Question: Dear Uncle Timmy, I am a new shooter with a terrible problem. My rifle simply will not agg. I have tried different bullets, powder, front and rear bags, barrels, prayer, swear-ing; everything known in benchrest. I am at my wits end so as a very last re-sort I have come to you. Can you help me?
Answer: Oh you have a terrible prob-lem. Your rifle has a curse on it and it is a doozy. Do not despair. It can be lift-ed. Take a brand new $20.00 bill. Rub it over the stock, barrel, action and scope. The curse will be transferred to the money. Place it in an envelope and send it to Ask Uncle Timmy care of this magazine. I will take it and in a secret ceremony at the local McDonalds re-
move the curse. Better also use a ten spot and send that too in case a “super size” curse removal is needed.
Question: Dear Uncle Timmy, I am so confused. I have two friends who are good shooters. They are very willing to give me advice when I am struggling in a match. The problem is that their advice is always conflicting. If one says go up in powder then the other says go down. One says shoot the left to right blow. The other says shoot the straight on. One uses daisy wheel flags. The other hates them. Both always do well and I do not. How do I choose which one is right?
Answer: Ha. This one is easy but re-quires some preparation. Have both of your friends face each other about ten feet apart. In front of each one place a pile of fresh cow paddies, dead rats, live skunks, large animal abdominal or-gans and rotten vegetables. Give each 10 minutes to hurl as much of the pile in front of them as possible at each other while screaming insults. For ex-ample: person 1 yells OFFAL! and hurls a cow colon at person 2 who responds
with PRIMORDIAL SLIME! and throws a live skunk back. At the end of 10 min-utes the person with the least garbage on him is the winner and is right. If you need any additional instruction in this process simply watch the up-coming presidential debates on televi-sion.
Question: Dear Uncle Timmy. I have been shooting well for a couple of years now and steadily improving. I set my goals by picking a specific shooter to beat and then doing just that. This year I have set my sights on you. Can you give me any hints or secrets as to how to do this?
Answer: No.
Advice to Conflicted in Louisiana: Sure she is a playboy bunny who is rich and crazy about you but a Heavy 10 lathe in good condition for that price is a better deal in the long run.

MATCH REPORTJOHN HORN
takes 4-Gun at 2011 Group Nationals
Midland, Texas
It is only appropriate to begin this report by recognizing the parties in-volved in putting on this match. I want to first thank the Midland Shooters As-sociation for hosting this event, closely followed by the people who worked all week to make it a success. John Krenik, our range officer who so ably called the match, Joe Smith and his crew of Louis, Cameron, Jackie and Jennifer who worked tirelessly to keep the tar-gets changed, Pam Black who scored the targets, Amanda Buchanan, who ran the computer and kept the targets hung, Tim Oltersdorf, our surreptitious photographer, Brenda Smith, assisted by Gaylene who worked so hard in the kitchen to keep us fed, complete with her famous pies and cobblers and all the club volunteers who kept the trash emptied, bathrooms clean and all the other things that go into making a match happen. I also want to thank Kelblys for supplying the scorecards, John Horn and the other shooters from Seymour, Texas, who printed competi-tor numbers on the targets, Howard Scott for getting the moving backers ready, Charles Huckeba for making the target frames look like new, and all the local shooters who sanded, paint-ed and effected repairs to the range in preparation for the match. Thank you all! Now lets get to the match itself.
The week preceding the match saw generally good conditions for practice on Monday and Tuesday, followed by rain Wednesday and Thursday to settle the dust. Friday, Saturday and Sunday saw really nice weather for practice. About 3:00 p.m. Sunday the range was closed for practice and match frames went up in preparation for the Unlim-ited 100 to be contested the next day.
On Monday, for the Unlimited 100, conditions were generally mild, slowly picking up in intensity. When all eight matches had been contested, and all the smoke cleared, Tony Boyer came out on top, for the fourth year in a row, shooting a .2369 agg. George Kelbly Sr. closely followed in second, .2414, Gary Ocock was third, .2556, Eric Stanton was fourth, .2605 and
Gene Bukys rounded out the top five with a .268. Gene Bukys also shot the small group, a nice .158.Tuesday morning arrived with very little wind for the Unlimited 200, how-ever that would change early in the day ushering in moderate and switchy conditions for the rest of the day. To illustrate how the conditions were, sixteen of the top twenty finishers had at least one group over an inch,
including the top four. At the end of the days shooting, Gene Bukys got the win (and a point) with a .2866 aggre-gate. Bob Scarbrough Jr. was second, .3119, Larry Costa was third, .3128, John Horn was fourth, .3199 and Bill Symons rounded out the top five with a .3211. Gary Ocock shot the small group, a really nice .280.
By virtue of his win at 200 yd. and fifth at 100 yd., Gene Bukys won the unlim-ited grand (and his tenth and eleventh Hall Of Fame points!) with a .2773 ag-gregate. Congratulations Gene! Bob Scarbrough Jr. was second, .2931, George Kelbly Sr. was third, .3018, Larry Costa was fourth, .3025 and John Horn was fifth, with a .3084.
Wednesday ushered in the best shoot-ing conditions the shooters saw all week. That morning, In the Sporter 100, Don Powell led the way, winning with a .1878. Ken Terrell came in sec-ond with a .2054, John Horn was third, .2056, Tony Boyer was fourth, .2094 and Andy Shifflett was fifth, .2200.
Don Powell also shot the small group for the yardage, a .094. After lunch, in the Light Varmint 100, Mike Ratigan came out on top, with a nice .2072 aggregate. John Horn was second, .2100, Tony Boyer was third, .2178, Bob Scarbrough Jr. was fourth, .2290 and Eric Stanton was fifth, with a .2366. Lou Murdica shot the small group of the yardage, a small .097.

