Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you to our families for joining us yesterday and Wednesday evening to
celebrate the many performances of song and dance from our Kindergarten
and Grade 1-3 students at Rolph’s first music concerts of the year. Your
overwhelming support on nights like this mean so much! It was wonderful to
come together just before the break and celebrate the talents of our children.
A big thank you to Mr. Bailey, our music teacher, for instilling this love of music
and dance with his students on a daily basis and for helping coordinate these
two big events. I know that behind every class performance also stood the
teachers and early childhood educators, who collectively make all the difference
to our students, their learning, creative expression, and experiences in the Arts.
I would like to acknowledge Mr. Bryson and Mr. Bruce Burka, parent volunteer,
who facilitated the transportation to and from our school for the risers needed at
Leaside auditorium. Thank you so very much! We have captured some
highlights on the pages that follow, although something tells me you are not
short of footage or photos. Congratulations to all our young performers!
Keep singing, dancing and shining bright!
What makes me so proud as Principal of this school is the engagement of staff
and students in a week that, for most other buildings, would have been winding
down. Member of Parliament, Mr. Rob Oliphant visited with our Grade 5/6
classes to bring their study of government to life on Monday. In addition, our
entire junior division immersed themselves en francais at the Cine Franco film
festival on Tuesday. There were many teachable moments yesterday as
classes honoured and discussed International Women’s Day. We have
highlighted these and more in the pages that follow. Please take time to read
these as we make every effort to ensure they provide parents/guardians with
another window into our school and showcase the happenings at Rolph.
Another birth announcement that came late last Friday…Congratulations to
Mr. Whitaker on the arrival of daughter Charlotte Jane. We are so happy for
him!
Lastly, wishing you and your families a wonderful March Break! Much relaxa-
tion, fun and time to connect with family and friends. We will see you back on
Monday, March 19th.

Thursday March 8th was International Women’s Day
It is a day which honours women and promotes women’s rights.
International Women’s Day dates back to 1911 when many
women were fighting for the right to vote.
The United Nations began sponsoring the day in 1975
People around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. In some places,
women receive flowers or other gifts. Groups in many countries arrange talks,
performances, and other activities.
Each year the UN help to organize events related to a specific women’s rights issue—
for example, improving education or ending violence against women.
Some countries, such as Cuba, China, Eritrea, Russia and Uganda have made it a
public holiday. South Africa celebrates its own public holiday, National Women’s
Day, on August 9 every year.
In Canada, our theme for International Women’s Day is : Women’s Empowerment
Lead to Equality.
Empowerment, which means the power to do or change something, is essential in
gender equality!
Rob Oliphant at Rolph
On Monday, Mr. Jonsohn and Ms. Macapagal’s class had the privilege to have an open discussion with Don Valley Federal MP Rob Oliphant. Mr. Oliphant was kind enough to come to Rolph Road and give the 5’s and 6’s a presentation about the Canadian Government. He talked about many different aspects about our government. For example, his position in the government, the different levels of government and other people in the government.
Near the end of Mr. Oliphant’s presentation, we were allowed to ask him some questions that we had previously prepared for him for our Social Studies projects. Those questions were well thought out by the students! The questions were also based on some of the topics on their Social Studies projects. Some of the questions were about his job, his impact on the country since he was elected and more. We even threw a hardball about Canada’s deal to sell Saudi Arabia new armoured vehicles in exchange for 12 billion dollars. Although some of our questions were difficult, he answered them well and we learned a lot from him. He explained that we were his bosses and it was his job to take our ideas back to Ottawa.
It is not everyday that you get to meet a member of parliament. We were very grateful that we got to spend time with him. Who knows, maybe he inspired a future politician! Mr. Oliphant told us to be active in the government in some sort of way, no matter what party. Thank you Mr. Oliphant!
