On behalf of the North American Shagya-Arabian Society (NASS), I am pleased to serve as your President again for 2009-2010. I am honored to serve our organization in this role and I am grateful for the excellent Board of Directors, Regional Directors, Committee Members and Volunteers who serve with me.

The Board has been working on short-term initiatives and long-term goals throughout the past year and will do the same in the coming year. We are excited about the growth and continuity of NASS these past two years and continue to promote the quality and perseverance of the integrity of the Shagya bloodline.

In reflection of this past year, which was an inspection year for NASS, I have met many NASS members and have made several new Shagya friends. The NASS Breeding Inspection Tour was a success and everyone had a wonderful time. It was a pleasure to meet Mr. Ahmed Al Samarraie and share our ideas and concerns about the Shagya breed both at home and abroad. A special THANK YOU to the 2009 NASS Judges for helping NASS make this a successful Breeding Inspection Tour! Your time and energy was most appreciated. Congratulations Owners and Breeders!

Proudly, the following horses have been added to the NASS list of horses approved for breeding: • 9 Purebred Shagya-Arabians approved for Mare Book I• 5 Part-Shagya-Arabians approved for Appendix to Mare Book I• 4 Purebred Shagya-Arabians approved for Stallion Book I• 1 Part-Shagya-Arabian stallion approved for Appendix to Stallion Book I• 2 Purebred Arabian mares approved for Appendix to Mare Book II

In addition: • 1 Purebred Shagya-Arabian gelding evaluation• 1 Purebred Shagya-Arabian filly evaluation• 2 Part-Shagya evaluations

The Breeding Committee’s main accomplishments during the year were to finalize Stallion Performance Requirements and to significantly alter the NASS Guidelines for Shagya Breeding in order to accommodate the RZBO. In particular, the NASS Guidelines now accommodate the Studbook II and its Appendixes and the eligibility of Purebred Arabian mares to be inspected and approved for breeding. This was a huge task and I thank our Breeding Committee for ac-complishing this.NASS has promoted the Shagya in a national magazine, “The Equine Journal”, spotlighting Shagyas in a monthly show-case article that will continue throughout 2010. NASS also promoted Shagyas in the “USDF Connection” magazine, sponsored Independent Breed Classes for the Kentucky Dressage Association and had a booth at the Iowa State Horse Fair. NASS will continue to promote the quality of Shagya-Arabians. This would not be possible without the support and generosity of the NASS Membership and private donors! THANK YOU!NASS Membership has grown significantly within the last year! For those who have stood by NASS for many years, New Members and those considering becoming a NASS Member - THANK YOU for supporting NASS as the Shagya organization that promotes not only the quality of the breed but is also working hard to preserve the integrity of the breed - I THANK YOU!

Finally, I look forward to continuing to serve as your President and working with your Board and Regional Directors. I wish the NASS Membership and your families a healthy and prosperous year. United in our efforts, we can accomplish our common goals. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any comments, questions or concerns you may have.

Monique Vincent and MJL Olivia

On November 13 and 15, 2009, I rode MJL Olivia (*Oman/MJL Stanz-Abi ox) in the AERC sanctioned three-day Renegade Pioneer ride. There was a good turnout for the ride including some big names such as Crockett Du-mas (over 34,000 lifetime miles, 79 100-mile starts with 71 completions), Christoph Schork (winner of Australia’s Quilty Cup in 2005; 7th place at the Kentucky pre-ride in October 2009; over 30 wins in the 2009 season), Michael Campbell (US Central team member at the 2002 Pan American Championship in 2002) and Garrette Ford (contender for the National Best Conditioned award for 2009) just to name a few.

On the first day of the three-day ride, Olivia gave a strong yet con-servative performance to finish fourth with an approximate ride time 4:55 over a 55-mile distance.