cold front blew into the area, making for the worst shooting conditions the shooters faced all week! That morn-ing, in the Heavy Varmint 100, John Horn didn’t notice that it was blow-ing a gale, winning the yardage with a .2490 aggregate. Larry Scharnhorst was second, .2560. Jeff Thompson came in third, .2610, Mike Ratigan was fourth, .2630 and Gene Bukys was fifth, .2750. Lawrence Weisdorn shot the small group, an impressive.128. That afternoon, after the awards for the Unlimited and the NBRSA meeting,
most of the shooters chose to relax in anticipation of the 200 yard competi-tion coming up the next day.Friday morning the Heavy Varmint 200 was contested in conditions that were vastly improved over the day before. B.G. Lott led the way to get the win and his first HOF point, shooting an im-pressive .1800 aggregate. Gene Bukys was second, ..1988, Billy Stevens was third, .2009, Harley Baker was fourth, .2162 and Steve Robbins rounded out
the top five with a .2167. Rodney Brown posted the small group for the yardage, a tiny .154.The Heavy Varmint grand came out like this; Gene Bukys won his second grand aggregate of the week with a .2369 aggregate. Mike Ratigan was second, .2478, Cecil Tucker was third, .2482, John Horn was fourth, also with a .2482 and Billy Stevens was fifth with a .2542.
After the lunch break, the Light Var-mint 200 was contested in somewhat testier conditions. When the shooting was over and all the targets measured, Bob Scarbrough Jr. was the winner with a .2292 aggregate. Steve Robbins was second, .2327, Tony Boyer was third, .2337, Charles Hucheba was fourth, .2442 and Harley Baker was fifth, .2475. David Hudson shot the small group, a .249.
Tony Boyer came out on top in the Light Varmint grand with a .2257 aggregate. Bob Scarbrough Jr. was second, .2291, Charles Huckeba was third, .2512, Mike Ratigan was fourth, .2570 and Mike Stinnett was fifth, .2586.
Saturday morning finally arrived, along with the usual right to left conditions we often see in Midland for the Sport-er 200. After all five matches had been contested, Jeff Thompson outpaced the rest of the field, easily getting the win with a .2125 aggregate. James Mock was second, .2407, Steve Rob-bins was third, .2409, Jerry Kloeppel was fourth, .2412 and Gary Ocock was fifth posting a .2422. John Horn shot
the small group for the yardage, a nice .205.
Don Powell, by virtue of his 100 yard win and a top ten finish at 200 yards won the Sporter grand with a .2223. Tony Boyer was second, .2267, Jeff Thompson was third, .2413, John Horn was fourth, .2417 and Steve Robbins was fifth, .2439.Now that all the weeks’ shooting is
over, we can finally report the multi-gun aggregates. The Two-Gun was won by Tony Boyer with a .2262 Aggregate. Bob Scarbrough Jr. was second, .2483, John Horn was third, .2529, Charles Huckeba was fourth, .2548 and Don Powell was fifth, .2558.
The Three-Gun was a little more closely contested, however Tony Boyer also won with a .2494. John Horn was second, .2514, Bob Scarbrough Jr. was third, .2591, Gene Bukys was fourth, .2629 and Mike Ratigan was fifth, .2649.
After all was said and done, John Horn won the Four-Gun with a .2656. Gene Bukys came in second with a .2665, Tony Boyer was third, also posting a .2665, Bob Scarbrough was fourth, .2676 and Harley Baker rounded out the top five with a .2824.
Next years’ nationals will be contested at Phoenix, Arizona. Make your plans now to come revisit old friendships and test your abilities at the firing line.

