CNCI Conservation Committee

• The Council of National Cultural Institutions is a statutory body established under the Heritage Fund Act, 2001. www.cnci.ie

• The CNCI conservation committee has 6 representatives from Chester Beatty Library, Irish Museum of Modern Art, National Archives, National Gallery, National Library and National Museum of Ireland.

• The committee was established in 2007.

CNCI Conservation Committee- what we do

The committee aims to explore common preservation and conservation issues and support for conservation sector.

Disaster Response Framework of Co-Operation

The aim of this agreement is to provide each institution with further support for their conservation colleagues.

Three key areas were identified for cross institution co-operation in the event of a disaster:

• supply of materials

• provision of trained personnel

• emergency storage space A formal agreement, August 2009

• To assist museums, libraries and archives to immediately

respond effectively following an emergency or incident

involving water damage to collections.

• It is available to any museum, library, archive or cultural

collection of national or local significance across the 32

counties.

National Disaster Response Scheme

A number of essential and highly-specialised Disaster Response materials are available to handle water damage and mould remediation in the days immediately after a disaster. • water absorbent cushions • dehumidifiers to remove water and moisture from a flood or

leak site • heavy duty blotting paper to dry collections • essential hand tools • smaller useful items for salvaging mixed collections

How the scheme works

• The equipment is held at the National Museum of Ireland,

Collections Resource Centre in Swords, Co Dublin. • You must register your organization in advance to access the

material.

• It is the responsibility of the participant to collect the equipment needed and to replenish any stock used or return the equipment borrowed within one month of use.

• It is highly recommended that all registered participants to

the scheme have their own disaster response materials onsite.
