When i’m planning a concert season, the thing that gets me most excited is variety — and the Nashville Symphony’s 2010/11 SunTrust Classical Series has plenty. on the 7A package, you’ll get a taste of everything from Mozart and Beethoven to visionary new works by John Adams and Philip Glass. Throughout the year, we’ll perform pieces by english, french, German, russian and Scandinavian composers, each with its own distinct flavor. i’m especially looking forward to conducting Duruflé’s requiem, a lush and moving choral showcase that will feature some of the nation’s best young singers, and you won’t want to miss our performance of Bruckner’s Third Symphony — an epic musical experience that will vividly demonstrate the remarkable acoustics of Laura Turner Concert Hall.

every time i conduct the Nashville Symphony, i’m reminded what an amazingly versatile orchestra we have. So when i programmed this year’s season, i was thinking about how to give our audiences a chance to experience the full scope of all that classical music has to offer. There’s something for everyone here. our 7B package opens with Louis Lortie, one of classical music’s fastest-rising stars, performing Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto. We’ll close out the season with a full performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony featuring the legendary mezzo-soprano frederica von Stade. in between, you can look forward to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a piece that sounds as thrilling and revolutionary today as it did a century ago, along with works by Mozart, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Dvorák, richard Strauss and one of today’s most gifted composers, richard Danielpour.

Since the opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center in 2006, the Nashville Symphony has emerged as one of the city’s leading presenters of jazz music, welcoming such talents as Chick Corea & Gary Burton, Dianne reeves, George Benson, McCoy Tyner and many others in the past few years. The Adams and reese Jazz Series’ fifth season promises another roster of world-class jazz talent, kicking off with the versatile saxophonist David Sanborn. Later in the season, we’ll welcome virtuoso guitarist Al Di Meola, and we’ll also host another program of lively jazz improvisation, all presented in the ideal acoustical environment of Laura Turner Concert Hall.

In the process, Sanborn has created a body of work that spans jazz, R&B, pop and rock, helping to define a new sound for his instrument. i like to think of The Ann & Monroe Carell family Trust Pied Piper Series as a musical adventure, a chance for the whole family to take a magical, fun-filled journey into the farthest reaches of the imagination. This year, the orchestra will fly into outer space to explore the planets and stars, we’ll bring all the excitement of the holidays to life, and we’ll go on a symphonic safari. Along the way, we’ll get help from some wonderful artists, including the Magic Circle Mime Company and the Platypus Theatre. This is going to be an exciting season, and i hope you and your family will join us! Everyone should hear Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand” at least once, and with good reason: This epic piece is one of the most breathtaking works in the entire classical repertoire, bringing together an immense orchestra, two large mixed choirs, a children’s chorus, organ, offstage brass and eight vocal soloists. The music is among Mahler’s most fully realized, an exuberant affirmation of life, and an embodiment of the composer’s assertion that “the symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.”

ARPEGGIOArpeggio is a dining experience offered in the East Lobby. Open before all SunTrust Classical, Bank of America Pops, Adams and Reese Jazz Series concerts and most special performances, the restaurant features a four-course buffet including appetizer, soup station, four entrées and dessert. The price is $38 with water and tea, not including tax and gratuity. Doors open two hours before the performance. Reservations are preferred; please call 615.687.6400. THE CAFÉ AND LOBBY BARSThe Café, located in the West Lobby, offers a bistro-style à la carte menu beginning two hours prior to all concerts. The Café is also open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Seven bars are spread throughout the building offering premium spirits, cocktails, wine, beer, soft drinks and bottled water.

SYMPHONY STOREThe Symphony Store is located on the west side of the building near the West Atrium lobby and the Café. A variety of items, including a wide selection of jewelry, apparel, gift items and classical CDs, are available at all price ranges. Customers may also place special orders. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and on all concert evenings from two hours prior to performance until up to 30 minutes after the performance has ended.

CONCERT CONCIERGEHave a question, request or comment? Please visit our Concert Concierge on the northwest side of the Main Lobby. The Concierge is available to help you with anything you might need during your visit. Concert Concierge is available through the end of intermission.

CLASSICAL CONVERSATIONSOffered in the Balcony Lobby prior to each SunTrust Classical Series concert, these informal half-hour talks with our conductors and guest artists explore the evening’s program. Talks begin at 6 p.m. Thursday and at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

DISCOUNTED PARKING AT THE PINNACLEOur new next-door neighbors, The Pinnacle at Symphony Place, are offering Symphony patrons pre-paid parking at a discount! The garage typically charges $10-$15 for parking on the night of a Symphony event, but you can park for as little as $8 per night when you purchase three or more pre-paid parking vouchers. If you would prefer to buy just one pre-paid voucher at a time, each will cost you $9. The Pinnacle is located directly across Third Avenue from Schermerhorn Symphony Center. To purchase pre-paid parking at The Pinnacle, please call 615.687.6401.

VALETValet parking, provided by Parking Management Company, is available for all performances on Symphony Place, on the north side of the building between Third and Fourth avenues. We offer pre-paid valet parking for all performances. For more details, call 615.687.6401.

SHUTTLESFor $10 cash per person, round-trip shuttle service is available for SunTrust Classical Series and Bank of America Pops Series concerts. First come, first served. The shuttles leave from Belle Meade Plaza and The Factory at Franklin. For more information, call 615.687.6541.
