During the NBA 85th Annual Convention in New Orleans, Immediate Past Presi-

dent of the NBA, Mavis T. Thompson, presented the 2010 NBA ―Division of the Year‖ Award to the NBA Women Lawyers Division at the First Plenary Session on August 9, 2010. Immediate Past Chair of the WLD, Gloria Johnson, accepted the award on behalf of the division. The WLD is very proud of this honor and would like to thank its members for their continued service and support.

Greetings, Sisters-in-the-Law! I am honored to humbly serve as Chair of the Women Lawyers Division (WLD) and committed to fulfilling the mission of the WLD. We are excited to con-nect with you and update you on what’s been happen-ing in our division. As Chair, I have focused on two key initiatives: 1) to in-crease the membership and active participation of women lawyers in the WLD, and 2) to increase the visi-bility and involvement of the WLD in the community because ―We Do It Better Together!‖ To reach the first goal, we have developed a mem-bership and communication plan that has yielded great results. We recently held a WLD membership drive and increased our membership

by almost 30% in less than two months. As a part of our communication plan, the WLD has also launched our new website (www.nbawld.com), exclusive member listserv, Facebook page, e-

news blasts and this Sister Connection newsletter, which are vital tools to help us con-nect with you and other women lawyers across the nation. We will also publish a new WLD Membership Direc-tory to help our members to connect and network with each other.

We hope that you will take advantage of these new benefits and connect with

the WLD. There are many opportunities, which will be highlighted in this newslet-ter, for you to get involved and make a difference in the WLD. We need YOU! I look forward to seeing you at the WLD events in Baltimore!

On August 8, 2010, the WLD hosted its Annual Retreat at the New Orleans Marriott. The theme was ―I’m Every Woman,‖ and the focus was on pampering the ―whole‖ woman. The WLD mem-bers were invited to come be refreshed, re-newed and empowered ―as they relax their MIND, move their BODY and energize their SPIRIT!‖ During the retreat, the women had re-laxing massages from Serenity Spa therapists,

participated in line dancing with instructor/WLD member, Sheila Harvey, en-joyed music by DJ Rob Fresh, and received tips from ―Life in Bloom‖ life coach, Dr. Connie Stewart. The retreat was well attended and included an afternoon of food, fun and fellowship with a New Orleans style buffet lunch, a poetry reading, board games and door prizes.

CHAPTER 1

On August 11, 2010, the WLD hosted a CLE program entitled, ―Surviving the Eco-nomic Storm – Layoffs, Furloughs and Restructuring,‖ to address issues impacting women lawyers during the economic crisis. The panelists included: Debra D. Matlock (Director, Office of Contract Administration, Department of Human Services of State of Illinois); Linda Bray Chanow, (Executive Director, Center for Women in Law); Lawrence N. Hill (Assistant General Counsel, General Growth Properties); Cheryl Brown (Managing Director, Houston office of Major, Lindsey & Africa); and Lora Whitticker (Managing Director, Counsel on Call). The topics discussed in-cluded: 1) professional legal networks and negotiation of severance packages.

WLD Hosts CLE on Surviving the Economic Crisis

WLD Holds Annual Meeting & Elects New Officers On August 9, 2010, the WLD held its annual meeting at the New Orleans Mar-riott. Immediate Past Chair of the WLD, Gloria Johnson, presided over the meeting, which was well attended. After presentation of the Chair’s and Com-mittees’ reports and the adoption of the WLD Bylaw revisions, the election was held. DeMonica D. Gladney was elected the new WLD Chair. The other new officers are: Pamela J. Meanes, First Vice Chair; Monica Dula, Second Vice Chair; Geraldine C. Simmons, Treasurer; Sharonda R. Williams, Correspond-ing Secretary; Beryl Crumpton-Potter, Recording Secretary; and Iris McCollum Green, Parliamentarian. Mrs. Johnson will serve on the Board as Immediate Past Chair. The new Board Members for the 2010-2012 term are: Erika Butler-Akinyemi, Deborah Boddie, Rosalyn Mattingly and Stephanie Pompey.