We were back on course two days later for the third day of the ride. The day started out with Olivia go-ing a bit faster than I wanted her to go. By the first water stop we were riding with Michael Camp-bell and Christoph Schork. I want-ed to slow down, so I gave Michael and Christoph four minutes to get ahead. But within about three min-utes Olivia and I had caught them.

The three of us rode together un-til the first vet check where I again gave them two minutes’ grace as I did not want to get caught up in their race. But once again, Olivia and I caught Michael and Christoph within about two minutes of leaving camp on our second loop. At the second water stop on the loop, I made another concerted effort to let the two guys get ahead of us. Once again we caught them within 2-3 minutes.

By this point, Olivia had made it clear to me what her intentions were for the day. So we went down the trail with Christoph and Michael. We were all very evenly matched throughout the second loop.

At the second vet check, Michael Campbell’s horse and Olivia pulsed in at the same time. Christoph’s horse pulsed in two minutes later. While we were resting, Mi-chael Campbell came up to me and shared that he did

not want to give this one away. He asked if I would ride with him with the goal of complet-ing before Christoph. By this point we had ten miles to go and any strategic error could result in a close race between the three of us. Of course I was in – who would not be?

When Kim, the timer, told Mi-chael and me that we could go, we took off at a full gallop down the trail. We galloped for about four miles to a gate that had to be opened and closed. Michael was a gentle-man and took care of the gate.

We were then off again as we could see Christoph trying to catch us. (This attempt was despite Randy Eiland, the ride manager, telling Christoph that we were much further ahead

than he realized.) Our horses knew that they were heading home. Even in the turtle trail, a technical section laden with deep sand, we really did not slow down. We did, however, slow down for the razor back as we had to ride the apex of a sandy hill that had significant drop-offs on either side.

We were then on the home stretch with only a few miles to go. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the re-flection of Christoph’s helmet as he went down the razor back. We then knew that he was hot on our tail, but we had at least three miles on him.

Michael and I got out of the deep ar-royo sand and on to the last hill before camp. We agreed to tie for first, as it had really been a team effort to stay ahead of Christoph. We crossed the finish line hand-in-hand just as the vets were driving into base camp. With a 90-minute hold, we completed the 55-mile ride in approximately four hours ride time with an average speed of 13.75 mph. Both horses looked good and trotted out sound for their com-pletion vet checks. What a great way to end the 2009 endurance season!

We’ve got lots of news to report, as it’s been an eventful fall!

First off, I’d like to congratulate new owners of horses from Adele’s Shag-yas! Our “Big Girl”, the two-year-old chestnut filly Royal Kapricia AF (Shagya Royal AF/Kadence DWB) traveled to her new home in Delphi Falls, New York, right next door to our NASS Registrar, Carol Neubauer! Kapricia’s new owner is Velda Ward, who was looking for a replacement for her imported Dutch Warmblood dressage gelding. Velda reports that Kapricia, who was already around 16.2 when she left here, has settled in well. Carol kindly brought me some snapshots of Kapricia and Velda to the Vermont inspection site so that I could see Kapricia, her owner, and her new home.

Next to depart was Shagya’s Sarabande AF (*Shandor/*Shagya II-2 by Shagya II), who went to be near her new owner Rebecca Blair the day after she was approved for breeding in Moiese. “Sara” is currently located near the border between Indiana and Kentucky, where Rebecca is going to college. Rebecca has been “lurking” around the Shagya world for some time now. I remember her writing me enthusiastic letters years ago when she was a junior high stu-dent. Rebecca has been involved in Arabian sport horse riding for a number of years, so Shagyas became the obvious breed of choice. Sara will always have a special place in my heart, as she is the last daughter of *Shandor. Re-becca has dressage and possibly eventing plans in Sara’s future.

Our NASS President, Jamie Buck, also took home a Shagya mare after the inspection. She talked me out of MJL Shagala, a bay *Shandor daughter bred by Melody Link, out of Melody’s Arabian mare MJL Jasmine by *Budapest AF. Shagala stands over 15.3 h. and has endurance riding in her future with Jamie. Hopefully she will also have some foals as well!

