An ode to modern design, Jenny and Laurents home oozes sexy designer chic that is seldom seen. It is an exceptionally glamorous home that has made this jetsetting couple feel right at home here in South Africa.
