The Canadian Society for Yad Vashem (CSYV) is privileged to collaborate with the Government of Canada to present the annual National Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony. This year’s theme is Struggle for Survival: Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, the Nazis sought to annihilate the Jews not only physically, but to erase all traces of our culture and religion.

Today, Holocaust education becomes more urgent as significant numbers of Canadians are losing the memory of the Holocaust. A study released by the Claims Conference and the Azrieli Foundation in January 2019 concluded that many Canadians do not know the basic facts of the Holocaust, with Millennials (age 18 -34) being particularly uninformed. It is incumbent on each of us to educate ourselves about the Holocaust so that we may contribute to a positive and tolerant climate in Canada.

Throughout the year, CSYV empowers educators to make a difference. Constantly evolving, CSYV has introduced Leaders of Change, a new scholarship stream that will take up to 25 leaders in education from Canadian universities and high schools to Berlin and Poland, where they will interact with European Holocaust history in a personal, intense and experiential way. With this experience, leaders in education are empowered to influence and transform Holocaust education in their home institutions.

Now in its fifth year, the impactful Ambassadors of Change program promotes tolerance and social justice in high school students, our leaders of tomorrow. Today, just prior to the National Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony, over 200 students from Ontario and Quebec high schools heard the first-hand testimony of Holocaust survivors and reflected on what they learned. Sadly, this will be the last generation to personally engage directly with Holocaust survivors.

Together, we take up the “struggle” to combat a growing tide of intolerance and hate in our communities, both in our streets and in our discourse. We each have an important role to play as we move from Memory to Remembrance. At CSYV, we invite you to become partners in this critical mission.

MANY JEWISH RESISTANCE EFFORTS WERE RECORDED IN HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF THE SHOAH. DEPRIVED OF RESOURCES AND LIVING IN CONSTANT FEAR OF THE NAZI TERROR, RESISTANCE WAS CERTAINLY DIFFICULT, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE. DURING THE HOLOCAUST, THE JEWS FOUGHT NOT ONLY FOR THEIR PHYSICAL SURVIVAL, BUT THEY ALSO FOUGHT TO PRESERVE THEIR JEWISH ANCESTRAL HERITAGE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Jewish resistance efforts were cultural, spiritual and, also took the form of armed resistance. Every effort was made to live life as normally as possible despite the harsh conditions. Throughout Nazi-occupied Europe, hundreds of schools were run inside the ghettos. For example, Janusz Korczak, a famous children’s writer and educator, set up an orphanage inside the Warsaw ghetto. He tried to make his students’ lives as normal as possible in the Ghetto. When the Polish underground offered Korczak an escape, he refused to abandon his children. Instead, he accompanied them when they were transported to the Treblinka extermination camp.

Cultural resistance included documenting daily life, keeping diaries, reading books, writing poems and songs, drawing and art, and the staging of concerts and plays. Maintained in secrecy, various illegal underground libraries serve as another powerful example of unarmed resistance. In the Vilna Ghetto, the Jewish community amassed a library and celebrated the acquisition of its 100,000th volume. Perhaps the most famous diary from the Holocaust was written by Anne Frank; the legacy she left continues to serve as a compass to shape a better future for the generations to come.

Jews were not allowed to observe religious rituals in most ghettos. Despite that, however, they continued to pray in secret and observed religious services in basements, attics, and secret rooms. In Warsaw alone, in 1940, there were 600 prayer groups. Prayer served to instill courage, reaffirm cultural and religious identity, and provide comfort in the face of both physical and spiritual extermination. They have left a legacy, reminding future generations of the importance of Jewish values and customs which were preserved at high cost.

Some Jews staged overt resistance efforts, taking up arms to fight for the survival of their community. The Jewish armed resistance would at times join partisan units in Eastern Europe or participate in underground movements in Western Europe. Close to 100 underground organizations were formed through ghettos in Nazi-occupied Europe. These groups sought to stage armed uprisings or break out of the ghettos to join the partisans. The Sobibor uprising was but one example of armed resistance. On October 14, 1943, 600 prisoners mounted an escape attempt; only 60 survived and were able to join the partisans. On October 7, 1944, prisoners succeeded in blowing up one of the four crematoria at Auschwitz; all were murdered.