Our new newsletter editor, Jamie Brätt, is the proud new owner of Shagya Skamp AF (Janos/Samantha by *Amurath Samurai). Jamie and her husband visited Adele’s Shagyas in July. It was love at first sight for Jamie, I think. In fact, I think she fell in love with Skamp’s photo before she fell in love with the horse in person. Jamie decided to have Skamp inspected and came out to Adele’s Shagyas again to assist with inspection chores and to be pressed into service as our new newsletter editor! Skamp’s inspection scores certainly didn’t discourage her from making her final decision to take Skamp home, as he got an average of 7.75! Skamp is in training at Maple Ridge Farm with Lily and Gwyn Davis, along with my beautiful mare Sheherezade AF (*Shandor/Sapphire by *Oman). Come spring, Skamp will travel on to Jamie’s place and “Sherry” will come back to Montana as my dressage mare.

Also in training at Gwyn’s are two of my Part-Shagyas who are both for sale - the Starwalker son Holiday Star AF (Starwalker/Hologram DWB by *Roemer), and Hera AF (*Shandor/Heritance ATA by Habicht). Holiday has been wowing everybody at Maple Ridge with his easy rideability and willingness to jump over anything he’s asked to. In fact, Holiday has been champion or reserve champion at several local hunter shows in the Indiana area. Meanwhile, Hera AF was presented by Lily and Gwyn at a nearby ATA Trakehner inspection this summer and was accepted into the ATA “PSB” Studbook. She also is one of the first horses to be branded with their new emblem for approved Trakehner crosses - the “Half Antler” brand.

The other really big news at Adele’s Shagyas that all four of the stallions I presented at this year’s NASS Inspection were approved for breeding!

Now I have seven approved stallions at the farm. At this time, Shagya Royal AF (*Shandor/Rachelle AA by H. Bravo) and Starwalker (*Amurath Samurai/ *Kornelia by Koheilan I) are both at stud via live cooled semen as well as via frozen semen with Roy. This spring my plan is to begin offering Shagya Raja AF (Shagya Scherzo AF/Rachelle AA by H. Bravo), who was approved in 2006, and Onyx AF (Janos/MJL Shaleez by *Shandor) at stud via live cooled semen. They will both stand at a reduced introductory fee once we have taught them to be collected, have had a chance to test their semen and make sure that it ships well. Onyx AF will not do a performance test, because he will never be athletically sound due to an injury he received when ten days old. He was apparently kicked in the stifle and the subsequent surgery revealed that 50 percent of one of his stifle ligaments was destroyed. Unfortunately, there is no known way to repair such an injury. This type of injury usually results in necessary euthanasia for an adult horse. However, because Onyx was so young, the attending veterinarians felt that we ought to give him a chance at life. Amazingly, Onyx gets around very well, even receiving all “7’s” for his gaits at inspection. Onyx’s limitation is that he cannot bring his left hind leg fully forward and the stifle joint will never be completely stable, since that is the job the ligaments perform. But somehow Onyx manages--his next test will be to see if he can mount a breeding phantom.

Another big project is going to be accomplishing the newly-instituted stallion performance tests for the other three newly-approved stallions. So far, we have estab-lished a plan for *Hadban USA (Harapnik/*Irahna-453 by Amos). *Hadban, who is already six years old, will be started under saddle in January. Later in the season, Monique Vincent will take the reins and *Hadban will participate in some AERC endurance rides. According to NASS Breeding Guideline regulations, a stallion must successfully complete five endurance rides and at least three of them must be 50 miles or more. As *Hadban comes along with his training and conditioning, we will keep you informed as to his AERC ride schedule. Since the other recently approved stallions, Nikolas Royale AF, aka “Nik” (Shagya Royal AF/*Niobe by Balaton) and Nicolette’s Revelation, aka “Revel” (Shagya Royal AF/*Nicolette by O’Bajan I-10) are both only three years old and essentially big babies, we have some time to plot their course for performance testing. *Hadban, “Nik” , and “Revel” will not be at stud until at least 2011.

