Falling for Nantucket

Count me among the many who live on or visit Nantucket and think September and October might be the island’s finest months. Of course, most of us appreciate the busy sum-mer season that has just passed. This year again brought us enthusiastic seasonal and second homeowners and many tourists who consider Nantucket as among the finest summer resorts anywhere. Thanks to their contributions to our island’s economy, many of us are able to live here year round.

Dry, summer-like weather in early September has underscored the appeal of this time of year on our island. At least through Columbus Day Weekend, we’ll have many chances to be out and about enjoying these pleasant autumn days. By the time you read this, some of us will have enjoyed our annual Maritime Festival and Island Fair, both in mid September, with yours truly among the emcees for both. I’ll be joining the hundreds on Saturday, October 11 who are likely to visit our magnificent naturally occurring cranberry bogs, where Nantucket Conservation Founda-tion celebrates the cranberry harvest along with traditional agricultural activities, foods and crafts. You can watch cranberry harvesters at work, follow herding dogs as they dart around a temporary corral herding sheep or sample locally made baked goods and Nantucket grown honey. If you miss the event, these incredible bogs are open year-round along Polpis Road. If you’re hunting for a new Nantucket home, take note of our “American Beauty” feature, which shows what can be done in an antique home to keep its decor true to its origins. These homeowners have put together a huge collection of marvelous Early American antiques and artifacts, yet their home exudes welcoming comfort. So, too, does the Centerboard Inn, subject of another feature in this issue, but in a much more modern fashion. It and its nearby sister inn The Regatta were recently restyled by interior designer Nina Liddle, and the result is both terrifically inviting and eye-arresting. Whether your preference in a new home is antique or modern, there are plenty of options here on Nantucket. Both styles have their fans among Nantucket residents and potential homeowners. For those ready to take on the challenge of an historic local house, Micheal May, executive director of Nantucket Preservation Trust, reminds us why saving our historic interiors matter so much. Author Sherry Lefevre draws delightfully on her experience with buying a new home on our island, then furnishing it partly from online auctions, in her book “The Nan-tucket House that eBay Built.” You’ll be entertained by her musings about and experiences in acquiring a classic “old house” on Nantucket, with a great amount of Nantucket history and tips about decorating included. Of course, you’ll find plenty of sources at our local merchants to furnish your home here or elsewhere in whatever is your style. Fall is a great time to browse leisurely through our many decorator boutiques, antique and gift stores or art galleries. Some of the best among those are included in our pages as advertisers. Please let them know that you saw their ad in Nantucket Home. See you around the island during these beautiful, waning days of autumn.

everal Nantucket non-profit organi-zations focus on the island’s history, its flora and fauna, and its open

spaces, but Nantucket Preservation Trust is the only organization whose primary concern is preservation of the island’s unique historic resources, especially those that are privately owned. As executive director of the trust, I oversee the NPT mission of advo-cating for historic architectural preserva-tion and ensure that our organization helps local homeowners and the Nan-tucket community to do the same. To learn more about NPT and greater details about our extensive resources and services, many of which are available free or at a nominal charge, please visit us online at nantucketpreservation.org. Since 1997, Nantucket Preservation Trust has endeavored to ensure that the island’s historic buildings and their interiors are preserved for generations to come, by providing instruction and tips on preserving old houses, informative publications, and by advocating for and directing property owners on how to create preservation easements on their historic properties. The survival of Nantucket’s historic buildings is due in large part to factors associated with the economic decline of

the whaling industry in the mid 1800s. The island was largely forgotten for half a century and, as a result, its fine architecture sur-vived through neglect. By the late 19th century, efforts to preserve the island’s historic resources were initiated—echoing the nation’s early preservation movement. The first preservation work on island included the saving of the Old Mill in 1894 and voluntary steps that were adopted to ward off insensi-

tive changes to historic buildings. These actions also helped create an atmosphere where new construction reflected the island’s appreciation of its historic architecture. In 1955, Nantucket was one of the first communities in the nation to establish local historic districts and to adopt regulations to control exterior changes. Originally encom-passing only the Old Town and the Village of Siasconset, this local historic district, administered by the Nantucket Historic District Commission, was expanded in 1971 to include the entire island of Nantucket as well as the islands of Muskeget and Tuckernuck. In 1966, Nantucket’s historic district was designated one of the country’s first National Historic Land-

marks (NHL) under new federal regula-tions implemented that year to protect it from state and federal intervention and to recognize its national importance. In 1975 the NHL also was expanded to cover all of Nantucket Island as well as the two outer islands. Today, most islanders and visitors think of Nantucket and historic preservation simultaneously—they go together hand in hand. But the reality is that the historic fabric is being destroyed every day. Nantucket’s very success as a summer resort poses a threat to its historic resources.

