SIZING JOHN GETS MEASURE OF IRISH GOLD CUP RIVALSA high-class dayrsquos racing at Leopardstown yesterday on Irish Gold Cup day saw three of the four Gr1 contests won by French-breds and the feature going to the British-bred Midnight Legend gelding Sizing John in the colours of Ann and Alan Potts

Trained by Jessica Harrington and ridden by Robbie Power the seven-year-old was settled on the outter of the chasing pack as Road To Riches (Gamut) and Don Poli (Poliglote) cut out the running In a thrilling finish the six remaining runners were covered by three lengths heading to the last fence where More Of That (Beneficial) unseated Mark Walsh and Sizing John jumped to the lead ahead of Don Poli who had taken it up four from home He pulled clear to win by three-quarters of a length from Empire Of Dirt (Westerner) who was given a patient ride by Jack Kennedy and came from behind while the favourite Don Poli was the same distance back in third

This is the second Gr1 success for the gelding as he won the Future Champions Novicesrsquo Hurdle here in 2014 It is his sixth career victory and fourth in Graded company He was last seen winning the Gr3 Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles last month and on his previous five runs all in Gr1 company he was placed each time and on three of those occasions was second only to Douvan

Harrington said ldquoHe was brilliant Itrsquos fantastic to have a horse like

that for Alan and Ann who has finished so close to Douvan on many occasions That was his first time over three miles and he jumped travelled and did everything we had hoped he would

ldquoHe jumped really well and he was just brilliant Once he went past two and a half miles we knew he was into unknown territory but we fully expected he would stay three miles and he did

There were plenty of lots by European shuttle stallions that would have turned a profit for their vendors on the day but the best price was the A$150000 Hawkesbury trainer Terry Clift paid for a daughter of Myboycharlie and the New Zealand-bred Towkay mare Sassy Vixen Offered as Lot 183 by Goodwood Farm at Murrurundi in the Hunter Valley the filly is a half-sister to the seven-time winner Sassy Tycoon out of a sister to Starkay who won as a juvenile in her native New Zealand before being exported to America where she won Stakes races at both Del Mar and Hollywood Park

There has been plenty of interest in the first season sire brigade this weekend with Dundeel better known through his racing name of Itrsquos A Dundeel and Zoustar the pick of the bunch As it transpired each of those stallions would have a A$160000 sale on Sunday the best by freshman stallions

The first of the Zoustars made a huge impression as foals and have followed that up as yearlings A son of the ill-fated speedster Northern Meteor Zoustar was a dual Gr1 winner at three the Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill and the Coolmore Stud Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington both dominant performances

His A$160000 sale yesterday came from the draft of Kevin Maloneyrsquos Segenhoe Stud as agent and was a colt out of the Lonhro mare Cautious Gr3-placed as a juvenile Cautious managed a pair of wins that same season at 900 and 1000 metres so short course racing was her speciality She is a sister to the South African Listed winner Buckinghampshire from the family of the young stallion Stryker and this was her first foal

The colt was bought by Americarsquos Justin Casse who has linked up with Bob Lapointersquos Muskoka Farm in a pinhooking joint venture So far the pair have bought four youngsters for A$425000 the others being a More Than Ready and a pair of Al Maherrsquos all colts

Todayrsquos final session will start again at 9am with the last lot predicted to go through around 2pm That will give buyers and vendors plenty of time to make the short trip to Randwick to watch Winx strut her stuff in the Apollo Stakes rescheduled for 540pm