Not the best of autumns – when I was at the inspection in Montana in September, I received an early morning emergency call from my vet – (WS) Emilagra (*Shandor/Echo Daal by H. Bravo) had severe colic and was at the clinic - my choice was to operate or put her down. She had colic surgery two years ago (displaced large colon) – now it was twisted and she was critical. With some moral support from Adele, I opted for surgery – the plan was to take out her entire large intestine, a risky surgery which car-ried a 30 percnt mortality risk, but which, if successful, could enable a complete recovery. Being a tough Shagya, she survived – is back under saddle after a three-month layup, and seems to be fine. Fortunately, my vet had just hired a board-certified surgeon from Kentucky – she told me this problem was not uncommon in broodmares and also not uncommon to have and survive two colic surgeries – I never was aware of this until now. As we had been gearing up for USDF Regionals in October, “Milagra” was in peak condition, and they credited this with her very rapid recovery. They said she might need more feed, since she no longer had her large intestine to digest hay, but she seems to be doing fine on her regular ration. I was extremely disappointed to miss Regionals, but grateful to still have my special mare. We plan on showing at first level in 2010. Just thought I would share our experience in case anyone else has faced this and has any helpful advice.

On a happier note, I got an update on Shagya’s Sprite (*Shandor/*Shagya II-2 by Shagya II). This high performance eventing/dressage mare owned by Gretchen Aycock had a career-ending injury to her SI joint last spring and was be-ing retired to a career as a part-time hunt horse in Texas. She made it as far as Gretchen’s sister’s hunter/jumper barn in Dallas, where she had been the Dallas winter circuit children’s jumper champion last winter. Gretchen’s sister decided she had to keep her on as a school horse, so she is “rehabbing” and being used as a lesson horse for the youngsters. Sprite already has been to several shows in the walk/trot classes, safely shepherding her young charges around. She gets pasture turnout at night, small children fussing over her all day, and has a life that we who knew her in her wild younger years never envisioned for “flighty Spritey”. So with steady light exercise and lots of good pasture, we are hoping that she might make a good recovery – who knows, but she obviously is in the perfect place right now!

Meanwhile, “Milagra’s” part-Shagya daughter, WS Elodie (Feuertanzer ATA/(WS) Emilagra by *Shandor) has been started under saddle with Gretchen. I have been riding her on the weekends - happy to report the unflappable Sha-gya half of her has seemed to come out with training. Elodie has been to one show, one clinic, and on the trail and behaved very well for a young green mare. Her serious show career will commence next spring.

Best wishes for a warm and cozy winter and an EARLY spring!!

We hope everyone had a good winter!!! The last snow disappeared two days ago on our ranch, all summer birds are arrived, the horses have short shiny hair again (when they don’t take a mud bath) and now we are enjoy-ing our Murad/Dahri foal and three little calves. This is our first mix between Angus and Dexter cows and we are excited.

Our horse herd is still the same size and we do have still three horses for sale. The foal named RAA’s Dahmu (*Murad/*Dahri by D’Artagnan) also will be for sale later this year.

Our horses are CEM free. Because of this, we cannot take U.S. mares for breeding this year. We are sorry. Have a great spring and summer.

Hi everyone!

Well, we did it - Shagya Emir AF (Shagya Scherzo AF/Echo Daal by H. Bravo) and I had our show debut this past spring/summer. It was modest, but successful, despite the very rainy wet season we had. We started out with a small schooling show at the end of May and finished with our first USDF show in Mason City, at the end of June. In July, we went on vaca-tion to Chicago and visited art and science museums to our hearts’ content. In August we were busy trying to get hay put up. I was going to try to go to a couple of shows in Septem-ber and October, but guess what? Yours Truly put her back out: dislocated my sacrum to be exact - owwwwwie. My chiropractor put it back in place, and then I spent nearly two months with physical therapy exercises trying to get the muscles to unlock and loosen up. About the time that happened, and I was able to ride again, it started to rain. We had maybe six dry days the whole month of October.

