National Assessment OverviewGeorgia Department of EducationEnd-of-Pathway Assessment (Perkins IV Core Indicator 2S1)
“Georgia…has worked in recent years to establish a measurement mechanism to ascertain the level of technical skill attainment on behalf of its career pathway completers. Georgia’s measurement process has been derived in direct response to the Perkins IV Legislation…which mandates states to implement a valid and reliable assessment model linked directly to industry validated standards.”

National Assessment Overview
The assessment tool for Broadcast Video Production Pathway Completers is the
Television Video Production component of the
SkillsUSA Work Force Ready System.
National Assessment Overview
• Students take the Television Video Production assessment online
• Individual tests consist of 50 questions from a pool of 200 questions
• Many questions utilize interactive multimedia
• Designed by a Technical Advisory Committee consisting of Teachers, Federal Policy Makers, Industry Representatives and more.

National Assessment Overview
Assessment Pricing
SkillsUSA Members: (Registered students / professionals who have paid the current school year membership dues.)
$10 per assessment for the total number of SkillsUSA members in your school.
$20 per assessment once your school has exceeded the membership price allotment.
Non-SkillsUSA Members: (School or organization that has not paid SkillsUSA membership dues.)
$20 per assessment.

GPS vs. National Assessment
• While many concepts covered in the Workforce Readiness assessment cannot be found directly in our Georgia Performance Standards, most of the concepts can be derived from them.
• By using the assessment as a learning opportunity for ourselves and our students we are able to enhance a standard by fostering a higher level of knowledge surrounding each GPS.
Time for Action!
The cut score for the assessment is 65%
Shaw High School’s average:
52.05%
Georgia state average:

National average:

GPS vs. National Assessment
Many national assessment questions deal with photography (not videography) concepts.
Teaching students more in depth concepts creates opportunities for those students to not only meet, but exceed a GPS such as: ACCT-BVP2-2. Students will exhibit proper use of field equipment and its functions.
By learning how and why the camera works students are better able to produce more creative and technically advanced projects.
Today’s concepts fall into the following categories:
TV Engineering
Color Temperature & White Balance
Photography & Lenses
What does it do?
Vectorscope
What is this?
Vectorscopes are used to measure chrominance (color information) in a video signal.
What does it do?
Waveform Monitor
What is this?
Waveform Monitors are used to measure the luminance (brightness) of a video signal.
Interlaced Scanning
Each frame of video consists of two fields – the even and odd. Two fields are put together to create a complete frame of video.
Progressive Scanning
Instead of splitting each frame into two fields, progressive scanning scans the entire image one line at a time.
This makes for a “smoother” picture, but requires more bandwidth.
Put the following in ascending order based on color temperature:
Noon Day Sun Fluorescent Bulb
Overcast Sky Household Light Bulb
Put the following in ascending order based on color temperature:
1. Household Light Bulb2. Fluorescent Bulb3. Noon Day Sun4. Overcast Sky

WHY?
Put the following in ascending order based on color temperature:
1. Household Light Bulb2. Fluorescent Bulb3. Noon Day Sun4. Overcast Sky
WHY?Different elements “burn” at different temperatures…
Why is this important?
For a long time, knowing your color temperatures was necessary to capture video that contained accurate color values.

Now, with better technology, many people use the Auto White Balance setting on their camera and never notice a problem.

Difficult lighting situations can cause Auto White Balance to produce “shifting” – that’s why you should always custom white balance.
Why is this important?
Remember that “white light” contains “all the colors of the rainbow”. Therefore, if you tell the camera’s computer what “white” looks like under a certain lighting condition, the camera will know how to adjust all the color levels so you get accurate video/photos.

Bad white balancing means video/photos with bad color.

Several factors affect depth of field (the area of the shot in focus) including exposure.
Allowing more light to enter the lens helps to create a narrow/tight depth of field.
Which lens is best suited for a wide angle/large depth of field shot?
A) 500mmB) 15mmC) 250mmD) 130mm
Which lens is best suited for a wide angle/large depth of field shot?
A) 500mm
B) 15mmC) 250mmD) 130mm
The millimeter measurement refers to the focal length of the lens.
The smaller the measure, the closer the lens elements can be to one another, resulting in a wide angle shot with a large depth of field.
Keep in mind that wide angle lenses can also be utilized to capture shots with a tight depth of field. The ability to place the camera close to the subject helps create a tight depth of field. Using the infinity focus setting, however, results in a large depth of field.
The photograph below was taken with which shutter speed?A) 1/4000 B) 1/4 C) 1/400 D) 1/2000
Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second. “Slower” shutter speeds result in blurring. Using shutter speeds effectively and/or creatively greatly enhances photographs and video.
The larger the value, the slower the shutter speed which allows for shooting with little to no light – but creates motion blurring.

Think, Pair, Share
Directions:
Take a few minutes to brainstorm creative learning techniques we can use to teach new concepts.
Then, find a partner, brainstorm further and write down ideas.
Finally, present your ideas to the group.