THREATS TO LOCAL HISTORY The integrity of Nantucket’s amazing collection of 18th- and 19th-century buildings is threatened as never before. The significance of the island’s historic architecture, recognized as an American treasure, is often sacrificed in the name of progress, leaving empty shells of once glorious houses. In the past, Nantucket houses evolved gradually over time. The end result was hundreds of wonderfully preserved

historic houses, each with a complete “story to tell” about when it was built and how it was altered over time. On a visit to such a house, you might see original transoms, crooked doors,one-board-thick paneled walls, wavy old glass, and other clues of age and time in plaster walls and hand-hewn flooring.  Unfortunately, today the centuries-old practice of gradual evolu-tion and careful repair is often replaced

by an all too easy solution of tearing out—leaving the interiors scrubbed of all their charm, and with little or no authenticity, historyor character.   If we continue to destroy historic interiors, how will Nantucket be different than any new, “Nantucket-style” subdivi-sion built on the mainland? The Nantucket Preservation Trust believes protecting and honoring these important resources and encouraging the return of traditional practices that, over the cen-turies, made Nantucket a uniquely beautiful and special place, is critical. We encourage property owners, realtors, builders and de-velopers to turn to us as a resource for best preservation practices so these landmarks of the past can be preserved for future genera-

ew artists on Nantucket show such refined talent and array of artistic skills as does Chalermkhwan “Kwan” Buadam. Her divergent and accomplished output includes

jewelry, drawing, paintings, murals, cooking and even fantasti-cally carved fruits and vegetables. The native of Thailand grew up in the southern part of that country, showing a knack for artistic expression from an early age, much to her mother’s consternation, by drawing on and otherwise “decorat-ing” the walls of her family home. After studying many art forms and graduating from Lachapat University in Phuket, Buadam returned to the south of Thailand, where she worked for two years restoring huge Thai style murals and frescoes at Wat Kankawadee temple. She later opened a gallery with restaurant near the coastal town of Krabi, but both were destroyed by the tsunami of 2004. After return-ing to the Phuket area, Buadam opened a gallery on the beach at Kata and, today, she divides her time between there and her Nantucket art and design business, Black Lotus Studio. On Nantucket, Buadam has created murals inside many island homes, both on her own and in collaboration with other Nantucket decorative artists including Audrey Sterk and Mary Lacoursier, who we feature in this issue on page 68.

On her own, Buadam also paints on smaller canvases, producing ethereal, soft-focus landscapes showing shorelines and tranquil harbors with boats and birds afloat, usually painted on a textured, stucco-like surface. In a very different

fashion, Buadam decorates jumbo-size canvases with vivid ethnic Thai figures dressed in brightly colored garments, with lacey background patterns in shimmering, metal-lic gold. Although traditional in their motifs, these large works remind one of Pop Art: big and eye-popping bold. In recent weeks, her work has been exhibited on Nantucket at the new Ampersand, Artists Association of Nantucket and at Old Spouter Gallery.

Her impressive talent extends beyond her two dimen-sional work, as Buadam also fashions women’s jewelry, creates delicately carved fruits and vegetables, and caters food from Asian and other cuisines. You’ll find her showing work in most of her art forms at Nantucket’s weekly Farmers & Arti-sans Market, alongside the downtown post office on Saturdays through Columbus Day Weekend. For more on Buadam and her multi talents, see her portfolio of work at www.blacklotusstudio.net or call her at 508-901-1801.