But anyway! Emir and I ended up with one reserve high score at Training Level at a schooling show (72 percent or something like that) in really sloppy footing). I was very proud of him; he was so careful and such a good boy. Mason City was actually a weekend of two shows - "Dressage Lite I and II”. We ended up with first place in both our intro classes - one of which was a 69 percent, with a fourth in Training I and a fifth in Training II. Since this was a big show with nearly 20 horses in each class, I was thrilled.

As soon as it stopped raining, which was around the beginning of November, I took Emir to Missy Fladland (our coach) for a couple of months of solid schooling, since we have now run out of daylight and I can only ride on weekends. . . she is going to get those canter departs a bit more crisp and uphill, and begin more serious First Level work. By the next show season, we should be able to show both Training and First Level. I am going to try for an USDF all breeds award. Wish us luck!!!

In the meantime, we have been driving Florence (Baron AF/Flora AA by H. Bravo) and took her to a driving clinic in Ames at the end of August. There is a nice driving barn there called "Three G Farms" run by a delightful couple, Earl Morris and Mary Winter. They gave me some very valuable hitching and driving trips, and they loved Flow, wanted to know what breed she was, etc. I had a wonderful opportunity to expound on the virtues of Shagyas. He told me that Flow was the best horse there. I was thrilled, since there were some very nice horses of all breeds at this clinic. He thought she might have serious potential as a competitive combined driving horse. Now if only I could win the lottery so I could quit my job and focus on horses full time. . .

Cosmos Whitner, aka “Count” (Shagya Sun/Ravenwood Cresent ox by Saud El Ameer ox) is still hanging in there. Unfor-tunately the shock wave treatment did not seem to help much, so I'm resigned to mostly trying to keep him as com-fortable as possible.

Happy spring, everybody!!!

Hi everyone - here’s what's happening with me and Shanny. Shannon, 17 h. black part-Shagya gelding by *Shandor out of Lillian, and I tried again at USDF Training Level and missed All Breeds and/or Vintage Cup Awards by a half a point and one judge. It was frustrating and disap-pointing, but Shanny and I are improving every year. We discovered he loves to jump. I wanted at least a solid training level dressage before we started eventing - close enough. We are going to try for our first event and/or HT in May in Montana, then there are a few more in the summer and fall in Wyoming. Wish us luck! We didn't get in as much trail riding in the hills this year as we would have liked but we did get out a few times. I'll try and forward some photos. Hope everyone had a good year with their wonderful Shagyas. Happy new year!

Last year my 11-year-old gelding Rennaissance (Almos/Ramona AF by *Oman) and I completed the 50-mile endurance ride at Oregon 100 (barefoot by the way). “Renn” had not been on an endurance ride for three years, so I was very happy that he did well and was a lot of fun to ride. Several people were awed by his ground-covering trot as we passed them out on the trail. I was, too. Renn’s younger brothers Rhuidean, aka “Rudy” (Bold Bravo AF/Ramona AF by) and Rising Star, aka “Ringo” (Starwalker/Ramona AF by *Oman) had busy summers get-ting trained with the basics. At the end of the summer, Rudy was in-troduced to a rider so that he will have that experience when he starts lessons again in the spring/summer. At a year and a half, Ringo has just about passed Rudy in height and is clearly on his way towards 16 h. They are such individuals, but all sweet, good-natured horses. For now, Ringo is intact and both youngsters are available for purchase. (See photos in Sales section.)

It was another busy year for Kerrigan Bloodstock in 2009. Unfortunately, things did not start out very well. In Feb-ruary, I lost the beautiful filly, KB Sigal Fahim (KB Omega Fahim+++//ox/Sophie AF by *Shandor). Shagya’s Serena AF (*Shandor/*Shagya II-2 by Shagya II) was in foal to KB Omega Fahim+++//ox, but sadly, she was not able to deliver her colt and he passed away in the attempt. She has changed her career and is now my very enjoyable riding mare.