On August 10, 2010, the WLD hosted its 38th Annual Networking & Awards Breakfast at the New Orleans Marriott. The theme was ―Celebrating the Past, Embracing the Present & Capturing the Future.‖ The keynote speaker for the breakfast was Anita F. Hill, Esq., Professor of Law, Public Policy and Women’s Studies, at Heller Graduate School of Policy and Management at Brandeis University. Professor Hill gave a very inspirational address to a packed room of women lawyers and judges. The program also included a special tribute to the WLD founders and presentation of the Distinguished

Scroll and Jurist of the Year Awards. The WLD, an affiliate of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), had a ―Hats for Dr. Height‖ salute in honor of the legacy of the late Dr. Dorothy Height. At the close of the program, the Honorable Yvette Alexander conducted the swearing in of the new WLD officers and board members for the 2010-2011 term.

During the NBA 83rd Annual Convention in San Diego, the WLD ini-tially launched its "Respect Yourself" Mentor Program to educate young, at-risk and disadvantaged African American girls on the impor-tance of respecting themselves and others. Past Chair of the WLD, Jean Johnson, was inspired with the idea for the mentor program after hearing negative comments about young girls on a radio talk show in 2007. The WLD Chair, DeMonica D. Gladney, embraced the idea and developed the mentor program, which was officially birthed on August 4, 2009. For the inaugural program, the WLD partnered with the San Diego Dream Team, which is a nonprofit organization affiliated with

the Spring Valley Middle School in Spring Valley, CA. The mentor program included a ―Sister-to-Sister‖ discus-sion and luncheon with twelve girls from the San Diego Dream Team and the WLD mentors.

During the NBA 30th Annual Mid-Year Conference and Gertrude E. Rush Award Dinner in St. Louis, the WLD hosted its "Respect Your-self" Mentor Program on April 10, 2010, in partnership with the Washington University Professor Kimberly Norwood's pipeline pro-gram for disadvantaged youth. This program began as a service component of Professor Norwood's Race, Education and the Law course at Washington University School of Law to teach and mentor students at Soldan International High School and was later expanded to Northwest Law Academy. Both high schools are in socioeconomi-cally depressed communities and struggle to meet grade proficiency

standards and to graduate high percentages of students. Twenty girls from these schools participated in the mentor program and were named the "St. Louis Dream Team" in honor of the first group of mentees.

On August 10, 2010, the WLD hosted its 2nd Annual "Respect Yourself" Mentor Program with twenty-five girls from the New Orleans Dream Team. Special guests included Judge Mablean Ephriam, Professor Anita F. Hill, career development profession-als and high school summer enrichment program coordinators from Dillard and Xavier Universities. The program’s emphasis was on the building blocks for taking ownership in one’s own up-ward mobility through the 3 Es – education, environment and ego (self respect, self-worth). In October 2010, the WLD coordinated a community project with the New Orleans Dream Team, which

planted a rain garden to build a bioswale with young professional engineers to help restore environmental ele-ments in the Katrina ravaged Ninth Ward in New Orleans.

On Tuesday, May 31, 2011, the WLD celebrated the 30th anniver-sary of the U.S. Supreme Court Swearing-In Ceremony, which was held at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. The Movant was the Honorable Bernice B. Donald, Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. After the swearing-in ceremony, Justice Ruth Ginsburg came to the

WLD reception area to congratulate and take photos with the 34 newly admit-ted NBA members of the Supreme Court Bar (including WLD Chair, DeMonica D. Gladney). The WLD also hosted a luncheon for the inductees and their guests at the Cosmos Club, and Judge Donald gave an inspiring keynote ad-dress to the group. After the program, the Committee Chair, Iris McCollum Green, joined by the WLD Chair and Committee members, presented Judge

Donald with an award for her outstanding service.

Spring 2011

On April 10, 2011 during the NBA 31st Mid-Year Conference at The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, the WLD co-sponsored a CLE program entitled, ―Old Rules, New Medium: What Lawyers Need to Remember When Using Social Media,‖ with the NBA Young Lawyers Division. The speaker was Monty Agarwal, Partner at Arnold & Porter, LLP in San Francisco. The CLE was well attended and included a

discussion on the dangers of lawyers using social media, including topics such as the duty of confidentiality and creating the attorney-client relationship. Fol-lowing the CLE, the WLD held a Board meeting, which was open to current and prospective members. The WLD Chair, DeMonica Gladney, presided over the meeting, which included the Chair’s and Committees’ reports and an up-date on the WLD events for the NBA 86th Annual Convention in Baltimore.

