    Suzhou Nanotechnology Overview

About Suzhou The beautiful ancient garden city of Suzhou in China, known as the Venice of the Orient, has been transformed into a high-tech city in the last two decades and it is now known as one of the fastest growing high-tech industrial and innovative cities in China. In the past 5 years, regional and provincial governments have invested substantially, have built world-class infrastructure, and provide attractive incentives for international companies and high-tech entrepreneurs to establish R&D, manufacturing and business in the China-Singapore jointly developed Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP).

Nanopolis Suzhou The Nanotech Commercialization Hub in China

Suzhou has been designated by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) as the China International Nanotech Innovation Cluster (CHInano). SIP launched the Nanopolis Suzhou initiative to provide a complete ecosystem support for the growth of nanotechnology and its enabling industries. The Nanopolis Suzhou will be built with total area of 1 square kilometers, equipped with integrated services for R&D, technology incubation, pilot production, mass production, corporate HQ, conference/exhibition facilities and other auxiliary amenities. Phase I of Nanopolis Suzhou will be ready to house R&D&I centers and companies by the end of 2012.

The industry areas of focus include micro and nano-manufacturing technologies (printed electronics, nano carbon, MEMS technology & devices, nanoimprint lithography, instrument & devices), energy and green technologies (battery technology, photovoltaics technology, lighting, power electronics, gas/water purification, green technologies) and nano medicine (targeted drug delivery, nano devices and instruments for imaging and diagnostics, health and safety). Suzhou intends to attract over 200 nanotech companies from all over the world and 10,000 nanotech experts within the next 5 years to make Suzhou the most global and innovative nanotech hub in China by 2015.

The SIP has committed 10billion RMB (about 1.6BUSD) for the next five years to further develop Suzhou high-tech industries including nanotech enabled industries. Today the SIP is housed with 20000 national and multinational companies including 3M, Samsung, Siemens, Johnson & Johnson, Phillips, AMD, Bosch, Eli Lily and others within 288 square kilometers. Suzhou was ranked top 3 in 2010 China's Most Innovative Cities by Forbes.

    Suzhou Nanotechnology Today

    3

SIP has had strong cooperation with Singapore government, research institutes and industries during the last seventeen years, as well as cooperation in nanotech R&D with Finland through the China-Finland Nanotechnology Strategic Mutual Collaboration Initiative. The Suzhou Ventures Group has a 50-50 joint venture with Israel Infinity Fund to co-invest in China high-tech industries. This fund established the International IP Bank which serves as a platform for bridging the gap between R&D and commercialization and facilitates advanced technology transfer from Israel to SIP. The home grown semiconductor foundry, China WLCSP, is a successful role model for this new high tech business model.

Nanotechnology has been recognized as a key enabler for transforming Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) into a next generation high-tech industry hub (Suzhou Innovation Park) with advanced and high value-added electronics, functional materials, manufacturing, medicine as well as emerging industries such as Printed Electronics, Renewable Energy and Water. During the past 5 years, SIP has attracted over 2700 nanotech related experts, entrepreneurs and engineers, and incubated and supported over 100 nanotech related companies both from China and overseas. In addition, SIP provides attractive R&D and manpower funding and other service incentives to lower the cost for entrepreneurs and companies to establish R&D, commercialization and related service activities.

Today SIP is equipped with world-class R&D infrastructure including the state of art nanotech fabrication, processing and characterization facilities; commercialization platforms (prototyping and manufacturing) for LED, OLED, Printed Electronics, Battery Technology, Targeted Drug Delivery, GaN based Power Devices, and Nano-Carbon Materials and Applications. SIP has also established complete industry value chains for LED, MEMS, Laser etc. Together with Chinese Academy of Sciences and national and regional funding agencies, SIP established one of the most advanced nanotech institutes in the world, the Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech and Nano-bionics (SINANO) with a total of 400 principle investigators and research staff conducting world-class application R&D.

Within a few kilometers radius, there are other academic research institutions including the FUNSOM Center (Soochow University), Suzhou Key Laboratory of Biomedical Materials and Technology (Southeast University), and Advanced Laboratory for Environmental Research and Technology (jointly funded by SIP and University of Science and Technology of China and Hong Kong City University); and a number of vibrant Nanotech start-ups including SVG Optronics, Ubiquitous Computing Nano Technologies, Halation Photonics, OptoTrace and Nano-micron Technology.
