SSET Bags Second Prize at National Solar Vehicle Challenge 2017-18. Helios, a team of twelve final year mechanical engineering students overcome all the odds and win the national solar vehicle challenge organized by Dynamist Motorsports at Merchant University, Mehsana, Gujarat during 20-23 March 2018. The vehicle was named SEV (SSET’s Electric Vehicle) and was designed and fabricated by the students under the mentorship of faculty from the Departments of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. This three wheeled vehicle weighs 300 kg operated by a 2 kW BLDC motor and 48 V lead-acid batteries. It makes use of mechanical disc braking, Ackerman steering mechanism, spring suspension and chain and sprocket transmission. The source of input energy is solar. The design also houses a socket to be plugged into the grid when solar power is not adequately available. The vehicle’s cruising speed is 45 kmph with a range of 1 hr for 95% battery discharge. It is also aerodynamically efficient with a drag coefficient of 0.75. The cost of the vehicle is Rs. 1.2 lakhs. Design and fabrication were carried out strictly adhering to the NSVC rule book. There were about 45 teams from all over the country of which 24 qualified for the dynamic test. Team Helios came out with flying colours in the brake, acceleration, design calculations, solar powering and endurance tests and bagged the second prize. They won a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 35,000. A recognition at the national level is really encouraging for all of us at SSET as a solar vehicle was built for the first time in the history of SCMS. It indeed made us believe in our capacity to Engineer. Faculty Mentors 1. Dr. Sheeja Janardhanan, Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engg. 2. SSET Bags Second Prize at National Solar Vehicle Challenge 2017-18.

Helios, a team of twelve final year mechanical engineering students overcome all the odds and

win the national solar vehicle challenge organized by Dynamist Motorsports at Merchant

University, Mehsana, Gujarat during 20-23 March 2018.

The vehicle was named SEV (SSET’s Electric Vehicle) and was designed and fabricated by the

students under the mentorship of faculty from the Departments of Mechanical and Electrical

Engineering. This three wheeled vehicle weighs 300 kg operated by a 2 kW BLDC motor and 48 V

lead-acid batteries. It makes use of mechanical disc braking, Ackerman steering mechanism,

spring suspension and chain and sprocket transmission. The source of input energy is solar. The

design also houses a socket to be plugged into the grid when solar power is not adequately

available. The vehicle’s cruising speed is 45 kmph with a range of 1 hr for 95% battery discharge.

It is also aerodynamically efficient with a drag coefficient of 0.75. The cost of the vehicle is Rs. 1.2

lakhs. Design and fabrication were carried out strictly adhering to the NSVC rule book.

There were about 45 teams from all over the country of which 24 qualified for the dynamic test.

Team Helios came out with flying colours in the brake, acceleration, design calculations, solar

powering and endurance tests and bagged the second prize. They won a trophy and a cash prize

of Rs. 35,000. A recognition at the national level is really encouraging for all of us at SSET as a

solar vehicle was built for the first time in the history of SCMS. It indeed made us believe in our

capacity to Engineer.

TEAM SSET PARTICIPATED AT ASME HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE CONTEST

The ASME Human Powered Vehicle Contest — Asia Pacific is an international event which

is conducted every year, where participants from the sub-continent compete to exhibit their

innovation talents. ASME E-Fests is an arena for the engineering students to gain a stronger

foothold on their professional options and guide them to choose a suitable career path;

showcase their innovation skills; and build an international network of fellow students and

industry thought leaders.

This year the fest was organized by Delhi Technological University at Delhi from 16/03/2018

to 19/03/2018 at Delhi. After the preliminary design contest forty vehicle designs were

shortlisted from all over India, out of which three of the selected designs were from SCMS

School of Engineering and Technology.

The human powered vehicles were designed and fabricated by the students under the

guidance of the staff and experts from the industry. The students gained knowledge in

different design and drafting software, selection of materials, and skills in fabrication. Each

time comprised of nearly 18 members including lady student drivers.

In addition to the HPVC Competitions the students also participated in poster competitions,

student design challenge (completion involving design of robots) and technical presentations.

A total of 54 students and 4 faculties participated in the fest. The accompanying faculty

members are:

1. Dr.Sheeja Janardhanan

2. Jose Sheril D’cotha

3. Paul J Alengadan