WLD Adopts the Sister Soldiers Project

WLD Celebrates 30th Anniversary of U.S. Supreme Court

The WLD launched its ―Adopt-A-Project‖ program and the Board voted to adopt the ―Sister Soldiers Project,‖ which was born out of a desire to send ―care pack-ages‖ with various ethnic personal care products to the brave women serving our nation and give them a small taste of their ―normal‖ lives back home. Since 2006, nearly 4,000 packages have been shipped to ―Sister Soldiers‖ aided by women’s groups. During the WLD Board meeting at the 31st Mid-Year Confer-ence, the WLD members gave an initial contribution of $150 for the project. The WLD will continue the fundraising efforts for the project.

In addition to the WLD’s membership recruitment and communication efforts, the WLD also focused on fulfilling my second initiative to increase the visibility of the WLD in the community this year. As WLD Chair, I attended the following meetings and events that the WLD Board voted for me to attend as representative for the WLD, and these activi-ties helped us to reach our goal of greater exposure for the WLD in our community.

White House Holiday Reception

On December 15, 2010, I attended the White House Holiday Reception hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington, D.C. The holiday reception was held in the Grand Foyer of the White House, and President Obama delivered remarks to the crowd of guests and wished everyone happy holidays. I was honored to meet President Obama after the reception.

National Black Law Students Association’s 43rd

Annual Convention

On March 12, 2011, I attended the NBLSA’s 43rd Annual Con-vention in Houston, including the E. Leon Higginbotham Lunch-eon. I was also a panelist on the In-House Counsel Roundta-ble, which included a workshop panel for law students that dis-cussed life as an in-house counsel and how it compares to work in a law firm, the government, and other legal fields. The moderator of the panel was John Page (Golden State Foods), and the other panelists included Vicki Blanton (American Air-lines), and Angela Cox (United Way).

Center for Women in Law Consortium Meeting & Women’s Power Summit

On April 27, 2011, I attended the Consortium for Advancing Women Lawyers, which was hosted by the Center for Women in Law (CWL) at the Four Sea-son Hotel in Austin. The Executive Director of CWL, Linda Bray Chanow, hosted the Consortium meeting, which included lead-ers from various women lawyers associations and the ABA President-Elect, Laurel Bellows. After the reports on research findings and initiatives, I presented a report on the mission and current activities of the WLD. In conjunction with the meeting, I also attended the two-day Women’s Power Summit, which ex-

plored how women lawyers can attain and exercise power for themselves and on behalf of other women. The summit was well attended and included judges, law school deans, general counsel, law firm managing partners, which led to a very interesting discussion.

WLD Chair Appointed Liaison to ABA Commission on Women in the Profession

After my participation in the CWL’s Consortium meeting, the Chair of the ABA Commis-sion on Women in the Profession, Roberta D. Lienbenberg, appointed me as the WLD Liaison to the Commission for a one-year term. The Commission has served as a na-tional voice for women lawyers and has led the efforts to overcome the obstacles imped-ing the advancement of women in the profession. As Liaison, I am responsible for help-ing to build a working relationship between the WLD and the Commission and to foster collaborative projects between the groups.

