    Unconditional Maternity Benefit and Removal of Two-child norm

    NAMHHR joined forces with Right to Food Campaign and The Coalition against Two ChilNorm & Coercive Population Policies (2CN-C) to take forward the issue of two child norm

    which adversely affected women from the marginalised community and had collectsignatures against this from 30 eminent individuals and organizations.NAMHHR and allies shared this in a meeting with the Secretary of the Ministry of Healand Family Welfare (MoHFW) on April 16. This had a positive impact and the MoHFWissued a GO for removal of the two child norm conditionality from all its schemes weffect from May 8 2013 Government Order (No. Z.14018/1/2012 JSY)NAMHHR s convener was invited to share the key findings of the study on IGMSY schemein a consultative meeting on Maternity Benefit organized by the National Mission forEmpowerment of Women (on behalf of the Ministry of Women and Child Developmentand Ministry of Labour and Employment) on July 2. (Read more athttp://namhhr.blogspot.in/2013/04/advocating-with-chairperson-of-ncpcr-on.html ) NAMHHR and the 2CN-C coalition issued a joint statement to the media with referento the National Food Security Bill calling for government to remove the draconian two-chinorm which was still being linked to the maternity benefits within National Food SecuriBill. The issue received favourable media coverage with over seven online media picking itapart from an article in Hindu.

    Maternal Mortality and Morbidity A Human Rights Issue

    NAMHHR in collaboration withCommonhealth, SAMA, CEHAT,SAHAJ and SOCHARA, organised atwo-day National Consultation onMaternal Health on August 12-13 inNew Delhi. Dr. Syeda Hameed,Member,Planning Commission andShri Keshav Desiraju, Secretary MoHFW attended the event.Read more at

    NAMHHR convener was invited by World Health Organization on July 10 as a resourcperson for Maternal Health and Human Rights in the WHO-SEARO Workshop on Mainstreaming Gender, Equity and Human Rights where the Barwani case study wpresented.

    Alliance Building Efforts

    A press conference was organized by

    the Coalition against Two Child Norm& Coercive Population Policies(2CN-C ) and NAMHHR on July 10on coercive population policies and

    schemes, and its impact on the poorestof the poor. The media dialoguebrought together a panel of health and human rights advocates andsenior media persons.     unconditional maternity benefit for women in the unorganized sector.NAMHHR members attended and disseminated the policy brief on unconditionalmaternity entitlements to a diverse audience during a national conference on Womens Social Security and Rights in India organized by PWESCR on 6-7 May, collaboration with UN-women, Heinrich Bll Foundation, ILO and UNSW.Responding to a call by Platform for Domestic Workers , NAMHHR Secretariparticipated in the demonstrations organised by them on July 31.     August 3-4 and presented a paper on Caste, Religion and Discrimination by the Public HSystem .NAMHHR members attended a National Consultative meeting on Protection of the Rights and Dignity of Sex Workers (August 21 -22) organized by the All Ind

    Network of Sex Workers (AINSW). This resulted in two NAMHHR SC members beininvited to be members of the core committee of AINSW NAMHHR convenor was invited by WGHR as a panellist to speak during the launch

    of the UPR-2 monitoring tool on August 22.

    Campaign

    An Adivasi woman in Sukhpuri

    village was denied admission tothe Menimata PHC and wasforced to deliver in full public

    view outside a governmenthospital. MadhuriKrishnaswamy from theorganisation JADS who is also aNAMHHR member, helped the

    woman immediately and JADSprotested the denial of care.

    In response, NAMHHR members wrote to MOHFW andcirculated an online petition

    which was also shared at the Women Deliver Conference heldin May 2013 at Kaula Lumpur togarner support and protestagainst her arrest.

    Engagement with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)

    NAMHHR has been engaging with the National Human Rights Commission on the UPR 2 follow-up processRecommendations have been submitted to NHRC on maternal health, women s SRHR and health; these will be used developing indicators to monitor Indias implem entation of the UPR 2 recommendations that were received by the governmenin May 2012. The convener of NAMHHR has contributed to the NHRC journal an article titled Maternal Health: Protection and Promot

    Human Rights of Women .