T his historic blue clapboard house is situated sideways on the property, on a busy corner near town. It’s an uncommon façade for Nantucket except for the tran-

som windows over the front door, which often held blown-glass “witches’ balls,” thought to ward off evil spirits. The front of the house faces a large expansive lawn; well-manicured gardens rim the prop-erty beyond. It’s incredible to imagine that such lush surroundings exist at the edge of town. If you hadn’t been looking for the house, you might not know it is there. In fact, you might never have realized that marvelous gardens lie just beyond the fence that surrounds this property. The owners have main-tained the gardens with meticulous care, having created, over the years, many different areas to enjoy. There’s the little water garden just beyond the back patio. The large lawn beyond is surrounded with mature trees and all sorts of species of flowering bushes and plants. A pocket garden close to the picket fence is filled with roses, with passersby often catching their scent as they walk by.

Full hydrangea bushes surround the house as well. Daylilies bloom in mid-summer. Even in early fall the variety of green plantings are lush and lovely, creating a private oasis right in the midst of bustling commerce. When you are in the gardens there is a sense of being transported out of town. The house appears to have been here always. How-

ever, it was built in 1780 in Vermont and transported to Nantucket by Weather Hill Construction in the l980s, then reassembled on its pres-ent lot. The home’s current owners are prominent antique dealers from New York, who have appropriately filled the house with an impressive collection of early Nantucket light-ship baskets, scrimshaw, marine antiques, period furniture, and an array of art objects worthy of a museum. Each year the two host a lawn party for the benefit of Nan-tucket Lightship Basket Museum so that the members may enjoy their personal collections displayed throughout the house. But the gar-dens are the real stars of the event as everyone marvels at the exquisite landscaping.

The owners have maintained the gardens with meticulous care, having created, over the years, many different areas to enjoy.

Furnishings were deliberately chosen to fit into this mostly green landscape, reflecting the owners’ good sense of design.

The dining room was originally called the keeping room. Once used for cooking, the fireplace is surrounded by a massive mantel that holds miniature lightship baskets by local craftsman Paul Willer. Early antique baskets by Jose Reyes and others hang from the beams.

Style INN

At the Centerboard Inn, on the corner of Chester and Centre streets, the circa 1880 Second Empire and mansard style architecture is a showstopper. In 2011, when Paul and Lauri Benk purchased the inn and prepared to renovate it, they wanted to preserve the architectural details inside and out while creating a new interior that would be light, elegant and comfortable. With the keen eye of island interior designer Nina Liddle, they succeeded in the rebirth of the historic inn.

46 nantucket HOME

fter several discussions about changes to be made at their new inn on Nantucket,

Paul and Lauri Benk were comfort-able having interior designer Nina Liddle take the lead and go with it. A year-round Nantucket resident since 1992, Liddle lives on the island with her husband Matt, head of the upper school at the Nantucket New School, their daughter Maggie, and a menagerie of family pets. After 12 years in the real estate business on Nantucket, and designing, build-ing, and renovating three homes of her own, Liddle opened her design business in 2007. Her distinctive past-meets-present style draws inspiration from the natural environment, mixing aged treasures with modern and chic furnishings of today. She is drawn to neutral backgrounds highlighting decorative items with a surprise of color.

A THE CENTERBOARD INN Guests enter The Center-board Inn from the ornate covered porch festooned with balustrades, hanging ferns and a patterned shingle mansard roof. Once they cross the threshold, they immedi-ately realize they are in a special place. Magnificent 12-foot ceilings, with 7-foot windows, distinguish the first floor. Most windows have the original glass, with all of its perfectly imperfect character “flaws” produced by 1880 artisan techniques. The original louvered shutters were repaired and painted

white along with all of the trim, which adds to the height and grandeur of the architecture in the parlor, dining room and the master suite on the first floor. The sheer height of the space often inspires “oohs” and “ahhs” from visitors. On the Centre Street side of the inn, a 10-foot-tall

bay window illuminates the front parlor. Lauri Benk thought to replace the existing bench seating and create a table-for-two setting with a statement light fixture suspended from above. Liddle went with that idea and made it spectacular, installing a globe-shaped driftwood pendant light above a whitewashed wood pedestal table. Linen salon chairs with bright teal and white accent pillows by Serena & Lily complement the nearby pair of soft, sea foam green, overstuffed chairs. Passersby and dinner guests across the street at American Seasons sometimes ask for a look inside after seeing the tableau in the evening, when the soft glow of the lamp fills the room. The setting often evokes a “wow” when first-time guests arrive to check-in. “With the Centerboard I sought a light, comfortable atmosphere with soothing relaxing colors,” said Liddle. “I wanted to remind guests that they are on an island. The main objective was to lighten and brighten. I like to add pops of color with the accessories.”