CHAPTER 4 WLD’s Annual Retreat The WLD will host its Annual Retreat from 3:00 pm-7:00 pm on Sunday, July 31, 2011, at the Renais-sance Hotel. The theme is "Girls Just Want to Have Fun...And a Loving Partner Wouldn’t Hurt!!" This year’s retreat will focus on relationships for single and married women. Our goal is to help build strong black families, and we have partnered with the 100 Black Men of Balti-

more to make this a phenomenal event. The retreat will include networking activi-ties with the 100 Black Men, ―pillow talk‖ for women, tips from a relationship coach, a dating and newlywed game, dancing and much more. WLD's CLE Program On Monday, August 1, 2011 from 8:00 am - 9:30 am, the WLD will host a CLE entitled, ―Outside the Box: Exploring the Role and Impact of Women Lawyers, Al-ternative Career Options and Ethical Considerations." The speakers will include: Chanelle Hardy (Sr. Vice President & Executive Director of National Urban League Policy Institute), Cherri Branson (Chief Counsel for Oversight House Homeland Security), Youshea Berry (Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Landrieu), Angela Rye (Executive Director/General Counsel, Congressional Black Caucus), and Monica Sanders (Republican Counsel, House Committee on Homeland Security).

WLD’s Annual Networking & Awards Breakfast On Tuesday, August 2, 2011 from 7:00 am - 9:00 am, the WLD will host its 39th Annual Networking & Awards Break-fast at the Hilton Baltimore. The theme is ―We Do It Better Together.‖ The keynote speaker for the breakfast will be Rev. Marcia L. Dyson, political strategist, social activist and spiritual advisor. The program will include presentation of the Distinguished Scroll and the Jurist of the Year Awards. At the close of the program, the incoming WLD officers and

WLD's Annual "Respect Yourself" Mentor Program The WLD will host its Third Annual ―Respect Yourself‖ Mentor Pro-gram on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm. The guest speaker will be Judge Mablean Ephriam. This year, the WLD has partnered with My Sister’s Circle (MSC), which is a comprehensive, relationship-based program designed to men-tor girls from disadvantaged Baltimore neighborhoods during their challenging transition to middle school, high school, and college.

MSC helps to positively transform the lives of our ―sisters‖ by matching each girl with a mentor; providing one-on-one tutoring; organizing cultural, educa-tional and recreational events; soliciting summer camp scholarships; and offer-ing testing and counseling through the middle and high school application proc-ess; and connecting students with college preparation and placement pro-grams. Today, the program serves over 100 girls, ranging from fifth through twelfth grades, that are enrolled in approximately 40 middle and high schools.

As a part of the WLD’s initiative to increase its visibility in the community, the WLD Board voted for the WLD to partner with other women lawyers and other associations and to participate in the following programs.

GABWA Joins WLD’s U.S. Supreme Court Swearing-in Ceremony & Hosts Celebration Dinner

The President, Jamala S. McFadden, and members of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA) participated as a group in this year’s U.S. Supreme Court Swearing-In Ceremony on May 31, 2011 in Washington, D.C. The GABWA hosted a celebration dinner on May 29, 2011 at the Art & Soul Restaurant, and the WLD Chair, DeMonica Gladney, and WLD Board member, Erika Akinyemi, attended as special guests.

WLD Co-Sponsors ABA’s Road to Independence Program

The WLD will co-sponsor the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession’s pro-gram entitled, ―The Road to Independence: Women’s Journeys to Starting Their Own Law Firms,‖ which will be held from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm on Friday, August 5, 2011 at the InterContinental Toronto Centre in Toronto, Canada. The Commission’s newest publication, The Road to Independence, recounts the experiences and insights of 101 women lawyers who have taken the courageous and difficult step of creating a law firm of their own, either as a solo or with others. Panelists will discuss why an increas-ing number of women are opting to create their own law firms and will share practical advice and lessons learned. This program will serve as a catalyst and inspiration for any woman lawyer contemplating the possibility of blazing her own trail to success and fulfillment. The moderator of the panel will be Marsha E. Simms, and the panel-ists will include: Amanda Green Alexander, Julie I. Fershtman, Georgialee A. Lang, Roberta D. Liebenberg (Chair of ABA Commission on Women in the Profession), and Karen M. Lockwood.

ABA’s 2011 Margaret Brent Awards Luncheon Honors NBA Past President Paulette Brown

The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession will present the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award on August 7, 2011 during ABA Annual Meet-ing in Toronto, Canada. The award, established in 1991, honors outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence in their area of specialty and have actively paved the way to success for others. NBA’s Past President Paulette Brown will be honored along with five other recipients—Eleanor Dean Acheson, Karen Mathis, Colonel Maritza Ryan, and the Right Honorable Madame Chief Justice Bever-ley McLachlin.

