Staff Spotlight: Kim Calnan

Kim Calnan, Nantucket High School Sailing Team Head Coach, is from Tampa, Florida where she also attended

the University of South Florida. This will be Kim’s second season as the Whalers’ Head Coach. Kim started sailing in

college and quickly became a valued member of the Varsity sailing team. She has worked at Great Harbor

Yacht Club the past three summers and will be returning this summer as their Junior Program Director.

NCS Introduces New 420 Red/Race CoachCaroline Patten joins NCS this summer as the Head 420 Race Coach. Caroline is from Barnegat Light, New Jersey and graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 2011. She grew up racing Optis and 420s at Barnegat Light Yacht Club and has worked as a sailmaker at Vermont Sailing Partners since graduating. In college, Caroline was a Women's Honorable Mention All American and Co-Captain of the sailing team. She majored in Environmental Studies and when she isn’t sailing, she loves to snowboard and surf. We look forward to welcoming Caroline to the program in a few short months!

Programs Still Available!Highlighted Program: Water Sports

Water Sports at the Jetties Sailing Center offers an alternative to sailing lessons for students, ages 9 to 12 years, who are interested in becoming more comfortable on and around the water and in a variety of settings. Activities on the water include sailing in our new Hobie Getaway, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, beach games and adventures! Water Sports is taught with a focus on caring for the marine environment, which is reflected in daily lesson plans and activities. Once a week the Water Sports group works with the Maria Mitchell Association for a "beach comb” to learn more about Nantucket's shore life. Check out more available programming at NCS.

We are pleased to announce that Nantucket Community Sailing has been selected, for the second year in a row, as the beneficiary of the Nautican Foundation’s Summer Soiree. Last year’s event raised $16,000, which was donated to Nantucket Community Sailing and made possible 43 scholarships. The Nautican Foundation, a 501c3, “aims to continually motivate new generations of Nantucket Island residents and visitors to be aware of, and supportive of, charitable organizations that benefit the island, its community, and its people.” Each year the Foundation selects a local non- profit to support. Mark your calendar: the Summer Soiree will be held on Saturday, July 26th at the new NCS Maintenance Facility on Shadbush Road.