The master suite, located just to the left of the front door, is arguably one of the prettiest guest accommodations on Nantucket. Phillip Jeffries grass cloth wallpaper envelops the two adjoining rooms, creating an ethereal effect when one enters the suite. The original parquet wood inlay floors are reminiscent of a twisted rope, echoing the history of the structure having been built as a whaling captain’s home. The working fireplace has been updated with glass doors. A very comfortable down-stuffed sofa covered in natural linen opens to a queen bed, making this is one of three rooms where the inn can accommodate families. The master bedroom has a king bed with tufted linen headboard and sumptuous European bedding in crisp white textures, with many pillows and a cloud-like, white down comforter folded like origami across the foot of the bed. The combination of a memory foam mattress with built-in pillow top is used in every guest room.

The two-room master suite at The Centerboard Inn is incredibly spacious yet very comfortably wrapped in Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wall covering.

Drawing on inspiration from early American

design and techniques, Nantucket artist and designer

Mary Emery Lacoursier creates records of old and “new”

history in Nantucket homes and public spaces.

ombining longtime skills and techniques learned as an illustrator and graphic artist, Lacoursier ex-pertly crafts unique artistic adornments in both

living and business environments. She also has an interior designer’s sense of what works effectively in a particular space. From simple inscrip-tions on doorjambs and trim work to complicated drawings on tabletops and whole-room murals, Lacoursier’s work decorates dozens of homes. Her pen and ink drawings can also be found on the bar top at Oran Mor restaurant on Nantucket, on private home bars and tabletops, and in a large mural hanging in Nantucket’s Whaling Museum. Born into a family of practicing artists, Lacoursier earned an MFA from Pratt Institute in New York City. Soon after, she launched her early career making floor stencils,

custom painted rugs, glass-related crafts of reverse painting and églomisé, and other traditional American home design and craft techniques. “Early American [decorating] is all about surface decoration,” said Lacoursier in a recent public

lecture about her craft. For much of her work, Lacoursier uses extremely fine-line pens to draw illustrations depicting historic motifs and events, geographical loca-tions or personal milestones among household members. In one family’s Nantucket home, Lacoursier has returned several times to add wedding, birth and other important dates to an otherwise colorful mural over several walls of rolling hills and trees abutting an expansive harbor with ships at sail. “The written word gives you an-other level” to the decor, noted Lacoursier. Paint washes are often

combined with drawings for an antique look. Varnish, ap-plied over the lettering and finely-limned drawings, might give the final work of art the appearance or illusion of being ivory, with the varnish “bringing up” the details on even darker surfaces. Lacoursier especially likes adding “funny, whimsi-cal” touches to make a finished piece especially personal. On a storage cabinet she painted with traditional motifs on its outside, doors open to reveal fanciful renditions of animal mascots for a major league sports team of which the owners are fans. For those who would like to achieve some level of Lacoursier’s skills, she teaches many classes in Nantucket ven-ues. Through this fall, she con-tinues as curriculum coordinator for the 1800s House, the historic

site of Nantucket Historic Association where classes in early American decorative arts are taught, continuing this year through October. Later this fall, Lacoursier joins the staff of Art-

ists Association of Nantucket as that group’s Director of Adult Programs. She also collaborates frequently with other Nantucket decorative artists including painter Chalermkhwan “Kwan” Buadam, whose work is featured in this issue on page 24. A member of the pres-tigious Decorative Arts Society, Lacoursier’s portfolio of work can be seen online at www.mary-emerydesign.com. Over the years Ron would say, ’why don’t we put a wall over there,’ or ‘what do you think about a fence here?’ It’s been an on-going dream project,” he continued. Churns expressed genuine enthusiasm when explaining how he has nurtured this garden with lov-ing care. “I am intimate with every branch on the property,” he said. “We started with a plain palette and slowly transfigured it from a sun garden to one with lots of shade for