KB Salim Fahim ox gave me another spectacular black filly by Shagya Royal AF, named KB Sitka Fahim (photo on New to the Herd section). “Sally” was also presented for inspection at

the 2009 NASS inspection here in Eureka, CA. Sally was accepted with the impressive score of 8. Her 2008 black filly by Shagya Royal AF, KB Sequoia Fahim, received the highest score on the inspection tour - 8.25. “Sally” is retired now, enjoying life on a small ranch in Oregon, owned by my brother, and is a favorite on the weekly trail rides.

Samantha (*Amurath Samurai/*Kornelia by Koheilan I) gave me my next riding/show horse by KB Omega Fahim+++//ox. I have high hopes for this stunning black filly, KB Sierra Fahim, as a future purebred Shagya-Arabian dressage champion. (The day after writing this farm news, “Sierra” passed away and leaves an enormous hole in my heart.)

Sophie AF (*Shandor/Samantha by *Amurath Samurai) produced the impish bay colt, KB Sawyer Fahim, by KB Omega Fahim+++//ox. He’s a typical baby boy and is being shaped up by his purebred Arabian aunt “Johnnie” now that he is weaned. (Johnnie’s registered name is Live On Morjhaana+ ox.) With his FEI champion sire and FEI champion aunt, Sawyer is sure to grow up into a proper young man. (photo in New to the Herd section)

Sophie AF, Samantha and *Thassia (Bahadur/Thirza by Sulayman) will all be bred to KB Omega Fahim+++//ox in 2010 after taking a brief vacation this year. Farm sire KB Omega Fahim+++//ox is continuing his show career at FEI level dressage and is planning on competing in Grand Prix in 2010!! “Meg” was USDF All-Breeds Intermediate I Arabian Champion. He also earned the title of AHA Regional Champion at Intermediate I and Intermediate II levels. Meg also won two AHA Regional Reserve Championships at “In-Hand” (open and amateur to handle).

In addition, three of Meg’s daughters were AHA Regional Champions. Half Arabian KB Jull Fahim+/ was AHA Regional Champion at Fourth Level Dres-sage and Prix St. Georges. Half Arabian KB Kalila Fahim was AHA Regional Champion In-Hand and Top Five at First Level Dressage. KB Shakami Fahim (KB Omega Fahim+++//ox/Shagya’s SzaSza AF by *Shandor), was AHA Re-gional Champion In-Hand in the amateur handler division.

I have some exciting news - I have shipped semen from my stallion, Sterling Silver AF (*Shandor/Sapphire by *Oman), to a lady in Australia. There are no Shagyas cur-rently in Australia, so his offspring will be the foundation stock for the breed there. A new Shagya-Arabian regis-try will be formed there as well. I hope to visit Australia after the foals are born and bring some judges to get the purebred Arabian mares approved for Shagya breeding. This is such an exciting opportunity! I have more semen approved for export, as well, for those interested.

Sterling and I recently completed our first 20-mile NATRC ride. It was a first for both of us. He really impressed quite a few people there. Not only did we finish (my only goal), but I took home second place in horsemanship and Sterling received fifth place for horse in novice. He was well-mannered and willing throughout the two days. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my only foal this year - by Sterling out of my new Polish Arab mare Dawinnah (grand-dam of my beautiful colt Silverwood who died last year). Dawinnah throws gorgeous, typey foals with amaz-ing suspension. Two of her daughters are ATA approved. I hope to get her approved for the ATA as well.

I was just notified by USEA that my beautiful yearling colt Silverwood SH (Sterling Silver AF/Misstyyx Rose ox) won Region 1 USEF Reserve Horse of the Year for Half/Anglo Arabian Halter. Silverwood unfortunately passed away this past spring from a tragic accident, but it is nice that he has been remembered.

