“I see landscape architecture as a connection between multiple different fields that can help create better places for people.

It allows people to connect with natural spaces allowing for rehabilitation, rejuvenation, and restoration.

While providing for people, landscape architecture must also continue to provide continued care of the environment, site sustainability, and ecological

stewardship. “

Bell Bluff, inspired by the rising bluffs of the Des Moines River valley right outside of town, creates a multi-purpose space for gathering, events, concerts, movies, as well as a didactic learning experience. After 56 large bells were gifted to the community of 12,000, the community searched for a way to display the bells downtown. Located at the main intersection of town, this bluff both displays the bells as a museum, but also serves a secondary purpose of risen space for events, concerts and other performances.

The space created by flagstone pavers and grass provides a solid surface for events and exhibitions, while allowing for a soft surface that is permeable. This space would become the new location of the towns farmers market.

The grassy slope of the hill provides soft area for relaxation during the day, while also allowing seating space for a potential program of outdoor movies projected onto the building facade next door.

The rock outcroppings throughout the site served as inspiration towards developing a recreational area on a 265-acre site.

Page 12: Nate Byro's Landscape Architecture Portfolio

The Maquoketa community seeked the Iowa State College of Design to help develop a master plan and programming for a 265-acre area left for a regional park. Very adamant on providing equestrian trails for the county, I focused on developing an area for equestrian camping and unloading.

With large topographical changes, it was a challenge to grade flat enough spaces into the hill top without large movements of earth. Through the process, a mound was created between the parking areas.

The center mound and surrounding area will be restored to an oak-savanna. This would provide feed for the horses, while also returning the site into a native system. The mound then acts as a sound buffer to protect from noises and wind.

sensitive environments| artistic interpretation, construction documentationla 302 | spring 2014 | iowa state university

After a thorough study of photos of the Half-Mile line by Reed-Hilderbrand, I developed construction documentation of how small detail of the project developed the success of the project. The project is the development of a boardwalk that makes the smallest impact on the ecosystem, while connecting people into two separate ecosystems.

The site my installation occurred in was between two very different ecosystems: the quite reading room and the loud atrium. Focusing in on the Iowa environment, I decided to provide separation between the two environments through a endangered ecosystem in Iowa: the tallgrass prairie.

Peshtank Park, Susquehannock for “where the water stands,” developed from many opportunities, as well as a need for an open park space from the community. An expanse of empty parking lots and empty areas led to towards further exploration of the area. It developed as the anchor of the Bridge to Bridge dis-trict. As 10th Street redevelops, it directs people to continue down into Peshtank

Park. It provides a resting stop, or a connec-tion past the railroad through the addition of a pedestrian bridge under the railroad and above the creek. The area connects back into the surrounding communities through one of the few connections up into the Allison Hill community. The Mulberry Viaduct provides excellent access to the area. The people from the island portion of the city have access through Market Street and 10th Street.

A park was in desperate need in this area for the people to have recreation, as well as relax. There was also a need to provide a way to deal with excess water from rain and flooding events. With the expanse of open space, this area seemed perfect towards preventing some of the effects of flooding. The creek would be broken free of the concrete walls, and allowed to meander through the site. The terraces to the creek would all be dug

down, creating greater space for flooding.