year-round enjoyment. [The owners] use the house for a week here and there all year long, and the garden was planned for all seasons. There is a canopy of trees above with walkways throughout. It’s really three separate properties, two of them

taken up with gardens.” Friends often come in through the side door, which opens into the sitting room. It seems friendlier and not quite as imposing as walking into the more formal living room beyond the front door. The patio on this side is a delightfully shaded area where the owners often have lunch or casual dinners with friends on a warm evening. EYE-ARRESTING INTERIORS The layout of the house is not typical of Nantucket Quaker-

influenced houses. There’s a small entry-way with a living room to the right and a stairway from the living room to the upstairs bedrooms. The dining room and tiny kitchen are to the left of the hallway, with the sitting room beyond the dining room. This is where the owners spend most of their time, at the back of the house, with views of the spectacular gar-dens. The rooms have not been changed, and even the tiny kitchen, by today’s standards, would seem inadequate for a modern family. But these owners find it suits their lifestyle quite well. When you walk into this house it’s as though you had entered another century. The house is old, but it doesn’t seem fossilized and is quite alive in spirit. In fact, it is a marvelously fascinating and

a rare opportunity to look into the past. Rooms are filled with artifacts displayed in such a way as to make it difficult for a visitor to leave a room before absorbing everything in it. Each item is an impor-tant part of a collection and has sur-vived for a reason. The owners know the absolute provenance of every one of their collections, and although the house has a museum-like quality, it is quite livable because the furnishings, while seeming to have been here forever, are comfortably up-to-date. The interior design suggests the way the house might have been fur-nished by a well-heeled family 250 years ago. To the current homeowners’ credit, they’ve maintained it respectfully so. NH

A collection of covered lightship basket purses, open baskets, tall knitting baskets, and squat sewing baskets, along with fine examples of scrimshawed whale’s teeth, are arranged on a primitive folk art table set with carved Austrian chairs c. 1840.

All rooms have Liddle’s favored Serena & Lily design accents, beautifully framed island landscapes and seascapes from Becky Zadroga of Nantucket Lens Photogra-phy, impeccable bed and bath linens from Matouk and Frette, and bath products by Malin+Goetz, shipped from Italy. The Centerboard renova-tion project was just the beginning of what has turned into a successful business relationship, with the Benks relying on Liddle to transform their three historic inns. The Centerboard Inn and The Regatta Inn flank each side of Centre Street in Nantucket’s downtown historic district. The third inn is the former Cranberry Inn located on Main Street in Chatham, which the Benks just re-opened this spring with the new name “359 Main.”

THE REGATTA INN Just a year after the Benks had the newly renovated Centerboard Inn up and running, another inn became available directly across the street. The Benks found it difficult to resist, so in 2011 they purchased The Regatta Inn, formerly Centre Street Inn. Compared to their first venture, the federal style building needed more than just a facelift, with new plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling systems re-quired.

Because Paul Benk was impressed by Liddle’s ability to pull the elements together at the Centerboard, he asked her for ideas about their new acquisition. Together, they agreed the Regatta would have a bolder, edgier decor. “At the Regatta we wanted it more like a boutique hotel with custom furniture and modern amenities and all new bathroom fixtures,” recalled Benk.

A soothing island beach scene by Becky Zadroga of Nantucket Lens photograohy highlights this room at The Centerboard Inn. Rustic and elegant materi-als complete the picture with a rough hewn headboard, mercury glass lamps with burlap shades and lovely bed linens.

The subsequent construction created a stripped down structure and allowed a whole new look to take shape, starting with a nearly blank canvas. Benk was impressed by Lid-dle’s ability, in the end, to pull it all together. “Having already done such a great job giving the Centerboard a fresh new look, we were comfortable letting Nina go for it at the Regatta,” said Benk. “I was impressed most by how the bathrooms came together to create a luxurious spa-like feeling.”  The rooms at the Regatta are comfortable, contemporary and surprisingly bright. The furnishings are crisp with pops of color in each room. Unlike what one often expects at a seaside B&B in an historic vil-lage, the inn feels more like a private club setting. A luxuri-ous woven throw softens every room and provides comfort

when lounging. A particularly stunning room has a beautiful patterned slate grey and cream backdrop of a floral wallpaper pattern by local Nantucket muralist and wallpaper designer Audrey Sterk. Crisp white and grey soft elements contrast with striking, modern turquoise-colored lamps that bring everything into focus.  Liddle connected the upstairs and downstairs decor by adding con-temporary square wainscoting with a soft grey finish in the stairways.