What a busy year we had in 2009!

Breeding started in May and on through August. Seven Shagya mares were bred. Looks like next year will be busy for us with new foals. We are really looking forward to them. Summer seemed to rush by as it always does here in Montana. We enjoyed the NASS inspection in Moiese, MT at Adele Furby’s farm. It was good to visit with old friends and meet new folks as well. We also enjoyed the presentation of the horses that were inspected. In late September, Felicity (*Oman/May Folly ox by *Fol Yasmeen), MJL Shagala (*Shandor/MJL Jasmine) and Nina AF (Janos/*Niobe by Balaton) headed home to Jamie Buck’s farm in Oxford, Georgia. Lucky gals - they got to miss the Montana winter. In mid-October, Shagya’s Sisu AF (*Shandor/*Shagya II-2 by Shagya II) joined the rest of the Shagya mares here at the farm. She is our latest addition. We finally have our *Shandor daughter. That’s about all the news. Seemed suddenly it was winter, and back to the heavy chores that come with the cold and snow. Looking forward to spring!!! We would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year!!!

Two Buck ShagyasJAMIE BUCK | OXFORD, GA

This past year has been very busy at Two Buck Shagyas, with fence fi-nally going up in preparation of our Shagya mares coming home from Montana to Georgia after being bred.

This past breeding season, Felicity (*Oman/May Folly ox by *Fol Yas-meen) was bred to Rio Bravo AF (Janos/Rachelle AA by H.Bravo) and Nina AF (Janos/*Niobe by Balaton) was bred to *O’Bajan Spirit (O’Bajan XX [Pamino]/*Gazal XV-5 by Gazal XV). These Shagya stallions are owned by Frank and Arlene Michaud. If all goes well, we should have two purebred Shagya-Arabian foals this season. This 2010 breeding season, Echo Daal (H. Bravo/Dollys Echo by *Fol Yasmeen) will also be bred to *O’Bajan Spirit. Then Echo will be brought home to Georgia to foal. Echo Daal has produced some exceptional Shagyas. I have my fingers crossed for one or two more from this grand ole gal.

Two Buck Shagyas (continued)JAMIE BUCK | OXFORD, GA

After attending the NASS Annual Meeting and Inspections in Mon-tana this past September, which was a fantastic time, I purchased a fourth Shagya – MJL Shagala (*Shandor/MJL Jasmine by *Budapest AF). Happens every time I visit Montana! I have plans to work with her so that we can start participating in endurance. I can’t wait!

After a good two and a half weeks in Montana, Frank Michaud was ready to help me get my girls home. The trip for Frank, the girls and me was pretty much uneventful and easy - except the last day! NOBODY warned us about “Monteagle Mountain Pass”!!! This pass is a four to six percent grade that goes on for miles over the east-ern continental divide between Nashville and Chattanooga. This stretch of highway is considered one of the most hazardous routes in the country.

All was well until I started to notice the steep runaway truck ramps and the smell of burnt rubber in the air from other vehicles. We were almost at the bottom of the last stretch and I was starting to relax my white knuckles – THEN! I saw Frank trying to downshift, heard gears starting to grind - we lost the clutch! Oh no! I could see we had at least another couple miles before we were at the bottom. I tried my best to remain calm as I asked “We still have brakes, don’t we? Please say YES!” As I watched Frank struggling with the gears, horrible thoughts of us crashing on the side of the mountain or going over the cliff with my girls and us lying all over Monteagle Pass. The last couple miles felt like fifty. The GPS did say it was the fastest route home… Luckily we made it down to the bottom of the mountain, coasting to the side of the road safely. Many hours passed waiting for a tow truck and help from my brother, about two hours away from where we stayed the night before. He was able to trailer the girls the rest of the way home as the tow truck followed with our truck.

