Foreword

Idormation contained .in this report is based on data solicited

from the Chief Justices of the several state courts of last resort and

from Court Administrative Officers now operating in close to 45 States.

We are most grateful to them for their splendid cooperation in furnish-

ing the data.

We hope this compilation will be useful to judges and other

state officials interested in the judicial branch of state government. We

also hope that any errors of omission or commission may be brought

to our attention for inclusion in the next edition of this report.

The Council of State Governments wishes to acknowlodge the

work of the staff of the State Criminal Justice. Assistance Program, funded

by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, who helped compile

the data and information presented in this report.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This compilation contains the names of the Justices of the courts

of last resort of the ,fifty States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

For each State, the namea are listed in order of seniority of service

on the court, except that the Chief Justice is listed first, and that,

where there is a Vice Chief Justice or Justice otherwise designated

specially, his name is listed next. . (

The date on which service commenced, in the first column, is the

date on which the Justice first began to serve on the particular court.

The other columns show the dates on which the present term commenced and

'031.11 terminate. In most instances, the termination date is in accord

with the number of years fixed by statute, but in some cases the termina-

tion date shown reflects the necessity of a Justice retiring at a certain

age, even though the term for which he was elected or appointed ~V'ould not

have expired. Where information regarding a retirement date was provided,

it has been noted in a footnote. L~kewise, when it was known that a

Justice ~V'as chosen to fill a vacancy, this 'tnformation appears in a

footnote.

In a majority of the States, the dates of the present terms listed.

for Chief Justices are the dates of their terms as Justices. In these ,

instances, footnotes indicate their respective terms as Chief Justices.

The terms indicated by the last two columns are full terms where Chief

Justices are popularly elected or appointed for full terms.
