In homes with garbage dispos-als, jetted (whirlpool) bathsand/or water softeners that alsohave a septic or other privateon-site sewage disposal sys-tems, special care must be takento prevent overburdening the
system. Garbage disposals: A garbagedisposal can be a nice feature inany kitchen, but regular use canmore than double the amount ofharmful grease and solids thatwhat would typically flow into
a septic system. While the dis-posal grinds kitchen scraps intosmall pieces, they can still con-tribute to the buildup of scumand sludge in the tank. Wastematerials in a septic tank arenormally broken down by bac-terial action, but most of thesolids must eventually bepumped out of the tank. Theextra solid matter introducedinto the tank when using agarbage disposal, means thetank must be pumped more fre-quently to avoid problems. Tohelp compensate for the pres-ence of a garbage disposal, mostcodes specify an increase in theminimum septic tank size. Buteven with a larger tank, limitingthe use of the disposal is a wisepractice. Jetted baths: Another nice ad-dition to any house is a jetted
bath. Whether used for relax-ation or therapy, the soothing,swirling waters of a jetted bathare welcomed by homeowners.Unfortunately, the water thatdrains from a large bath canoverburden your septic system.Emptying large amounts ofwater from a draining bath canstir the solids in the tank, carry-ing them along with the waterinto the drainfield, saturatingand eventually clogging the soilin the drainfield. To minimizeproblems, drain the bath slowly.
Water Softeners: Unlikegarbage disposals and jettedbaths, water softeners are a ne-cessity in some homes to cor-rect the presence of “hard”water (with a high mineral con-tent) that can clog lines in appli-ances and old piping and causeother problems. But watertreatment systems such as watersofteners can pump hundreds ofgallons of water into a septicsystem all at once. This can ag-itate the solids, which alongwith excess water flow into the
drainfield. In addition the reg-ular backwashing required toregenerate the softener flushessalts into the septic system.There is also some concern thatthe salt solution used in thetreatment process can affect thenormal breakdown of solids inthe septic tank or reduce the ab-sorption rate of the soil in thedrainfield. A plumbing profes-sional may be able to providealternatives to help limit the dis-charge of the extra water andsalts into your septic.

Many will evenprovide landscape design serv-ices free of charge provided youpurchase the plants from them. Keep in mind that garden cen-tres are busy at this time of year,so it’s a good idea to bring alonga sketch of what you want yourgarden to look like. Considersunny and shady areas of youryard and think about a colourscheme, varying heights and
widths of plants and bloomingschedules as well as where youmight like to grow some vegeta-bles or herbs. If you don’t consider yourself agreen thumb, creating a colour-ful garden is still within reach.There are plenty of places toturn to for tips and advice. Forexample, your local library orbookstore will have a variety ofgardening books and magazinesfilled with examples. The Inter-net is also a good place to checkfor gardening ideas.You’ll know it’s time to start onyour spring garden once you seetulips and other spring bulbscome into bloom which meansthe ground is soft enough to dig.The ground should also bethawed enough to divide andmove perennial flowers andherbs, plant shrubs and treesand to start rejuvenating yourlawn. It’s also a good time toprune bushes.

Don’tcut down the leaves off yourspring bulbs until the foliageturns brown. Bulbs need theirleaves to replenish food re-serves for next year’s flowers.• Plant summer flowering bulbssuch as Freesia, Gladiolus,Dahlias, Lilies and Anemonies.• Plant annuals and vegetablesonce all risk of frost has passed.A well-planned and maintainedlandscape with beautiful springflowers will beautify your homeand increase its appeal with po-tential buyers.