Although the vast majority of those who participated in resistance efforts against the Nazi regime did not outlive the Shoah, their acts of bravery remain a testament to the spirit of the people who endured.

Established in 1986, the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem’s (CSYV) mission is to educate Canadians about the Holocaust. Through educational and commemorative programs, CSYV perpetuates the memory of the Holocaust and disseminates its universal lessons to all Canadians.

CSYV is committed to promoting sustainable quality Holocaust education across Canada. The Holocaust is a subject that inspires critical thought amongst students, such as examining basic moral issues and exploring what it means to act and think independently. It is a fundamental subject for promoting tolerance, combatting prejudice and antisemitism, as well as enhancing citizenship in our classrooms and communities.

IMPACT OF CSYV’S WORKCSYV ensures that the memory of the Holocaust is kept alive and that the universal lessons of the Holocaust are disseminated through impactful programs:

• Over the past 15 years, 250 Canadian educators have participated in CSYV’s Scholarship Programs, which have empowered them to implement Holocaust education in their classrooms and educational institutions. CSYV’s two scholarship streams are: Leaders of Change, a 14-day experiential learning opportunity at sites in Berlin and Poland, and a three-week seminar at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem.

• Over the past 5 years, 1000 Canadian high school students have participated in the Ambassadors of Change program, which brings students to Ottawa to hear first-hand accounts of Holocaust survivors and participate in discussions about the Holocaust and its relevance today.

• Since 1991, thousands of individuals and families have visited the CSYV Holocaust Memorial Site at Earl Bales Park, Toronto, which commemorates the victims of the Shoah, pays tribute to Survivors, honours “Righteous Among the Nations” and showcases the shattering toll of the Holocaust on humanity.

• Plans are underway to launch a new Youth Holocaust Education Program featuring the CSYV Memorial Site at Earl Bales Park, 4169 Bathurst Street, Toronto. This program will be available to over 10,000 students each year.

• In the last five years, over 100 B’nai Mitzvah have twinned with a child who did not survive the Holocaust through CSYV’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah Twinning program.

• Over 12,000 individuals, including our countries highest government leaders, have attended and participated in CSYV’s Holocaust Commemoration events: the annual National Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa and the annual Tribute to Holocaust Survivors at Queen’s Park, Toronto.

La Société canadienne de Yad Vashem (SCYV) a le privilège d’organiser la Cérémonie annuelle de la Journée nationale de commémoration de l’Holocauste en collaboration avec le gouvernement du Canada. Cette année, le thème de la cérémonie est « La lutte pour la survie : la résistance juive pendant l’Holocauste ». Au cours de l’Holocauste, les nazis ont cherché à anéantir les Juifs, non seulement physiquement, mais aussi d’effacer toute trace de notre culture et de notre religion.

L’enseignement de l’Holocauste devient aujourd’hui encore plus urgent alors qu’un nombre important de Canadiens a perdu la mémoire de la Shoah. Une étude publiée par la Claims Conference et la fondation Azrieli en janvier 2019, a montré que de nombreux Canadiens ne connaissaient pas les faits fondamentaux de l’Holocauste, surtout au sein de la génération des millénaires (âgés de 18 à 34 ans). Il est de notre responsabilité collective d’étudier la Shoah et, ainsi, contribuer au climat positif et tolérant au Canada.

Tout au long de l’année, la SCYV permet aux enseignants de faire la différence. Étant en constante évolution, elle a introduit les « Leaders du Changement », un nouveau programme de bourses qui amènera 25 enseignants des universités et collèges canadiens à Berlin et en Pologne, où ils s’immergeront dans l’histoire européenne de l’Holocauste, et ce, de manière personnelle. Grâce à cette expérience, les enseignants acquerront le pouvoir d’influencer et de transformer l’enseignement de l’Holocauste dans leurs établissements respectifs.