That kind of detail makes a big impact. Benk was thrilled with the transformation: “Nina did a great job. We were so pleased with her work that we brought her over to Chatham to renovate 359 Main, our newest inn, which just re-opened this spring.”

Phillip Jeffries orange “Union Square” wallpaper brightens a room at The Regatta Inn with vivid bedside lamps, a soft throw and embellished pillow.

THE DESIGN TEAM Nina Liddle stays up to date on what’s new in the design world by avidly gathering information from Pinterest, Houzz, blogs and other design-related websites, as well as constantly tearing sheets from magazines to add to her inspiration files.  Her design team is a twosome, with assistant Arianne Berg-er helping with everything from design schemes to placing orders and installa-tions. With her background in public relations and a high level of interest in design, Berger seemed to be a natural fit for the firm. In guesthouses, inns and residential homes, Liddle designs for the lifestyle of the client. In most

cases, whether owner occupied or used as a rental property, a Nantucket home has to be durable. Fabric choices are important. These can be high in style while still being beachy, comfortable, pet friendly interiors. “In an historic home or high end new construc-tion, I am often inspired by the architectural details.” Liddle continues to work on new residential projects and says she hopes to take on a classic historic renovation, maybe a residential home in town, mixing the old with the new. That eBay Built In 2009, Sherry Lefevre realized her dream of owning an

antique home on Nantucket. Then she furnished it from eBay.

any of us understand Sherry Lefevre’s excitement and satisfaction in her many “finds” on eBay. As an avid buyer and seller on eBay for more

almost two decades, I’ve had mostly positive experiences on the leading virtual auction site. A couple of years ago, though, I had a brief to-do with eBay and its partner money transaction site Paypal, a story that ended up in the consumer complaints column “The Haggler” in The New York Times. The outcome, I’m proud to say, probably contributed to a change in Paypal policies in favor of us users. You can Google my name and either company to get that full story and its outcome. Author and Nantucket homeowner Sherry Lefevre thank-fully accomplished many produc-tive transactions in the process of furnishing her new Nantucket home from items found on eBay. She vividly recollects those experiences, which she calls “genuinely heartening,” in her book “The Nantucket House that eBay Built.” Lefevre first developed her love for Nantucket and its houses as a child visitor to the island with her family, staying in a rented 19th-century ‘Sconset house. She recalls those years in the 1960s as a time when “ferry workers still spat chewing tobacco...The Old Mill still had a miller and the Sankaty Lighthouse still had lighthouse keepers.” In many ways, those vacations launched Lefevre’s journey to becoming a Nantucket homeowner.

In fact, the history of Nantucket, especially its devel-opment as a resort community, plays a major part in Lefevre’s book. She limns the history of 19th century businessman Wil-liam Underhill and his love for the “indigenous fishing shacks of ‘Sconset,” the passion that led Underhill to write an architec-tural history about those distinctive abodes and to become the lead developer and promoter who helped make the village a

widely known summer retreat by the late 1800s. Lefevre writes: “That vaca-tion should involve a change of lifestyle was Underhill’s key insight and pro-motional pitch. ‘The enjoyments of life are heightened by change,’ he wrote in his typical hybrid of advertising and proselytizing. While a simpli-fied lifestyle might have been the cottages’ greatest allure, the cottages offered an imaginary leap that was an equally essential form of change as far as Underhill was concerned. His cottages made it easy to imag-ine you were living at sea. There were ladders for stairs, peepholes for windows, and floors that had settled into undulations and convex shapes much like ships’ cabins. The bedrooms were merely berths, the closets simply lockers. All of these descriptions were included in his advertising. You had the

advantage of a seaman’s life but without fear of ‘ drifting on land in darkness or in fog, or being driven on a

OLD HOUSE INTERVIEWS The Nantucket Preservation Trust offers the commu-nity an individualized preservation program, “Interviewing your Nantucket House.”Members of the interview team consist of preservationists, contractors and architects who will visit you at your home for a walk-through. We’ll talk about the history of your house, its architectural style, its special features, details and materials. We can offer recommendations about renovation and additional considerations, as well as maintenance concerns.

