Tata Nano - A Dream Becomes Reality

The man and The Machine

Like all the great human endeavors, it started with a by-now-famous dream.

Watching Indian families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter,his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a littlebaby, Ratan Tata, conceived the People's Car, a safe, affordable, all-weather formof transport for such a family. And the goal was set at Rupees 1 Lakh.

It was an audacious move.

First they said it cant be done.

Ratan Tata & his team marched on.

Then they said it will just be a glorified Auto.

Ratan Tata drove to 9th annual Auto Expo(first time unveiling), on January 10,2008 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, India, a proper car at Rupees 1 lakh.

Damn all the naysayers.If it's good enough for Ratan Tata, it good enough for ustoo.

When a proud Ratan Tata said A promise is a promise, it was a statement, heardacross the globe.

Obstacles were many, Singur fiasco, 26/11 terrorist attack on Taj, the flagshiphotel of Tata Group and THE RECESSION.

(I am sure there many more which we are not aware)

It is said that 'A true knight is fuller of bravery in the midst, than in thebeginning of danger.'

For the way Ratan Tata handled all the above & more, we just agree.

And finally today as it hits the road...Tata Nano, a 4 wheeled people moverwhich's so much more when viewed in totality, that it is bound to move manysouls.

This is a moment to forget the recession, problems, and everyday chores of life,salute Ratan Tata and his team, and then soak in the applause as world sits up,takes notice and says WOW.

With all due credits to all those ppl involved in the design and productionof this car.

All that they done so far is build the car.

That's just the same as bringing the cash to the casino.

What happens after is what matters?

Who/what is the target market?

How many do they plan to sell in a year?

How do they define success??

If they have really got it right and if it can perform the same numbers itclaims on the brochures, the max I can see is this becoming the most

popular 'TAXI' in india and replace "Tata indica" from that spot. But I

dont see that happening too, given the power of the engine and

performance.

So the best this can be is a 'City taxi'. The best case scenario for NANO will

be to eat into the market share of Maruti 800 and it will have to go a long

long way to do that.

Regarding selling this in European or American market with the current

spec less said the better.

So before you sit and let out your WOW relax and sit back and wait for the

numbers to flow.

Tata Motors is in a lot od soup at present before they count their first

penny of profit.

Yeah Ravi, valid points.

Yes Tata Motors is in lot of soup for different reasons, apart from Singur

fiasco.

And Nano will eat into Auto Rickshaw, Maruti 800 & used car market and

only some percentage of the buyers will be the intended families travelling

on 2 wheelers (its this part that gives a nice edge to marketing though).

Instead of crunching numbers here, its safe to say they will take years to

just break even.

But whats commendable is that, they have built a proper car (from first

impressions though I have quality apprehensions) at that cost.

Wows just for that.

Domestic passenger car sales have recorded 33.88 per centincrease at 1,32,615 units in October from 99,052 units in the samemonth last year.

According to the figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile

Manufacturers (SIAM) today, motorcycle sales in the country during the

month was also up 14.22 per cent at 6,11,828 units from 5,35,642 units

in the corresponding month last year.

The total two-wheeler sales in October grew by 10.61 per cent to 7,50,229 units compared to 6,78,245 units

in the same period in 2008.

Sale of commercial vehicles was up for the fourth consecutive month, rising by a healthy 51.90 per cent in

October to 42,562 units from 28,019 units in the year-ago period, SIAM said.

The total sales of vehicles across all categories increased by 15.62 per cent to 10,00,760 units in October,

against 8,65,566 units in the same month last year, it added.
