DUELING STREAKS — Homer, MI, (above) holds the record for most con-secutive baseball wins as the Orioles won 75 games during the 2004 and2005 seasons. Homer set the record June 4, 2005 with a victory over UnionCity in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division IIIdistrict championship, and then the streak ended June 22 with a loss toSaginaw (Michigan) Nouvel Catholic High School in the MHSAA champi-onship game. THREE-SPORT STANDOUT — During his high school career at Brighton, MI, Drew Henson(left) distinguished himself in three sports. As a baseball shortstop-pitcher, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Henson set three national career records, including 70 home runs (now ranks second),290 runs batted in and 10 grand slam home runs, and he ranks fourth in runs scored (250).In addition, he set Michigan state career records for times walked (129), doubles (68), hits(257) and strikeouts by a pitcher (528). During his senior year (1998), Henson hit at a .605clip, while collecting 83 runs, 83 runs batted in and 22 home runs. As a football quarterback,he passed for 52 touchdowns as a senior, and as a basketball player, he finished his careeras Brighton’s all-time leading scorer, averaging 22 points a game. He was equally adept in theclassroom, where he maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Henson later played quar-terback on the University of Michigan football team, where he led the Wolverines to a CitrusBowl victory in 2001.

David Clyde, who pitched for Houston Westchester, TX, in the early 1970s, was aprep phenomenon. He was once listed in 14 separate categories in the National HighSchool Sports Record Book and his name still permeates the pitching categories.

Clyde is listed among the pitching leaders in nine categories and heads the nationallisting in five departments. His 842 career strikeouts are 110 ahead of No. 2 RonnieRichardson of Colum bus Lee, MS, and he is one of only two hurlers in prep history toregister more than 300 strikeouts in a season.

Clyde’s true dominance is shown in the number of times he is repeated. His 327 and251 strikeout totals from 1973 and 1972, respectively, rank second and eleventh in the sea-sonal strikeout category. No fewer than 43 times did Clyde strike out 10 or more batters inthe 61 games he started. Only four times over the last two years of his career did he allowfive or more hits.

Clyde was inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame in 2009.

cased their talents in as dramatic a fashion as KenBeardslee, pitching great from Vermontville, MI.

During his short 25-game high school careerhe struck out 452 hitters, won 24 of 25 pitchingdecisions, tossed eight no-hitters and two perfectgames. His lone setback was also a demonstrationof pitching brilliance as he dropped a 1-0 verdict hissenior year.

The Michigan strikeout artist averaged betterthan 18 strikeouts a game and in 1949 averagedmore than 19 whiffs a game, striking out 209 in only11 contests. He once set down 25 hitters on strikesin a 10-inning triumph over Holt.

Another of his top strikeout performancescame in a one-hitter when he registered 20 Ksagainst Saranac, and in a no-hit effort against

Potterville, he chalked up 19 strikeouts.The prep standout went on to sign for $6,000

with the New York Yankees in 1949. The aspiringyoung pitcher was one step from the big leagueswhen a back injury in the International League pre-maturely halted his career. His record in theYankees’ minor league chain was an impressive 62-24, including a 32-8 standard over his final two sea-sons.

When his playing days ended, Beards lee con-tinued to lend his talents to the game of baseball byconducting camps in Indiana and scouting for thePittsburgh Pirates for nearly 20 years. Among thetalents he came up with for the Pirates was DaveParker, power-hitting outfielder who paced Pitts -burgh to a world championship in 1979.

ONE-SCHOOL HALL OF FAMERS — Two baseball coaches, who wereboth inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame in 2009, havecompiled their records while coaching at one school. Guy Anderson(above left) of Rancho Cordova, CA, has won 837 games at the schoolsince 1970. Coaching his entire career at Oak Grove, MS, Harry Breland(above right) won 824 games from 1971 to 2007 as the school’s first base-ball coach.
