Emergency Times
It’s July. That much has become glaringly obvious to me. As much as I might liketo think it can stay June for a few more weeks, the calendar keeps telling me that
it can’t. So I’m stuck, I guess, and just have to accept the fact that the pages turn.Chalk it up to something else I can’t do: calculus, automobile maintenance andchanging the space-time continuum. The list grows daily.
As the summer gets into full gear and someone somewhere getting paid a lotmore than I makes smart decisions like tearing up Surfside Road, I’ve been notic-ing a particular electricity in the air. There’s this kind of intensity that’s floatingaround, as summer folks show up for the season and activity levels start picking up.Houses are getting opened up and, as that process continues, things that have beendormant all winter are suddenly springing back to life. Things like refrigerators andice makers and outdoor showers. And in some cases, some of those things aren’tworking quite as well as one might have hoped they would be.
It’s just part of the cost of doing business, I suppose you might say. You don’t usesomething for six months or more and, lo and behold, it seems to have deteriorat-ed in your absence. Pipes have cracked, belts and hoses have rotted, motors have justgiven up and died. It happens. The problem is, oftentimes these things break whenwe’re depending on them to work. When that happens, we’ve got ourselves a littleproblem. And if there’s one thing I know about little problems, it’s that they canturn into big problems real fast. And that means an emergency.
As I’ve lamented before in this space and no doubt will do so again, “Do YouKnow Who I Am?” season is upon us, and suddenly everyone around these parts isoh-so-important. And when important people have emergencies, it’s a recipe forhigh drama. But let me put that whole thing in perspective for you with a little storyfrom my own life-on-the-edge childhood.
Growing up in Texas, my participation in after-school football wasn’t really achoice. Rather, it was a requirement. And as a hulking fifth grader who stood a fullfour-foot-six and weighed every ounce of seventy-three pounds, you might surmisethat I spent more than my fair share of time in the local emergency rooms. Brokenarms, broken fingers, broken whatevers. The funny thing was, though, no matterhow much pain I was in, I always had to wait to get in to see a doctor. There wasalways some more important emergency that was taking their attention. Moreimportant than my broken arm? Don’t you people realize I’m in pain here?
Then it happened one day. It was a Sunday in January, and my last consciousthought was that I had a lot of homework I had to do for the next day and I reallydidn’t feel like doing it. I was running out in the street after a ball – I didn’t listento my mother in fifth grade, either – and ended up doing a flip over the car thathappened to be coming by. So as I was getting wheeled into the emergency room,suddenly I was that guy that got to go first and all the other kids with broken limbshad to wait for me.
The moral here, kids, is that our problems can be divided up into things that trulyare emergencies — like getting hit by a car — and things that only seem like emer-gencies, like a broken finger that my mother taped to a popsicle stick because “that’sall they’re going to do at the doctor’s office anyway.”
And the important thing is to be able to differentiate between the two, no mat-ter how hard it might be. A broken ice maker an hour before your first cocktailparty of the season might seem like the be-all-end-all of emergencies at the time,but you can recover. I’d suggest you go buy a couple of bags of ice and avoid thefrantic call to your caretaker. When the toilet in the guest bathroom looks like ageyser as your mother-in-law is knocking on your door, you’ve got the green lightto call it an emergency.
Keep this stuff in mind, too, when you’re calling your caretaker with these emer-gencies of varying levels of importance. If he can’t get to you right away, there’s agood reason. It’s not because he’s enjoying your misery watching you tear your hairout as you figure out how to make ice with no freezer. It might just be because he’strying to figure out how to stop Old Faithful from destroying somebody’s marriage.
Take a deep breath and enjoy the island. After all, isn’t that what this place is allabout?