HOUSE MARKERS The NPT marker recognizes island structures, 50 years old or older that have retained their historic exte-rior appearance. The structures must be well maintained and contribute to the streetscape. The marker, a rectangular wooden plaque with the painted NPT elliptical fan logo, bears the name of the original owner, builder or histori-cal name of the structure and the date of construction. It signifies recogni-tion by the NPT of the structure’s historical significance. The word “marker” derives from the 15th century term “to make your mark“ and distinguishes the sign from the informal quarter boards traditionally used on-island. The NPT marker informs the public about the age of a structure and its association with prominent individuals from the past or present. The presence of a marker also indicates that detailed information about that structure is available in the ar-

chives of the Nantucket Historical Association’s Research Library.

PRESERVATION EASEMENTS A preservation easement, called a preservation restric-tion in Massachusetts, is a legal agreement made between an owner of a historic property and a qualified easement holding organization. The easement protects the architectural integrity of the property by restricting future alterations and uses. Preser-vation easements can protect both the exterior and interior of a qualifying property. Preservation easements are limited to historic structures or sites significant for their architecture, archaeology or asso-ciations in history. In Massachusetts, these include historically

significant buildings, structures, land-scape features, and archaeological sites and their settings listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of His-toric Places. On Nantucket, over 2,400 structures are certified as contributing to the Island’s designation as a National Historic Landmark. These structures can qualify for preservation easements. Each preservation easement is unique and tailored to the building and the needs of the property owner. This flexible tool leaves the owner with full

use of the property, but protects specific historic features forever. Future owners are legally required to obey the restriction. The easement document includes enforcement provisions. Protected features include the building‘s exterior (al-ready regulated by the Historic District Commission) and historic interior features such as structural members, space configura-tions, chimneys, plaster walls, floors, woodwork and stairways.

Each preservation easement is unique and tailored to the

Where appropriate the easement can protect original and historic hardware, decorative finishes and fixtures. The document is usually prepared to exclude modern additions, bathrooms and kitchens. Once the easement is recorded, we’ll meet with you at least once a year to monitor the easement and to answer questions and provide preservation assistance. If you sell the property, monitoring and enforcement of the preservation easement will continue. This process, like the easement will continue in perpetuity.

RESTORING YOUR OLD HOUSE Nantucket’s historic buildings are the defining elements of our community. They provide us with a sense of place and a link to the past. Restoring a historic building can be a challenge. It is often difficult to know where to begin and who to turn to for assistance and advice. Our guidance provides owners of historic Nantucket houses with a starting point. As you plan your project, remember that a historic Nantucket house is a community treasure, with its own history and set of historic elements. No two historic buildings are alike, and the more you preserve and protect, the more authentic, valuable and rewarding your home will be. Consider the big picture. Why undertake a restoration project at this time? For many people, the answer is that new mechanicals or kitchen/baths are desired or the house is a new purchase and updating is necessary. As a steward of an island resource you will need to accomplish your goals while protecting and enhancing your home’s historic elements.

Before you begin the work, learn about your home’s history and architecture. Every house has a story to tell—not just who built it and who owned it over the years, but how the house evolved gradually over time to meet the needs of suc-ceeding owners. Understanding the architectural evolution of the house and its history is key to proper restoration. The Nantucket Preservation Trust can help you learn more with a simple walk-through to point out original historic elements and changes, or with a detailed house history.

