Core Initiatives

Efforts should begrounded in somebasic ideas:here areours

Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility

And Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility form the largest network providers to home users. Everyone has a role and when we take measures to be safer we a ctually make the Internet more secure.5

Often we make cybersecurity scary

Too often we use fear and scare tactics when we talk about cybersecurity. This level of negativity can have numerous bad impacts: making users feel like there is nothing they can do that would have an impact or numb them to the issue all together since it seems overwhelming.6

Or tell people security is about locking it down

A lot of security advice is sadly about getting people to limit what they do. There are many donts in the way discuss safety and security.7

Or to put up a wall

Or we tell them to have a walled city mentality and limit what they do online.8

What if we talked about security as enabling?A safe and trustedInternet means MORE

Connectivity and community11

How do we move from a a fog of threat, harm and risk to13

To a safer and more secure Internet were people are productive, engaged and safe?14

Start with We have to create a culture of safety and security where taking the steps to be safer and more secure are second nature (BTW, first nature is instinct and second nature is learned behavior that becomes habit through practice and repetition like: looking both ways before crossing the street, coughing into your elbow. How many learned by coughing into your hand know need to think before you actually cough into your elbow?

Can it be done?15

We have gone all waste combined to a recycling culture16

We can go from panic to safer and more secure use of the Internet as well18

Efforts are designed to move the notion of a culture of cybersecurity forward

25 companies & 7 federal agencies worked together with leadership from the National Cyber Security Alliance and APWG to create harmonized messaging on cybersecuritySharing the responsibility

With experts and consumers

Reviewed the existing message landscape, conducted research to find the issues that were important. And what would Motivate behavior change and messages that worked. We found a high concern for ID theft and financial loss, that security brings peace of mind. That people want common sense actions to take. And importantly, people very much and believed that when they took steps to be safer that they made Internet more secure!23

Its a positive message:

Take safety and security precautionsThink about the consequences of behaviorsand actionsConnect and enjoy the Internet

Follows a classic way we message:Stop, Drop and RollLook both ways before crossingReduce, Reuse, RecycleStop, Look and Listen
