Narrative Text I

Five-Footed Bear

Once uon a time there was a strange bear who lived in a !ungle. "e had #ive

#eet. But all animals who lived with him didn$t #eel strange. %he #ive #ooted bear liked

to hel other animals. "is home was oen #or anyone who wanted to stay.

One a#ternoon& when the #ive #ooted bear went home& he #ound a rabbit under

a mahogany tree. %he rabbit looked hungry. %hen the #ive #ooted bear brought him to

his home.

%he ne't day& when the #ive #ooted bear was looking #or meal& the rabbit

heled him clean u the house. (hile the rabbit was working& a monkey and a mousedeer came )uietly. %hey retended to be robbers. %hey wanted to disturb the rabbit.

%he rabbit was #rightened. %he monkey and the mouse deer tied u the rabbit$s

legs and lugged his mouth. Fortunately the #ive #ooted bear came and released him.

%he rabbit was uset because the bear wasn$t angry with the monkey and the mouse

deer. *n #act& the #ive #ooted bear let them live in his house.

On the ne't day the monkey and the mouse deer asked the rabbit to #orgive

them. %hey heled him clean u the house. *n the evening when the bear was coming

home& he brought them meals and a new #riend. %he monkey and the mouse deer werevery a#raid knowing who the new #riend was. "e was a tiger. But the rabbit wasn$t

a#raid. %he tiger was one o# the rabbit$s best #riends. %he monkey and the mouse deer

didn$t know it. %he monkey and the mouse deer were very embarrassed. %hat was the

cleverness o# the #ive #ooted bear. "e wanted to make them aware o# their bad habit o#

#rightening the rabbit. %hen they sat and en!oyed their dinner together.

The Little Jackal a! The Alli"at#r

%he little +ackal was very #ond o# shell-#ish. "e used to go down by the river

and hunt along the edges #or crabs and such things. ,nd once& when he was hunting

#or crabs& he was so hungry that he ut his aw into the water a#ter a crab without

looking #irst& which you never should do %he minute he ut in his aw& sna the big

,lligator who lives in the mud down there had it in his !aws.

Oh& dear/ thought the little +ackal; the big ,lligator has my aw in his

mouth *n another min ute he will ull me down and gobble me u (hat shall * do0

what shall * do0/ %hen he thought& suddenly& *$ll deceive him/

o he ut on a very cheer#ul voice& as i# nothing at all were the matter& and he

said& "o ho 2lever 3r. ,lligator mart 3r. ,lliga tor& to take that old bulrush root

#or my aw * hoe you$ll #ind it very tender/

%he old ,lligator was hidden away beneath the mud and bulrush leaves& and

he couldn$t see any thing. "e thought& 4shaw *$ve made a mistake./ o he oened

his mouth and let the little +ackal go.

%he little +ackal ran away as #ast as he could& and as he ran he called out&

%hank you& 3r. ,lligator 5ind 3r. ,lligator o kind o# you to let me go/

%he old ,lligator lashed with his tail and snaed with his !aws& but it was too

late; the little +ackal was out o# reach.

,#ter this the little +ackal ket away #rom the river& out o# danger. But a#ter

about a week he got such an aetite #or crabs that nothing else would do at all; he #elt

that he must have a crab. o he went down by the river and looked all around& very

care#ully. "e didn$t see the old ,lligator& but he thought to himsel#& * think *$ll not

take any chances./ o he stood still and began to talk out loud to himsel#. "e said& 6

(hen * don$t see any little crabs on the land * most generally see them

sticking out o# the water& and then * ut my aw in and catch them. * won der i# thereare any #at little crabs in the water to-day0/

%he old ,lligator was hidden down in the mud at the bottom o# the river& and

when he heard what the little +ackal said& he thought& ,ha *$ll retend to be a little

crab& and when he uts his aw in& *$ll make my dinner o# him./ o he stuck the black

end o# his snout above the water and waited.

%he little +ackal took one look& and then he said& %hank you& 3r. ,lligator

5ind 3r. ,lligator 7ou are e!ee"ingly kind to show me where you are * will have

dinner elsewhere./ ,nd he ran away like the wind.

One day many years ago& at a time when his mouth was still small and dainty&

as in #act it used to be& the #o' was out walking and haened to notice a huaychao

singing on a hillto. Fascinated by the bird$s #lute-like bill& he said olitely& (hat a

lovely #lute& #riend "uaychao& and how well you lay it 2ould you let me try it0 *$ll

give it back in a moment& * romise./

%he bird re#used. But the #o' was so insistent that at last the huaychao lent

him its bill& advising him to sew u his lis e'cet #or a tiny oening so that the 8#lute$

would #it !ust right.

%hen the #o' began to lay. "e layed on and on without stoing. ,#ter a

while the huaychao asked #or its bill back& but still the #o' ket on. %he bird reminded

him& 7ou romised. Besides& * only use it #rom time to time; you$re laying it

constantly./ But the #o' ain no attention and ket right on.

,wakened by the sound o# the #lute& skinks came out o# their burrows and

climbed u the hill in a bustling throng. (hen they saw the #o' laying& they began to

dance.

,t the sight o# the dancing skunks& the #o' burst out laughing. ,s he laughed&

his lis became unstitched. "is mouth tore oen and ket on tearing until he wasgrinning #rom ear to ear. Be#ore the #o' could regain his comosure& the huaychao had

icked u his bill and #lown away. %o this day the #o' has a huge mouth - as

unishment #or breaking his romise.

9ong& long ago& there was a boy who roamed around the world. "e stayed near

a river.

One a#ternoon& he #ished near the river and got a very big #ish. "e #elt very

hay and surrised.

%hen he brought it home& the #ish changed into a beauti#ul woman. ,nd the

scales o# #ish became gold coins. %hey got married. %he boy romised not to tell the

origin o# his wi#e to other eole.

%hey had a son but he was very naughty and lay. Once& the son was ordered

to send meal to his #ather who was working in the #arm. One the way& the son ate

some o# the meal and le#t the rest #or his #ather. %hus& his #ather got angry. o& he hit

his son and said& "ow naughty you are. o wonder& you are really a #ish child/ %he

son told his mother what his #ather had said. %he women was sad because her husband

had broken his romise.

Finally& the woman went away and !um into river. (hen the woman !umed

into the river& it was raining heavily. %he river was #looded. %hen the area around the

river became a large lake. 4eole call it 9ake %oba.
