Day One...San Francisco to Wine Country

Page 3: Napa Valley Experience

Destination: Napa Valley ❚ Pick-Up at San Francisco International Airport ❚ Private Transportation to Auberge de Soleil ❚ Dinner on property at Auberge de Soleil Restaurant

Napa Valley is considered one of the top wine growing regions in the world. The combination of Mediterranean climate, geography, and geology of the valley are conducive to growing quality wine

grapes.

The Napa Valley is located in Northern California, about 50 miles northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area and about 60 miles west of Sacramento. The Napa Valley is 30 miles long and 5 miles at its widest point.

In 1968, Napa Valley vintners and others in the community had the foresight to preserve open space and pre-vent future over-development by enacting the nation’s first Agriculture Preserve.

The Charles Krug Winery, established in 1861, was Napa Valley’s first commercial winery. The number of wineries grew rapidly until, by the end of the nineteenth century, more than 140 wineries had been estab-lished in the area. Some of those wineries still exist today including Beringer, Beaulieu, Mayacamas, Far Niente, and Chateau Montelena.

By 1976, while Napa Valley was becoming famous locally for its high quality wines, France was still consid-ered the undisputed wine champion. At the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, a Napa Valley Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena and a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars won first place over some of the most famous French labels in a blind tasting. The wine world took notice. Today, Napa Val-ley is accepted as one of the world’s premier wine producing regions.

Auberge de Soleil - terraced down the hillside, all accommodations at Auberge du Soleil feature Med-iterranean-inspired décor with original contemporary art. All rooms feature Italian linens, down bedding and duvets, Auberge du Soleil’s custom-made bath amenities, plush robes and slippers and private outdoor terraces for relaxing or dining. Day Two...The Ambassador Wine Tour

Page 5: Napa Valley Experience

All Aboard! ❚ 9:45 AM - Driver pick up at Auberge de Soleil ❚ 10:30 AM - Wine Train Ambassador Tour check in (M-Th, lunch train only) ❚ 4:00 PM - Driver pick up at Train Station ❚ 5:00 PM - Private Cooking Instruction ❚ 9:00 PM - Return to Auberge de Soleil

Ambassador Wine Tour - The Ambassador Winery Tour is more than simply a tour of two of the Napa Valley’s most famous wineries, it is a tour of almost the whole Napa Valley. Begin your experience in the Wine Train Station, where our Wine Educator speaks about wine tasting and the Napa Valley while you participate by tasting some of our favorites and asking questions. Board the train as soon as it arrives at the station, where you will be served a freshly prepared lunch from our on board kitchen. Marvel at the beautiful western side of the Napa Valley through the expansive picture windows in our dining car. Then move to one of our restored 1915 Pullman lounge cars for dessert, coffee and cocktails. Then transfer to a luxury mo-torcoach and head for Raymond Vineyards winery.

Located in the very heart of the Napa Valley’s wine growing region, but still off the beaten path, Raymond Vineyards has been a family operated winery for 35 years. Explore Raymond’s wine making facilities and taste wine directly from the barrel. The Raymond Vineyards visit will conclude with a tasting of select Raymond Reserve and Small Lot series red and white wines.

Boarding the motorcoach once more, the tour travels along the Silverado Trail, on the east side of the Napa Valley, to ZD Wines. ZD is an organic, solar powered, family operated winery. Stop in the cellar and view what’s fermenting, or take a look at the next step in the wine making process. Finally sit down, overlook the valley and finish with a spectacular tasting of current releases paired with nuts, fruits, and cheeses.

This is a SEATED WITH OTHERS event. Wine on board the Train is not included.

A leisurely half hour ride southbound on the rest of the scenic Silverado Trail takes guests back to the Wine Train Station.

Private Cooking Instruction: The chefs will work with you to create a menu utilizing the freshest most seasonal ingredients gathered from Napa Valley. You will roll up your sleeves and don aprons as you chop, slice and dice to prepare the meal that will then be served to you paired with wines from the winery kitchen we work in. We create menus that will expand your kitchen knowledge and focus on the sea-sons best products. After cooking, guests sit down to enjoy their creations! Cooking Class

Day Three...The Wine

The Tasting Continues... ❚ 9:45 AM - Driver/Guide pick up at Auberge de Soleil ❚ 10:00 AM - Merus Winery ❚ 11:45 AM - Kelham Family Vineyards (Lunch on Property) ❚ 3:30 PM - Morlet Family Winery ❚ 5:15 PM - Return to Auberge de Soleil ❚ Dinner at Leisure

Merus Winery - When William Foley brought Merus into his Foley Family Wines group at the end of 2007, one of his first goals was to find a Napa Valley winery site worthy of the brand. A few months later he acquired a historic ranch tucked into a canyon on the east side of the valley. One of Napa’s fabled “ghost wineries,” it had been abandoned in the wake of Prohibition and only recently brought back to life. Now the fully updated winery includes custom-made wine-making equipment and 7,000 square feet of caves for barrel storage. The winery’s new tasting salon and a second tasting area in the caves were stunningly renovated by Merus co-founder Erika Gottl’s Amsterdam-based UXUS design consultancy. The guests will enjoy a tasting of three wines in the privacy of the wine cave.

Kelham Family Vineyards - Their goal as a family is to grow, produce, and bottle premium wines from their own prized vineyard in Oakville. These sophisticated wines are made to age and directly reflect the finest grapes and soil for wine-making. The varietals on the sixty acre property consist of Caber-net, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and a small planting of Petit Verdot. Concentrating on the integral quality and craftsmanship of their estate fruit they strive for perfection in all of their wines. The current production for the Oakville property is 4,400 cases.

Morlet Family Vineyards - In St. Helena, the heart of the Napa Valley, Luc and Jodie Mor-let hand-craft their vineyard designated wines and unique cuvées from the surrounding Napa Valley and from Sonoma County. Meticulously farmed vineyards and low-intervention wine-making techniques pro-duce powerful yet refined wines. Guests will enjoy a private tour and tasting with Jodie Morlet.