nition plaque. Bob White has shot so well over the years that he was already holding 5 HOF points and this last win gives him 7 to tie. Presently there are only 4 inducted members of NBRSA’s
Long Range Hall of fame; Don Niel-son, Jerry Tierney, Billy Copelin and Skip Talbot (deceased). The 2012 Na-tionals should prove excit-ing as Rich-ard Schatz,
With all the fanfare of the Group Na-tionals, it seems like a good time to review the Top Guns in other NBRSA shooting disciplines. Normally there would be three other national events; but with the cancellation of the Long-Range Varmint Nationals, there were only two others held in 2011...

HUNTER NATIONALSGreg Swezey retained his title of Top Gun for 2011. Greg seems to enjoy challenges, since he also won the Casper Hunter Nationals in 2004 and again in 2010 at Wenatchee, Washing-ton.
This article was written by Audrey Brown with the kind assistance of Craig St Claire and Don Nielson.

Karl Hunstiger and Robert Hoppe also contend for HOF entrance. Congratu-lations to Peter, Bruce and Jay on a job well done in 2011. Let’s see what 2012 has in store!

18 Precision Rifleman January 2012
It is with sadness that we announce the loss of another benchrest great…Louis Palmisano has followed Ferris Pindell and left a hole in the benchrest com-munity. Louis was the last living “P” in the famous PPC, arguably the most ac-curate cartridge ever made. According to Dave Brennan, Lou conceptualized the cartridge and Ferris executed the idea. Lou won his first benchrest tour-nament in 1975 using his newly devel-oped PPC and from there the cartridge took on a life of its own and dominates the benchrest scene to this day.
Dr. Palmisano was a brilliant cardiac surgeon, who had studied medicine in Italy and received his credentials and licensing there before relocating to the US to practice. He settled in
Robert. Lou then dedicated it to his father naming it the John Palmisano Memorial Range. He was known to be a quite benevolent host.
He actively supported the US Olympic rifle teams and had an inventive spirit which he used in coordination with Norma and Sako in cartridge develop-ment.
According to Bob White, Lou was a woodchuck hunter before shooting benchrest. He originally located a box of .220 russian cases in a gun shop in New England and contacted Ferris Pin-dell, whose smithing skills Lou held in very high regard. The rest is history. In 1975, he won the HV 100 in the Su-per Shoot III held in Midland, TX shoot-ing with the new PPC design in a .22 cartridge.
Two months after Palmisano’s win at Midland, Ferris Pindell won three na-tional titles and Hall of Fame entrance at the 1975 Varmint and Sporter Na-tionals. Pindell won the 200-yard Sporter Championship, National Sport-er Championship and Heavy Varmint 100 Championship using the 6mm and .22 PPC. Originally the duo thought the .22 would be the best cartridge but the capacity of the case was too large and they changed to the 6mm believ-ing the smaller flash hole contributed to the increase in accuracy.
After serving in World War II and re-ceiving his honorable discharge from the Navy, Pindell went on to become a master gunsmith and machinist. He worked at both Knowles Tools and later Sierra Bullets until the 70’s when he broke off on his own and contin-ued his work independently. During his lifetime, he won 10 National Champi-onships and set 11 World Records as a marksman in various disciplines.
Both Pindell and Palmisano were in-ducted into the Benchrest Hall of Fame back in the 1980’s and are considered innovative pioneers in the field of ex-treme rifle accuracy. As the years since have proved, their novel cartridge has
NYC for several years and was held in high regard by his patients. By nature he held strong opinions and was a po-larizing force. As a physician, his skill matched his compassion and he had a great contingent of supporters who were devoted to him. Even after re-tirement, he returned to practice for one day in order to care for a former patient who needed life-saving surgery and refused to let anyone else but Lou operate.
Following his retirement, he visited a friend, Robert Hart, who had a ben-chrest specialty shop in Pennsylvania and had built a range in Wapwallo-pen. According to friends, Lou loved the wind-swept hillside despite its remoteness and purchased it from

