his project had been completed by CAS around the time I was hired. The client had not allowed our photographer to document our

work prior to move-in. Thus the photos were unsatisfactory as employees had cluttered the spaces with their belongings when photographs were taken. My task was to create renderings which would bring to life the design in it’s full glory, before value engineering reduced its attractiveness. Using SketchUp, Vray and Photoshop I created a sequence of images for our marketing department to use in lieu of photographs.

developer in Palo Alto hired us to renovate some space in an office building on University Ave. The existing space looked so bad that finding a tenant

by showing photos of it was a long shot. He asked for some interior renderings that would be good enough to attract some renters and accurately depict the future interior environment. I created a series of images using all the products specified in the job. We sent the images to his realtors and received a call later that day congratulating us because the space had been rented. These renderings were created by modeling and texturing in SketchUp, rendering in Vray and post processing in Photoshop.

ynaptics hired us to design their new world headquarters in San Jose. They previously owned bui ldings strewn across the

neighborhood and were excited when 3 buildings became available, all next door to each other. We submittal images of our p r o p o s e d d e s i g n a n d w o n t h e competition. I created these images for the client to use in their marketing material and for our own in-house design critique. These 3d models were made in Sketchup and would become the basis for our construction documents. We needed low grade renderings for the planning process, where these models were again used. !!!!!!!!!!

ur client was interested in seeing perspective drawings during design development, especially for material

selection purposes. This was before my firm switched to Revit software, which meant maintaining 2 parallel digital mediums, SketchUp & AutoCAD. This proved time consuming but also ultimately proved the benefits of having 3d during these phases, which led to my firm’s switch to Revit Architecture. My part in this project was the creation and management of 3D models and presentation materials. I worked closely with the associates to develop the designs and select finishes and furniture. I also worked with the team to develop details, sections and elevations for the construction documents. During construction administration I edited specs and submittals to ensure our design intent was realized. Below are a few render vs. photo comparisons that illustrate how my models can give a clear understanding of the design.!!

!Below are more examples of the extent of modeling I typically do for a design development phase, followed by line drawing style images more typical of a schematic design phase. I find that adding color too early causes clients to get hung up on the subject of finishes when they should be considering layout. Also, the sketch feel of the graphics don’t cause them to panic over the amount of completion they perceive.

uilding design is an area of the architecture industry we at CAS do not practice regularly. Our business was comprised of roughly 95% Interior tenant

improvements. The experience I did have with designing ground-up buildings would primarily be with Synaptics and BioMed Realty. Synaptics was and exterior “face-lift” to 3 buildings in San Jose. BioMed is a project we designed and took through the planning department in South San Francisco so that the project would be approved when a tenant was found. We have not begun construction documents yet. During design on Synaptics (right/top) I was tasked with creating 3D models for design consideration and presentation from the proposal stage all the w a y t h r o u g h d e s i g n development. There are many places where I needed to fill in

gaps in the design. These models were translated line for line into the construction drawings. You can see more renderings of Synaptics in section I. Architectural Visualization. BioMed is a new biotech campus in South San Francisco, where I helped prepare renderings

and material boards for the planning department. The renderings were also used for BioMed’s marketing purposes. Below are elevations of Synaptics & BioMed, followed by renderings of BioMed. !

onstruction documents are the number one task I as a drafter am responsible for. It is also the least exciting thing to show in a portfolio. I have included a few

examples of residential and commercial drawings in order to illustrate the drawing style I have been trained with. Of course, please ask to see some 1/2 size sets if you would like to see more. The residential project shown is a private residence in Los Altos built with Insulated Building Blocks and a combination of wood and metal studs. The design is an Italian style with clay tile roofs and stone balustrades lining the balconies. The commercial project shown is a building in San Jose built on the existing steel structure. The design is a modern style with metal panel and glass curtain walls creating long runs of glass punctuated by rectilinear metal elements and angular lines. I’ve included wall sections and details for both projects to emphasize the level of detail we typically design to. Most of our projects include restroom and parking redesign for ADA compliance. Stairs & handrails seem to always make it into that category as well, so I’ve gained lots of experience in these critical areas. I work

with a principle architect on every job which has given me a keen eye for details and readability.