Étant maintenant dans sa cinquième année, notre puissant programme « Les Ambassadeurs du Changement » promeut la tolérance et la justice sociale chez nos élèves du secondaire, nos leaders de demain. Aujourd’hui-même, juste avant la Cérémonie annuelle de la Journée nationale de commémoration de l’Holocauste, plus de 200 élèves d’écoles secondaires ontariennes et québécoises ont écouté les témoignages de survivants de l’Holocauste et ont réfléchi à ce qu’ils ont appris. Malheureusement, ce sera la dernière génération à interagir directement avec les survivants de l’Holocauste.

Ensemble, nous nous engageons dans la «lutte» pour combattre la vague croissante d’intolérance et de haine, à la fois dans nos communautés ainsi que dans nos discours. Chacun de nous a un rôle important à jouer à mesure que nous passons de Mémoire au Souvenir. Nous vous invitons à devenir partenaires de cette mission importante.

PLUSIEURS EFFORTS DE LA RÉSISTANCE JUIVE ONT ÉTÉ CONSIGNÉS DANS DES DOCUMENTS HISTORIQUES DE LA SHOAH. LA PEUR CONSTANTE DE LA TERREUR NAZIE ET LE MANQUE DE RESSOURCES, ONT CERTES LIMITÉ LES TENTATIVES DE RÉSISTANCE MAIS DE NOMBREUX EXEMPLES, GRAVÉS DANS LES ARCHIVES HISTORIQUES DE LA SHOAH, PROUVENT QUE MÊME SI ELLE FUT DIFFICILE, ELLE NE FUT PAS IMPOSSIBLE.La résistance juive a revêtu de nombreuses formes : résistance culturelle et spirituelle, et résistance armée. En dépit des conditions insupportables, tous les efforts étaient mis en œuvre pour vivre aussi normalement que possible. À travers l’Europe sous domination nazie, des centaines d’écoles furent établies à l’intérieur des ghettos. Par exemple, Janusz Korczak, célèbre écrivain et éducateur pour enfants, créa un orphelinat dans le ghetto de Varsovie. Il tentait ainsi de rendre la vie de ses élèves dans le ghetto la plus « normale » possible. Lorsque la résistance polonaise lui offrit la possibilité de s’échapper, Korczak refusa d’abandonner ses enfants et les accompagna plutôt lors de leur transport vers le camp d’extermination de Treblinka.Pour résister sur le plan culturel, de nombreux Juifs se tournèrent vers la rédaction de journaux intimes et de documents sur leur vie quotidienne, la lecture, l’écriture de poèmes et de chansons, le dessin, l’art, l’organisation de concerts et de pièces de théâtre. Les diverses bibliothèques clandestines constituent un autre exemple puissant de la résistance non armée. La communauté juive du ghetto de Vilna constitua une bibliothèque et célébra l’acquisition de son 100 000e ouvrage. Le journal le plus célèbre écrit pendant l’Holocauste est probablement celui d’Anne Frank, qui a été lu par des millions de personnes à travers le monde. Son héritage continue à inspirer la création d’un monde meilleur pour les générations à venir.Dans la plupart des ghettos, il était interdit d’observer les rituels religieux juifs. Malgré cela, les Juifs continuèrent à prier dans le secret et à tenir des services religieux dans des sous-sols, des greniers et des pièces cachées. En 1940, à Varsovie seulement, il y avait 600 groupes de prière. Face à l’extermination tant physique que spirituelle, la prière donnait du courage, permettait de réaffirmer l’identité culturelle et religieuse, et réconfortait les gens. Ils ont laissé un héritage, rappelant aux générations à venir l’importance des valeurs et des traditions juives qui, au prix de grands sacrifices, furent préservées.Certains Juifs se sont tournés vers la résistance armée afin de se battre pour la survie de leur communauté. Les résistants juifs se joignaient parfois aux unités de partisans en Europe de l’Est ou participaient aux mouvements clandestins en Europe de l’Ouest. Près de 100 organisations clandestines furent formées dans environ 100 ghettos à travers l’Europe occupée par les nazis. Ces groupes cherchaient à organiser des soulèvements armés ou à fuir les ghettos pour rejoindre les partisans. Le soulèvement de Sobibor n’est qu’un exemple de résistance armée. Le 14 octobre 1943, 600 prisonniers orchestrèrent une tentative d’évasion; seuls 60 d’entre eux survécurent et rejoignirent les partisans. Le 7 octobre 1944, des prisonniers réussirent à faire sauter l’un des quatre fours crématoires d’Auschwitz; tous furent capturés et assassinés.Si la grande majorité de tous ceux qui ont résisté au régime nazi n’ont pas survécu à la Shoah, leurs actes de bravoure demeurent un témoignage de l’esprit du peuple qui a perduré.