It was a long and expensive trip but we all made it home SAFELY! To say the least… my handprints and footprints are now permanently embedded in the dashboard and floor of Frank’s truck. That is one route I will NEVER take again. Garmin needs another mode on the navigation route icon “Do you feel lucky?”!

Since our girls have been home, my daughter has taken a fancy to Nina AF. I can see endurance for these two in the very near future. I am happy to see her take such an interest and to share the same passion for the Shagyas as we do.

We experienced the second wettest season in Georgia’s history in 2009 - just shy of the record by a couple inches. The summer before last was our drought, this winter has been the coldest in history. We are waiting to see what comes next. Between the weather and the trip home this year – I think we are ready for just about anything here at Two Buck Shagyas. What a ride!

For Sale – GARMIN!

ISG News

ISG Secretary Carin Weiss has informed NASS that the ISG BoD held a meeting in late January. They are preparing for the ISG Annual Delegates Conference , which will take place on Friday afternoon, June 11 at “Stadl Paura”, an equine center in Austria. Carin mentioned several BoD projects that were discussed:

1) The ISG BoD is considering additional wording to the NASS 2009 proposal regarding possible member-ship criteria for applications from additional Shagya Societies in countries that already contain an ISG-member society.

2) The ISG BoD will propose that a brochure be created that would be an “International Brochure for Stal-lions at Stud”.

3) The ISG BoD will propose the creation of an “ISG News Network” in connection with the ISG homepage into which ISG-member societies could contribute news updates.

The venue for the upcoming European Championships for Shagya-Arabians, originally planned to be on June 13-14 in conjunction with the Austrian Lipizzan Society, has now been changed. Developments within the Austrian Lipizzan Society precluded a joint show with the Austrian Shagya-Arabian Society. Instead, the Shagya-Arabian championships will be held at the “Stadl Paura” horse center in Austria on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14. Invited judges for the show are: Adele Furby, Rudolph Meindl, Michael Horny and Bruno Furrer.

The NASS community extends sincere congratulations to Hallie Goetz, who recently com-pleted her judge certification with the ISG. Judge training requires years of dedication to the study of conformation and movement. Hallie’s mastery of this knowledge is a testament to her commitment to the Shagya-Arabian breed. We wish her best of luck as a future judge.

Congratulations, Hallie.

In September 2009, I attended the Shagya festival and championship show at Radautz, Romania as an ISG Learner Judge. Radautz is one of the foundation stud farms for the Shagya-Arabian breed (along with Babolna, Hungary, Topolcianky, Slovakia and Kabiuk, Bulgaria). The panel of international ISG judges included Dr. Michael Horny, direc-tor of Topolcianky, Dr. Walter Huber, Germany, ISG BoD member, Mr. Joseph Weiss, Austria and special guest of honor Mr. Hans Brabanetz, Hungary.

There were three full days of activities, including but not limited to, Shagya mares and stallions racing on the flat over a grass track, an open jumping competition (for all breeds), the in-hand Shagya breed classes (horses shown on the triangle) and a free-jumping exhibition.

The grand champion – best Shagya of the show – was won by the beautiful typey grey stallion Shagya XLII (Shagya LVI x 219 Koheilan XXIX –11) bred at Radautz. The reserve champion of the show was Shagana (Shagan x Shagya LVI-29) bred by Mr. Maez, Romania.

Throughout the weekend, there were many other Shagyas who caught my eye: a chestnut mare who galloped like a purebred Thoroughbred and streaked across the finish line in first place; a bay mare with the physique needed for three-day eventing and proved it as she raced well against Shagyas of both sexes and jumped successfully against warmbloods; A 20-year-old Shagya stallion who placed well in the jumping was the current Balkan youth champion’s horse and had won the title for two other youths in prior years; and the jumping ability of nu-merous Shagyas (both mares and stallions) shown in the free jumping proved to be as popular among the judges and the public as was the flat racing. A big thank you to all of the organizers of the event and to the other ISG judges - they all did a great job!
