National Library of Australia: Overview

The National Library of Australia(NLA), while formally established by the passage of the National Library Act, 1960, it is the country's largest reference library.

The role is to ensure that documentary resources of national significance relating to Australia and the Australian people, as well as significant non-Australian library materials, are collected, preserved and made accessible either through the Library itself or through collaborative arrangements with other libraries and information providers.

The Library has Australia's largest and most diverse collection of information resources and services - over 9 million items including books, maps, pictures, manuscripts and oral histories.

Through the internet library provide a range of information

including our catalogue, journal indexes, databases and guides, exhibitions, What‘s on and access to our publications through the online shop.
