The pictures below show several types of localcraftsmanship, made up of different materials.The cribs are the result of the creativeness ofcraftsmen, that exhibited their artistic works inBeato Giacomo’s Church in Bitetto (a little townnear Bari), in the Church of SS. Medici in BariVecchia, in the Cathedral and in Bari Vecchia(the old town district).

Le statuine dei presepi artigianali dell ’area barese e dellaPuglia sono prevalentemente costruite, utilizzando duemateriali: la cartapesta e la terracotta.Di seguito è presentata una breve descrizione di come sirealizzano questi due materiali.

The statues and the characters of the craft cribs, made inBari and in Apulia, are mostly built in carton-pierre (papermâché) and in terracotta.In the following paragrafhs there are the instructions of howwe can make these materials.

CA R TA PESTA

La cartapesta è un materiale derivato dalla carta, con cui si è soliti costruire statuine di Natale, maschere di Carnevale. Una volta decorata somiglia al legno ed alla ceramica. COSA SER V E PER F A R E LA CA R TA PESTA : carta:giornali vecchi, carta da fotocopie, colla tipo Vinavil, colori a tempera. COM E SI F A LA CA R TA PESTA :

◦ Taglia i fogli di carta. ◦ Metti i pezzetti di carta in un secchio, coperti d'acqua tiepida e lasciali riposare una notte. ◦ ◦ Fai bollire per 20 minuti la carta ◦ Riduci in poltiglia con un frullino elettrico o una frusta. ◦ Versa la poltiglia in un setaccio per eliminare l'acqua. ◦ Strizza la poltiglia, ma senza eccedere. ◦ Metti l’impasto ottenuto in un recipiente e aggiungi 2 cucchiai da cucina colmi di colla bianca, un po’ di sale. Mescola il tutto fino a ottenere un composto omogeneo. ◦ Spalma strato per strato (almeno tre) sulla superficie o l’intelaiatura da ricoprire con le mani o con la spatola, fino a coprirla completamente. ◦ Lascia asciugare bene all’aria o in un frigorifero. ◦ Decora a piacere.

CA R TON -PI ER R E A N D PA PI ER -M A CH É

Papier-mâché is a construction material, made out of pieces of paper, with which craftsmen build Christmas Crib’s characters, statues, Carnival masks. When painted and decorated, it looks like wood and ceramic.

M A TER I A LS N EED ED : paper, old newspapers, copy paper, polyvinyl glue, colours (tempera) I N STR U CTI ON S:

◦ Tear the newspaper into tiny pieces and put them in a bowl. ◦ Add just enough warm water to completely cover the newspaper. Let soak overnight. ◦ Boil the paper for about 20 minutes. ◦ Boil the paper for about 20 minutes. ◦ Mix it with a mixer or a blender. ◦ Pour the paste into a sieve and squeeze off any excess water. ◦ Pour the paste into a container and add 2 tablespoons of glue and some salt. ◦ Mix it again and begin to stick. ◦ Stick the newspaper strip over the mould you want to papermaché and smooth it down with your fingers or with a putty knife. Cover your creation with a layer of newspaper strips. They should all be over-lapping. Add one layer at a time (at least three layers). ◦ Let it dry open air or in a refrigerator. ◦ Paint, decorate it at will.

TER R A COTTA

La terracotta è un tipo di ceramica, dal colore che va dal giallo al rosso mattone, grazie alla presenza di argilla e di ferro (sotto forma di ossidi) al suo interno. È un materiale composto, modellabile, che si può facilmente lavorare prima della cottura, ma rigido e fragile dopo la cottura. Con la terracotta si producono diversi oggetti, quali vasellame, statuine del presepe, maschere di Carnevale. È usato anche nei rivestimenti (tegole, mattoni, ecc.).

COM E SI F A LA TER R A COTTA ◦ Prendi l’argilla, versa un po’ d’acqua ed impasta; ◦ modella, dandone la forma desiderata; ◦ metti a cuocere l’oggetto nel forno; ◦ infine decora con la tempera.

The terracotta is a kind of ceramic. It can be yellow or brick red (it depends on the presence of clay and iron). It is a composite material, malleable, easily shapeable before kiln-drying, but hard and fragile when kiln-dried. Craftsmen manufacture lots of objects, such as pottery, Christmas statues, Carnival masks. It is used as well as bricks and roofing tiles. M A TER I A LS N EED ED : M A TER I A LS N EED ED :

◦ take some clay, pour some water and mix; ◦ mould into the shape you want, smoothing down with your fingers or with putty knikes; ◦ dry in a kiln, ◦ paint and decorate at will.

Gli alumni della I I B si sono cimentati nella costruzione di statuine. The students of I I B have tried to mould the terracotta into Christmas Crib’s statues.