become the bench rest shooting stan-dard among competitors.
Having not had the opportunity to meet either individual before their passing, it is perhaps best to close with the words of Tim Oltersdorf, who express-es his sadness in this way, “His time on earth was to short for someone with so much to give. He is either wildcatting with God or giving Satan lectures on machining; come to think of it – given Ferris’ gifts – probably both.”
Mike from Benchrest Central writes,
“not so much a legend but a corner-stone of modern benchrest shooting.” Regarding the duo, Brendan Atkinson writes, “Lou and Ferrris may have left the building, but the legacy and leg-end of the PPC will outlast most of us. That great benchrest range in the sky is really getting some strong competi-tors now.True legends of benchrest ....RIP

NBRSA News...Maretzo & Bob White for assisting the newbie (your truly) in gathering intel for the Pindel-Palmisano article.
Writers WantedAre you talented with the written word? Precision Rifleman magazine is interested in articles that you compose pertaining to the benchrest sport and all its intricacies. This is a golden opportunity to share your wisdom with your fellow shooting buddies. World Team Championship Benchrest, France Watch February’s issue for a full-fea-ture of this great event!
Clubs, Ranges,Match DirectorsThe next issue will focus on you and will introduce a new NBRSA Club of the Year Nomination Form and at least one Feature Article from your fellow Club Directors on how to increase partici-pation in a fun and informative way.Take the opportunity in this issue to look closely at the name, address and contact information listed for your range and let me know if there need to be any changes. Remember, I’m just a phone call or email away!
The Scoop on Target Shipping Costs Depending on where you live, target shipping costs can be challenging and costly. When orders are recieved from the membership, I understand the con-sternation and concerns about escalat-ing costs of shipping these targets. In response to this, Orrville Printing and NBRSA are moving to a same-day quote for shipments. What this means to you is that you’ll receive same-day quotes for your target orders in 2012 instead of receiving an annual zone-specific Target Order Form.
The goal is to keep dependable de-livery service while managing costs.
Contact us with your NBRSA News: 307 655-7415 or email [email protected]
Volume pric-ing discounts are not offered through Or-rville.
Bear in mind that NBRSA does not gen-erate revenue from target sales but rath-er passes the costs incurred directly to you from the printer with-out markup. The Same-day UPS pricing will be used with credit card orders and if paying with a check, we’ll quote the shipping costs at the time the check is received. Baring unforseen circumstances, the costs shouldn’t change too much in the time it takes for a check to be sent to NBRSA for target payment.
One way clubs have found to keep shipping costs down is to arrange with their region’s members who are driv-ing to shoots nearby Orrville, OH and having them pick up the order while they are there. Another idea is to have the targets shipped to your business address, saving the cost of a residen-tial surcharge. It may not work for everyone, but these are two ideas to consider.

It’s Your Magazine!Well Shooters, with the onset of a new, full-color magazine to highlight benchrest, it’s time to get those cards and letters ready for publishing. The NBRSA has been supporting benchrest for over 50 years and there is a wealth of knowledge, skill, helpful hints and funny anecdotes that some of you have passed along to each other over time. Because of your unsurpassed knowl-edge and skill as shooters, I humbly invite you to polish up those writing skills and use this magazine as a fo-rum to share your wisdom and some-times sordid stories with your fellow members in the benchrest community.
Are You Camera-Ready? Precision Rifleman is looking for a “few good men” who are great with a cam-era and don’t mind sharing their tal-ents with the rest of the NBRSA com-munity. We’re especially looking for action shots, individual member shots, club and range photos to add to our inventory. Digital photos that are at least 3Mb (or roughly 2400x1600 pix-els) give suitable resolution with JPG being the most common format. Preci-sion Rifleman is PC based, so any me-dia compatible with PCs should work. I hate to state the obvious, but please keep in mind this is a published maga-zine and etiquette is a good thing. If you wouldn’t want your mother to see it, it’s probably too risqué to publish. You can email pictures to the office email (below) but try to keep the total message below 8Mb in size per email If you have a bunch, you can send several emails with attachments or it may be easier to burn them onto a CD or DVD and send it to the busi-ness office at PO Box 6770, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Thank You A humble thank you to Tim Oltersdorf for his “Dear Uncle Timmy” article and Turk Takano for photo permission. Many thanks to Dave Brennan, Richard