À PROPOS DE LA SOCIÉTÉ CANADIENNE DE YAD VASHEM

Fondée en 1986, la Société canadienne de Yad Vashem (SCYV) a pour mission de sensibiliser les Canadiens à l’égard de l’Holocauste. Grâce à ses programmes éducatifs et commémoratifs, la SCYV perpétue la mémoire de l’Holocauste et transmet ses leçons universelles à tous les Canadiens.La SCYV a pour mission de promouvoir un enseignement de qualité et durable à l’égard de l’Holocauste à travers le Canada. Il s’agit d’un sujet qui suscite une réflexion critique chez les étudiants, par exemple, à travers l’examen des questions morales, ou encore, en explorant ce que signifie d’agir et de penser de manière indépendante. Ceci est fondamental pour l’avancement de la tolérance, de la lutte contre les préjugés et l’antisémitisme, ainsi que la promotion de la citoyenneté dans nos salles de classe et nos communautés.

L’IMPACT DE NOTRE TRAVAIL La SCYV veille à ce que la mémoire de la Shoah soit maintenue et que les leçons universelles de l’Holocauste soient transmises à travers de ces activités importantes :• Au cours des 15 dernières années, 250 enseignants canadiens ont participé au « Programme de bourses d’études

sur l’Holocauste », qui leur ont permis de mettre en œuvre l’enseignement de la Shoah dans leurs salles de classe. Les deux programmes de bourses de la SCYV sont « Les Leaders du Changement », une opportunité d’apprentissage expérientiel de 14 jours sur les sites à Berlin et en Pologne, ainsi qu’un séminaire de trois semaines à Yad Vashem, à Jérusalem.

• Au cours des cinq dernières années, 1,000 élèves d’écoles secondaires provenant de tout le pays ont participé au programme « Les Ambassadeurs du Changement ». Le programme rassemble les étudiants à Ottawa, où ils ont la rare opportunité d’entendre les témoignages de survivants de la Shoah et de participer aux discussions sur l’Holocauste et sa pertinence aujourd’hui.

• Depuis 1991, des milliers de personnes ont visité le site commémoratif de l’Holocauste situé au parc Earl Bales à Toronto. Le site commémore les victimes de la Shoah, rend hommage aux survivants de l’Holocauste, honore les Justes parmi les Nations et met en lumière les effets dévastateurs de la Shoah.

• Nous planifions lancer un nouveau programme éducatif sur l’Holocauste pour les jeunes qui met en vedette le site commémoratif de SCYV au Parc Earl Bales, 4169 Rue Bathurst, Toronto. Ce programme sera offert à plus de 10,000 étudiants chaque année.

• Au cours des cinq dernières années, plus de 100 B’nai Mitzvah ont été jumelées avec un enfant qui n’a pas survécu à l’Holocauste grâce à notre programme de jumelage Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

• Plus de 12,000 personnes, dont les plus hauts dirigeants gouvernementaux de notre pays, ont participé aux activités de commémoration de l’Holocauste organisées par le SCYV, soit la Cérémonie annuelle de la Journée nationale de commémoration de l’Holocauste à Ottawa et l’hommage annuel aux survivants de l’Holocauste à Queen’s Park, à Toronto.