CHAPTER 6 The WLD Shares Results of Membership Drive The WLD officially kicked off its membership drive on April 15, 2011 with the goal of increasing our membership by at least 20% by June 1, 2011. After our 45-day membership drive, we were elated that the WLD’s membership had al-ready increased by almost 30%. We could not have achieved these results without help from our NBA family. We reached out to the NBA Board of Gover-nors, the NBA regional directors and affiliated Black women lawyers associa-tions to help us spread the word about the drive and can see the impact of working together. We are very pleased with these results and plan to continue our membership recruitment efforts for the WLD and the NBA. The WLD would like to extend a special thanks to the NBA family for their help with this effort. All NBA members (women and men) who are not members of the WLD can still join or renew their membership before or at the NBA 86th Annual Con-vention.

How to Join the WLD To become a member of the Women Lawyers Division, you must first join the National Bar Association. Both NBA and WLD dues may be paid online at the NBA website (http://www.nationalbar.org/membersignup.html) or by completing and mailing the NBA membership application with your dues to the NBA office. The annual membership dues for the Women Lawyers Division are $15.00. If you have any questions about your NBA or WLD membership status, please contact the NBA office at (202) 842-3900 for verification.

New WLD Membership Directory The WLD is in the process of developing a new membership directory for its members. The purpose of the directory is to serve as a tool for others to locate African-American women lawyers in specific locations and with expertise in specific practice areas for employment, board positions and business referrals. In addition, the directory is designed to enhance networking and other opportu-nities between WLD members. This is all about us helping each other because we are our sister’s keeper. For WLD members only, please complete the online membership directory form on the WLD website (www.nbawld.com), so you will be included in this great resource. We plan to publish the membership directory after this year’s NBA convention.

1. On August 5, 1971, nineteen NBA women lawyers held the first organiza-

tional meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

2. In 1972, the WLD was formed at the NBA Convention in Miami, Florida.

3. In 1974, the first local chapter of the WLD was organized in Washington,

D.C.

4. In 1975, the WLD sponsored its first seminar at the NBA Convention in

Washington, D.C.

5. On August 3, 1976, the WLD sponsored its first breakfast in Houston,

Texas.

She also recently released her new book, Identity Theft: Discovering The Real You, which was ranked #2 on the BCNN1/BCBC National Independent Publishers’ Top 50 Bestseller’s List.

Iris McCollum Green - Elected President of Washington Bar Assoc. On June 10, 2011 at the law firm of Reed Smith, WLD Parliamentarian, Iris McCollum Green, was sworn in for a second term as the 45th President of the NBA affiliate chapter, Washington Bar Association, and is the fifth female president in its 86 year history.

Vickie Carlton-Sadler’s – Opens Atlanta Office of Her New Law Firm In March 2011, WLD Board member, Vickie S. Carlton-Sadler, launched her new law firm, The Carlton-Sadler Law Group, LLC, in Atlanta, Georgia. Her firm is a female minority law firm providing legal services in the areas of commercial litigation, family law, personal injury and litigation support services. Ms. Carlton-Sadler will also be joining the faculty at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School as a Visiting Assistant Pro-fessor for a Civil Procedure course.

Sharon Strickland - Sworn-In as President of Cook County Bar Assoc. WLD Board member, Sharon Strickland, was installed as President of the NBA affili-ate chapter, Cook County Bar Association, on Friday, June 24, 2011 at the associa-tion’s 97th Awards & Installation Banquet at the Marriott Chicago.

Pamela Meanes - Accepts NBA “Region of the Year” Award WLD First Vice Chair and NBA Regional Director for Region VIII accepted the ―Region of the Year‖ Award on behalf of Region VIII at the First Plenary Session of the NBA 85th Annual Convention.

Antoinette Barksdale - Appointed WLD Liaison to NCNW WLD Board member, Antoinette Barksdale, was appointed by the WLD Board to serve as the WLD Liaison to the NCNW for the 2010-2011 term. The NCNW is an organiza-tion of national African American women’s organizations and community based sec-tions.