STEWARDS OF NANTUCKET’S HERITAGE The Nantucket Preservation Trust’s role as stewards and advocates of the island’s rich architectural heritage is to further preservation education and protection of our historic

resources. Our work includes part-nering with other preservation-minded groups and reaching out to residents, owners of historic properties and visitors. It is our hope that more and more property owners will think of their historic proper-ties as valued art objects—one-of-a-kind treasures that through a mix of luck and love have survived intact to this day. In order to save Nantucket’s historic resources, we all need to value and appreciate not only the exteriors of historic

buildings, but the quirks and flaws in their interiors that make them different and give them character. And we all need to encourage patching, repairing and recycling instead of gutting, replacing and wasting building materials. NH

Understanding the evolution of the house

and its history is key to proper restoration.

lee shore in gales’ he wrote. Another brochure’s copy reads: ‘Inside, little space, big accommodation. Six to nine rooms. Sailors knew how to stow cargo, human livestock or freight.’” Lefevre shares Underhill’s passion for Nantucket’s history and its old houses, especially those whose owners during her early years on the island brayed cheekily about the virtues of their aging Nantucket homes, in songs of one up-manship over whose house was older and more decrepit. Writes Lefevre: “Only the brags were the opposite of what you expected. Because consummate decrepi-tude was the apogee of perfection and holes in the roof, nesting bats, warped floors, leaky plumbing, were all scoring points.” Many observers lament that the charm of owning what’s old on Nantucket has mostly disappeared. Multimillion-dollar Nantucket mansions with pristine exteriors and gleaming, expan-sive interiors increasingly make up the pages about the island in local and national “shelter” magazines. In fact, the old time charm of Nantucket lives on in houses that remain in families for several generations and for those who embrace the comfort and allure of well-worn artifacts and furnish-ings. You’ll find some of that in the pages of this magazine. Lefevre has certainly done her part in her book to keep the allure of old Nantucket alive. You’ll find her personal inspirations, humorous decorating guidelines for an old house and many images of the one-of-a-kind or few-of-a-kind art, photographs, memora-bilia and trappings she found to outfit the antique home she bought on Nantucket in 2009. Her room-by-room advice includes sections on finding the right art frames, dioramas, shell art, chintz, linens, lamps, rugs, chairs, nautical art, ancestral paintings and photos, games, books, taxidermy birds—you name it—including some things she calls “borderline ugly.” She even shares how to conduct a fruitful eBay search based on your personal preferences and desires, all the while keeping in mind the cache’ attached to almost anything with a Nantucket association. You’ll delight in reading about the history of the island from someone who takes such delight in it herself. Contemplative and reflective, full of memories about Nantucket and her effort to build new ones, Lefevre’s book serves as a compendium of Nantucket history, decorating philosophy and practical eBay buying tips. Two especially humorous excerpts in Lefevre’s book serve as checklists for those who want to capture the same authentic worn charm that Lefevre sought in her new antique home on Nantucket. After shipping most of her eBay finds to Nantucket and installing them in her property, Lefevre acknowledged her “virtual barn raising” by naming her new home “All Join In.” It might not reflect your particular dreams or intentions for a new home on Nantucket, but it’s an awfully good read and a guide for those of us who share her passion for funky, quirky and colorful artifacts of home decor. As you can see, for me, Summer means Reading (bookshelves); Games (chess, checkers, backgammon, game table and chairs); Sleeping (white Chenille bedspreads, wool blankets, lots of throws), Eating (heavy, jelly-jar type glasses, over-sized skillets, fish platters, candles), Crafts (making mem-ory objects out of shells and postcards and photographs); while Nantucket means Ships and Sailing (old seascapes, nautical prints, ship dioramas), Whaling (whale oil lamps, whale carv-ings); Shell Crafts (sailors valentines, Victorian shell boxes); Vintage Nantucket souvenirs. The Nantucket items I have bought on eBay were affordable because they were from Kansas, Florida, Maine, New York and Clinton, Massachusetts. Even then, they weren’t exactly cheap. In the last ten or fifteen years, the word has spread as far as Kansas that Nantucket spells money. An eBay seller in Maine, specializing in Victorian souvenirs from all over the Northeast, lists a very lovely “Buy it Now” German, 5 inch antique vase (with gold trim) commemorating Newark, New Jersey at $14.95; while a very plain 3.5 inch creamer (no gold trim) depicting the Martha’s Vineyard-Nantucket steam-ship is $110. Poor Newark vase. All the gold leaf, like all the granite countertops and dental crown molding, can’t overcome the old adage, “location, location, location.” —Sherry Lefevre
